"No! This is unacceptable!"
In the center of the Great Hall, Abin Sur shouted his refusal.
Towering stone pillars lined the hall. Atop each sat a red-robed alien.
They were the Guardians of the Universe-the elders of the Green Lantern Corps. Every major decision passed through them. Their elevated seats allowed them to look down on Abin Sur and Sinestro, a silent display of authority.
"Why, Abin Sur?" Sinestro asked, frustration evident.
"Why do you oppose me? The Guardians have lost faith in our strength. Let us prove them wrong."
"Just give me a squad of our finest Lanterns!"
"You don't understand," Abin Sur said.
"Parallax is-"
"Abin Sur!" a Guardian barked, cutting him off.
He turned to Sinestro.
"Your request is granted."
"Thank you, Guardians." Sinestro bowed slightly.
Then he turned back.
"Abin Sur, you are the greatest Lantern in history. To see you turn coward after a single defeat... it's pathetic."
"And you truly intend to leave your ring with that primitive Earthling?"
"I made a promise," Abin Sur replied calmly.
"I was dying. The ring chose him."
"I have a new ring now. And do not call humans primitive."
"It was an Earthling sorcerer who saved my life."
"I'll believe in their strength," Sinestro said coldly,
"when they prove it to my face."
With that, he turned and left.
"Abin Sur..." a Guardian began.
"Why?" Abin Sur looked up.
"You know that when we sealed Parallax billions of years ago, it was nowhere near this powerful."
"It was newly born. It hadn't consumed much life."
"Now it has devoured entire star systems. Civilizations."
"When I faced it, I was powerless."
"We require data," the Guardian replied calmly.
"To assess the severity."
"Until a final decision is made, the true origin of Parallax must remain classified."
"...Understood."
Abin Sur's eyes widened, but he lowered his head.
He turned and flew away.
As he departed, Sinestro's words echoed in his mind.
Prove it to my face.
Abin Sur's eyes lit up.
"What?"
Morin frowned.
"You want me to go to Oa?"
"Yes," Abin Sur said.
"Sinestro plans to lead dozens of elite Lanterns against Parallax."
"When I sealed it billions of years ago, it was still weak. Now, it has consumed entire star systems."
"I was completely powerless."
"So," Morin asked,
"what exactly do you want me to do there?"
"You are the most powerful individual I have ever seen," Abin Sur said carefully.
"Second only to Parallax itself."
"I want you to demonstrate your strength on Oa."
"It will make it easier for me to stop this madness."
"Ah." Morin nodded.
"So you want me to go slap some sense into them."
"Why not tell them yourself? You have their respect."
"Because of that respect," Abin Sur admitted with a bitter smile.
"My defeat has already planted fear."
"If I say we cannot win, that fear will grow."
"Parallax feeds on fear."
"That's why I'm asking you."
"Well," Morin grinned,
"I've always enjoyed humbling egos."
"I'm in."
"I'll come immediately," Abin Sur said.
"Done." Morin hung up.
How Abin Sur managed to call from Oa didn't matter.
High-tech was high-tech.
"Oa?" Diana asked.
"We've traveled Earth for years," Morin said.
"We've seen everything. Eaten everything."
"Interested in outer space?"
"And as a bonus, we get to humble some arrogant jerks."
"Arrogant jerks?" Diana raised an eyebrow.
"Did you 'foresee' something again?"
"Just a few glimpses," Morin replied.
"And from what I know, these 'advanced' civilizations love looking down on humans."
"I think it's time someone corrected that."
As a human, he had to represent.
And if he beat them, maybe he could trick them into signing gym memberships.
Two birds. One stone.
"In that case," Diana said,
"I see no reason not to go."
"Then it's settled."
Before leaving, Morin secured the rear.
He found Bruce and Clark, explained the Parallax situation, and told them to stay on high alert. If anything happened, they were to contact him immediately.
Then he boarded his Police Universal Vehicle.
In spaceship form, it had warp capability and the Extreme Speed trait.
Even Abin Sur had trouble keeping up.
After several jumps, they arrived.
A massive planet radiating six green beams of light.
Oa.
"The gravity is much stronger than Earth's," Diana noted as they landed.
"More mass," Morin said.
"This planet is at least ten times Earth's size."
"Your physiques..." Abin Sur returned from security, surprised.
"You're completely unaffected."
"Earlier, Hal Jordan passed out from the pressure. He's being treated and enhanced."
"Oh," Morin said casually.
"I'm a sorcerer. I make sure to hit the gym."
"Where's Hal? Done yet?"
"Gym... I'll have to try that," Abin Sur muttered.
"He should be finishing up. Sinestro's rally won't start for a while."
"Lead the way."
Morin used electromagnetic force to carry Diana as they flew.
It avoided unnecessary awkwardness.
"Ugh..."
Hal woke up.
Green.
Very green.
A skin-tight, bright green suit clung to his body. No hood, thankfully. Just a mask over his eyes that felt like a sleep mask.
To Morin, it was a fashion disaster.
To Hal?
He looked shredded.
The massive Lantern logo screamed superhero.
"When I get back," Hal thought,
"I'm getting drinks with Batman and Superman."
He admired himself in the mirror, striking poses.
Then he noticed someone else nearby.
"Done admiring yourself?" a fish-faced alien asked.
Hal froze and dropped the pose.
"Good," the alien said.
"Your ring's translation function is active. Your body has been modified to handle Oa's gravity."
"The mask will manifest when you need it. On Oa, it's unnecessary."
"A talking fish?" Hal blurted.
"I am Xudarian," the alien replied patiently.
"Tomar-Re. Protector of Sector 2813."
"My sector includes-"
"80,012 star systems and 2.34 million species," Hal said instinctively.
He blinked.
"Wait... how did I know that?"
"Ring sync," Tomar-Re replied.
"You can access its database as needed."
"We were curious. This process is rarely this smooth for a primitive species."
"Hey!" Abin Sur called out as he arrived.
"Don't say that."
Tomar-Re blinked, then bowed.
"Great Abin Sur. If you refer to my comment..."
"Is it not factual?"
"And these two are...?"
"They are my friends from Earth," Abin Sur said firmly.
"They saved my life."
"Without them, I wouldn't be here."
"And stop using that term. Our database is flawed."
Earth's gods were recorded.
Lantern cooperation against Darkseid was recorded.
But modern humans were labeled weak.
Primitive.
Then Morin stepped forward.
Abin Sur wanted Sinestro humbled.
Not everyone.
Not yet.
"...Understood," Tomar-Re said.
"Morin?" Hal said, relieved.
"What are you doing here? Becoming Lanterns too?"
"No," Morin replied honestly.
"Not interested."
Diana had been curious.
Morin had explained the hidden meaning of wearing green.
She lost interest quickly.
"I hear mockery," Tomar-Re frowned.
"You do not respect the Corps?"
Morin glanced at Abin Sur.
Abin Sur gave a subtle nod.
"You labeled humans primitive," Morin said lightly.
"If you look down on us, it's fair I look down on you."
"Classification isn't insult," Tomar-Re argued.
"It's based on civilization and potential."
"Your contempt is an insult to everything we stand for."
"Civilization. Potential."
Morin raised two fingers.
"It all comes down to one word."
"Strength."
"Are you challenging me?" Tomar-Re snapped.
"No," Morin shook his head.
"You misunderstand."
"I heard there's a full assembly later."
"How about we go there..."
"And I challenge all of you at once?"
Abin Sur: "!!!"
Brother.
That's too much.
I asked you to teach Sinestro a lesson-
Not slap the entire Corps.
