Chapter 159 - Chapter 13: A Man's Romance With Steel

New book

Food Wars: Not about Food

The meal was, of course, in the cafeteria.

And naturally, the "socially gifted" Fang Xing showed up again.

"You didn't wait for me, Song Shu. I'm hurt!"

Song Shu: "..."

Could you just say, our friendship is over?

I'd agree immediately.

"What are you doing?" Fang Xing recoiled warily. "Did you think I was about to say our friendship is over?"

"Our friendship is solid as a rock. Something like this couldn't affect it!"

Song Shu: "..."

Is a rock even as hard as a mech's outer armor?

"Wait." Fang Xing paused. "Rocks aren't that hard. Our friendship is as hard as a mech's outer shell!"

"Interesting," Morin said, looking at Fang Xing, then at Song Shu.

"Oh? Mr. Poker Face finally speaks?" Fang Xing looked surprised.

"Stop talking nonsense," Song Shu said quickly, trying to cover Fang Xing's mouth before he said something worse.

Only someone with his tolerance could endure Fang Xing's nonstop chatter.

"It's fine," Morin said, wiping his mouth with a napkin.

He looked at Fang Xing.

"Are you two planning to be partners?"

"Hey, you noticed?" Fang Xing finally broke free, eyes lighting up. "The moment I saw Song Shu, I felt chemistry! No one's ever made me feel this way!"

"We're a match made in heaven!"

"That's not how idioms work," Song Shu snapped, already irritated.

Morin looked at him again.

"What do you think?"

"He says that to everyone," Song Shu replied, shaking his head.

"It's different!" Fang Xing protested. "You're especially different!"

"Yes," Song Shu said flatly. "That's also what he says every time."

"Interesting..." Morin murmured.

Mech pilots usually came in pairs.

Of course, Morin himself didn't need one.

With his [Intelligence] exceeding the human limit by more than thirty times, the real issue wasn't compatibility-it was whether anyone else could even withstand his thoughts and memories.

And even if someone could, Morin had no intention of letting anyone see them.

That was his deepest secret.

Besides, he didn't need a partner.

Mech pilots required two people.

Mech designers only needed one.

There was nothing wrong with that.

As a mech designer, he could operate a mech alone.

With Morin's neural strength, handling the neural load of a giant mech-even achieving perfect performance-was well within reach.

That was assuming the neural connection system was mature.

Right now, it wasn't.

That was why single-pilot operation was so difficult.

In theory, once neural technology matured and AI assistance was perfected, even an ordinary person could pilot a mech without suffering neural damage.

But theory was theory.

Reality involved manufacturing limitations, material science, and countless unresolved technical problems.

You couldn't cook without ingredients.

Morin had the design knowledge, but not the foundational materials or industrial capability.

That was the hardest part.

And the most time-consuming.

So for now-and the foreseeable future-he could only design two-pilot mechs, or single-pilot units for himself.

He had already promised to design a custom mech for Song Shu.

And since Song Shu didn't possess Morin's neural strength, solo operation was impossible.

He needed a partner.

Morin had been observing Fang Xing.

At first, he suspected inside information.

Then, after reading Fang Xing's memories and thoughts-

He confirmed it.

Fang Xing was just genuinely naive.

Naive in action, not intent.

Morin didn't dislike that.

Kind-hearted.

A bit too direct.

Too talkative.

Too curious.

Asked too many questions.

Ahem.

More importantly-

Fang Xing's thought patterns were highly synchronized with Song Shu's.

That was interesting.

Perfect neural synchronization was essentially telepathy.

A glance conveyed everything.

Sometimes, even a glance wasn't needed.

Without a neural system, that level was impossible.

Which brought Morin to the Pontus neural bridge.

A true black-tech system.

Not only could it synchronize multiple people during use-

Its real terror came afterward.

It could establish a near-permanent mental connection.

Between people.

Or between human and mech.

The more it was used, the deeper the connection became.

In the original records, Dr. Newton lost himself after repeatedly linking with a Kaiju brain.

There were also reports-

While a pilot slept, their mech displayed electrical responses corresponding to the pilot's dreams.

No cockpit.

No remote control.

Unproven.

Rare.

Almost a legend.

After receiving [Mech Designer's Knowledge], Morin finally understood.

This wasn't superstition.

It was mental strength.

Between humans, the difference was manageable.

Between a human and a mech?

The disparity was massive.

Only under extreme conditions could a weak link form.

That was the source of the "legend."

Morin believed he could reach that level someday.

After upgrades.

After a mech existed.

For now, that desire needed to stay hidden.

Not because he feared opposition-

But because he could already imagine Qin Guang's lectures.

Just thinking about it was exhausting.

So he set it aside.

In short-

Fang Xing seemed like a good partner for Song Shu.

"Do you want to pilot a mech?" Morin asked.

"Me?" Fang Xing pointed at himself.

"Yes."

"Of course!" Fang Xing said loudly. "Mechs are a man's romance!"

"What man doesn't like mechs and want to pilot one?"

"Alright," Morin said.

"Then you can try partnering with Song Shu."

Song Shu: "!!!"

"We already are!" Fang Xing laughed.

"We are not," Song Shu thought, staring at Morin.

"You'll need a partner eventually," Morin said seriously. "And his thoughts are compatible with yours. It's worth trying."

"...Okay," Song Shu nodded.

He was here because of Morin.

His future as a mech pilot depended on Morin.

Since Morin had decided, he agreed.

Morin wouldn't suggest this without reason.

Song Shu looked at Fang Xing.

Direct.

Talkative.

Curious.

Endlessly questioning.

What advantages?

His bright future suddenly felt darker.

"I feel like you're thinking something bad," Fang Xing said, narrowing his eyes.

With those bright eyes, the expression looked strangely profound.

Like a husky plotting something important.

"No," Song Shu said. "I'm not."

"You're lying. I guessed it."

"You guessed wrong."

"How could I be wrong?"

"We haven't even synced yet."

"That's because we're born to be partners!"

...

Watching the two argue back and forth, neither giving ground, Morin nodded.

Two naive idiots.

A perfect match.

Meanwhile, in Zhao Wei's office-

"He... he... he finished it?" Zhao Wei repeated, stunned.

"Yes," Qin Guang replied calmly. "All designers have reviewed the model. No issues so far."

"They estimate three to five days for full verification."

"It uses multiple upgraded technologies. Lower cost. Higher efficiency. Greater load capacity."

"So the mech he finished in one day has no bugs," Zhao Wei muttered, "and introduces new tech?"

"Is he even human?"

"I don't think so," Qin Guang said seriously. "I'd believe he's an alien."

...

Silence fell.

"An... a... alien?" Zhao Wei repeated slowly.

He frowned.

Then relaxed.

"Alien or not," he said, "he hasn't done anything harmful."

"Everything he's done benefits us."

"And all he asks for is money."

"Monitor the mech model closely. Report everything."

"Yes!"

"And have finance prepare one hundred million."
