The moment the train pierced through the dimensional barrier, the world outside shifted in an instant. The sky was a deep, otherworldly violet, and their airborne carriage cruised at dizzying heights, revealing a sprawling landscape below—mountains rolling into the distance, forests thick and vibrant, rivers winding like silver threads.
It was nothing like the barren hellscape Draconis Yi had pictured. If anything, it was beautiful.
"Wow, it's gorgeous…" Asia breathed, her eyes wide with wonder. For someone who'd never traveled so far from home, it was overwhelming in the best way.
The compartment door slid open, and Sona Sitri and her peerage stepped in to say their goodbyes.
"We're almost at the Sitri territory. This is our stop," Sona announced.
Rias smiled, nodding. "We'll catch up soon, I'm sure."
"Of course. See you later." With that, Sona and her group departed, and the train continued on.
Draconis Yi had figured they'd reach their destination quickly, but even after arriving in the Underworld, the journey dragged on for another hour. The train didn't seem in any hurry to stop.
"Are we there yet?" Xenovia asked, peering out the window. "It's been ages since we left the Sitri territory. The Underworld really is massive."
Akeno smiled. "Almost. We're already above our territory."
Rias joined in. "That's right. This is all Gremory land now—most of it untouched, forests and mountains as far as you can see."
Suddenly, Rias clapped her hands, as if remembering something important.
"Oh, that's right—Draconis Yi, Asia, Xenovia, I'll be gifting each of you a portion of the territory. If you see a spot you like, just let me know."
Asia and Xenovia blinked in surprise. "You're giving us land?"
Draconis Yi was just as stunned.
"Of course!" Rias replied cheerfully. "You're peerage devils of the future Gremory head. It's only natural you get your own territory. Akeno and Koneko already have theirs."
With a flourish, Rias conjured a magical map, spreading it out in the air for everyone to see.
"Here—red areas are already claimed, but the rest is up for grabs. Just pick and it's yours~"
Draconis Yi stared at the map, momentarily speechless. Overnight, he'd become a lord. Not bad for someone who'd spent most of his life as a regular guy.
Well, Rias was his wife-to-be, and as the next Gremory head, sharing a little of her estate hardly seemed out of line… right?
He grinned to himself. Long live the kept man.
After the initial shock, Draconis Yi shrugged it off. Land and titles—these things used to be distant dreams, but now, as a devil, they were just part of the package.
Another ten minutes passed before a sprawling city appeared on the horizon, its layout neat and orderly even from the sky.
"That's the Gremory family's main seat," Rias said, pride in her voice. "Designed by a famous architect, too."
Looking down at the vast metropolis, it was hard to believe this was just one district in the Gremory domain.
The train descended smoothly into the city, and Akeno reminded everyone to gather their things.
"Is Azazel-sensei not joining us?" Asia asked, glancing around.
"I've got other business—I'll head straight to Maou Ridge and catch up with you all later," Azazel replied with a wave.
No one pressed for details. A governor's schedule was bound to be packed, and there were bigger things at play.
They followed Rias onto the platform, where a thunderous welcome awaited. Rows of devil soldiers stood in perfect formation, and the sky erupted in a shower of fireworks.
The spectacle was so grand, anyone watching might think a royal delegation had arrived.
For Rias, this was just another homecoming.
Asia shrank back, overwhelmed by the sheer scale of it all. Draconis Yi squeezed her hand and offered a reassuring smile.
She relaxed instantly, happiness blooming on her face as she walked beside him.
"Thank you, everyone. I'm home," Rias called out, her smile warm as she greeted the soldiers and the line of maids waiting up front.
A silver-haired maid approached, her presence commanding.
It was Grayfia, Sirzechs's wife—the legendary Queen of the Underworld.
"Lady Rias, welcome home. You're early, and I'm glad to see you and your peerage have arrived safely. Please, the carriage is waiting."
"I'll ride with everyone," Rias replied. "Asia and the others are new here—they're a bit nervous."
"Of course, I'll arrange it right away."
Grayfia, despite being Rias's sister-in-law, maintained a respectful formality that struck Draconis Yi as odd. Maybe that was just devil hierarchy at work. He wasn't about to judge—devil culture was devil culture.
Everyone piