New book
Food Wars: Not about Food
Ever since Qin Guang became aware of Morin, the so-called "impossible" things he believed in had been shattered again and again.
And each time, it was more outrageous than the last.
Because of this, Qin Guang had even been forced to create a new concept for himself.
A special "ceiling of adaptability."
A ceiling for things that were "totally normal for Morin to be able to do."
Yet the fate of this exclusive ceiling-one born solely for Morin-was simple.
It was meant to be broken.
Repeatedly.
Just like his neighbor, Shen Yu, the so-called "Demon-Slaying Blade Brother," who had been born to rust, break, and eventually turn to dust.
Because of this, Qin Guang could no longer think, Oh, Morin did it. That makes sense.
Instead, Morin shocked him every single time.
Take today, for example.
A full day-
No.
To be precise, half a day.
Morin spent half a day completing a full mech design.
Was that even something a human could do?
Worse still, Morin had casually mentioned that he didn't like how the holographic projection system handled logical computation and modeling, so he had taken some time to modify it.
Which meant...
It actually took him less than half a day.
Just assembling existing mech parts one by one with a holographic projection would take longer than that.
This...
Even though Qin Guang's tolerance had improved significantly, he still couldn't immediately convince himself that this was "normal for Morin."
"I've submitted the mech model to the system," Morin said calmly. "The follow-up review process will need to be arranged by you, Secretary Qin."
Morin preferred to let actions speak.
Why say more when the results were already there?
Qin Guang immediately went to arrange the review.
This was no small matter.
"As for what to do next..." Morin thought for a moment.
It seemed like there was nothing urgent left.
Now, he just needed to wait for the mech model to pass review, wait for his salary, and then-after leveling up-begin his card-drawing journey.
Before upgrading, Morin had no interest in designing another mech.
A beginner-level design would never compare to one created at a higher level.
Since he was about to upgrade anyway, doing it now would just waste time and energy.
If you were going to do something, you should do it properly.
Morin found a staff member, asked for directions to the mech pilot department, and strolled over at an unhurried pace.
Qin Guang had just given him his ID card.
Its authority level was high enough to grant access to most areas.
Song Shu was over there.
A man who practically screamed "protagonist template."
It was a rare chance to play the role of a "golden-finger old man."
Since Morin had nothing better to do, he decided to go take a look.
...
"Huff... huff..."
Inside the training hall, heavy breathing mixed with rhythmic footfalls.
A few strange shouts followed.
"Complete!"
"Complete!"
A series of voices echoed as a group of men in training suits stopped running.
They were preparatory students from the mech pilot department.
This was their final training item for the day.
A five-kilometer run.
"Nice job, Old Song!" someone called out.
"You kept up!"
"It was nothing," Song Shu replied with a gentle smile.
A voice beside him spoke up.
"I've gotta ask-why do you always hold back?"
"Morin?" Song Shu turned, surprised. "Why are you here?"
"I had nothing to do," Morin said with a smile. "Just wandering around."
"You're done with training, right? Anything else scheduled?"
"No," Song Shu shook his head. "That's it for today."
"And you are...?" the student who had spoken earlier asked.
"I'm a mech designer," Morin replied. "Song Shu and I came together. We've known each other for a while."
"Old Song, go take a shower. We can grab a meal afterward."
"Okay," Song Shu nodded.
He didn't object to Morin naturally taking the lead.
"A mech designer?" the student exclaimed.
"I'll wander around a bit more," Morin said, nodding to Song Shu before walking off.
He truly wandered.
It might have been a little impolite.
But it was necessary to maintain his persona.
"This..." the student felt awkward when Morin completely ignored him.
"Don't mind him," Song Shu said with a smile. "He's a bit of a loner."
"I'm going to shower."
"What was that about?" the student scratched his head and followed him.
"Is he really a mech designer? Shouldn't someone his age be an apprentice at best? You knew him before? When did he get here? And what did he mean by holding back? Is that not your real strength...?"
Song Shu's smile stiffened.
This student-Fang Xing-had been strangely enthusiastic ever since arriving yesterday.
Song Shu's personality made it hard for him to brush people off, so he patiently responded.
Which only made Fang Xing more enthusiastic.
He even claimed that he and Song Shu had a special bond.
He was already planning to move into the dorm next door.
His reasoning?
He felt their chemistry was amazing, and that they might achieve perfect neural synchronization in the future.
Song Shu thought, I'll believe that when pigs fly.
If he hadn't asked around and learned that Fang Xing was just naturally friendly, he might have suspected some kind of strange fetish.
Naturally friendly.
And endlessly curious.
Appropriate questions.
Inappropriate questions.
All of them.
Song Shu knew there was no ill intent.
But he still wasn't used to it.
After showering, Song Shu returned to the training hall.
Morin was still wandering nearby.
But now, there was someone standing beside him.
Hands clasped behind his back.
Song Shu recognized him immediately.
The head instructor.
The man responsible for their training.
They seemed to be talking.
This was bad.
Song Shu's heart skipped a beat.
The instructor was infamous.
Strict during training.
Strict outside of training.
A man who never smiled.
Almost all students were afraid of him.
Song Shu included.
Morin wasn't even a pilot trainee.
Had the instructor targeted him?
Song Shu hurried over.
As he got closer, he finally heard their conversation.
They weren't arguing.
"Are you sure?" the instructor asked.
"Of course," Morin replied calmly. "This isn't his real level."
"You can raise the difficulty later."
"...Ah. Here he comes."
Song Shu froze.
They were talking about him?
Raise the difficulty?
"Song Shu, right?" the instructor turned and asked.
Song Shu noticed something terrifying.
The instructor was smiling.
Barely.
But it was there.
"Yes, Instructor!" Song Shu snapped to attention.
"This isn't training," the instructor said after a brief pause. "You don't need to be that stiff."
"The strictness is just to build discipline."
"Think about it. You'll be piloting a mech someday. If you can't follow orders..."
"The consequences would be severe."
"I understand!" Song Shu replied, eyes wide.
He looked at the instructor.
Then at Morin.
The principle wasn't new.
But this explanation was.
The instructor wasn't the type to explain things.
In Song Shu's mind, there was only one reason.
Morin.
"Alright," Morin said with a smile. "We're going to eat now. Instructor Sun, would you like to join us?"
"No," Instructor Sun replied, shaking his head. "I still have things to arrange."
"Alright," Morin nodded. "Then we'll be going."
"And Instructor Sun."
"Remember what I said."
"Raise the difficulty for Song Shu."
"Understood," Instructor Sun said seriously.
Song Shu's inner thoughts screamed.
Hey-hey-can you say that in front of me?!
On the surface, he said nothing.
One was Morin, someone he owed.
The other was the head instructor.
He couldn't afford to offend either.
"Goodbye, Instructor," Song Shu said politely before leaving with Morin.
Instructor Sun stood there until they disappeared around the corner.
Only then did he lower his hands.
Slowly, he pulled out his phone.
His fingers trembled.
For a man who could serve as head instructor, this was unheard of.
"Hello?" he said. "Qin Guang?"
"Yes."
"That Morin," Instructor Sun said. "Are you sure he's a mech designer?"
"Yes," Qin Guang replied. "From your tone... your test didn't go well?"
"Yes," Instructor Sun's mouth twitched.
"I exchanged a few moves with him."
"...Why did you fight him? I only asked you to test his physical fitness!" Qin Guang panicked.
That was a treasure.
What if it broke?
"I'd like to ask you that," Instructor Sun snapped. "Where did you find this monster?"
"It's a good thing he held back."
"Otherwise, I'd be on sick leave."
"...Huh?" Qin Guang was completely stunned.
...
"I watched your training," Morin said as they walked.
"You held back a lot."
Song Shu hesitated.
"...Yes."
"I thought if I performed too well early on, it would be easy to..."
"That's nothing to be ashamed of," Morin cut in.
"And this isn't anywhere else."
"Here, strength speaks."
"No one will sabotage you for being too good."
"No one would dare."
"Do you understand?"
"...Yes."
Song Shu was still hesitant.
"You'll be piloting a mech I designed," Morin said calmly.
"I don't want people thinking the pilot was chosen through connections."
Seeing Song Shu fall back into indecision, Morin added one last push.
"Also."
"The mechs I design can only be piloted by the best."
"I understand!"
The moment mechs were mentioned, Song Shu's hesitation vanished.
Morin's words were like a blade.
Clean.
Decisive.
They cut through the tangled mess in his heart and cleared a path forward.
He was right.
Song Shu decided.
Starting tomorrow-
He would show his true strength.
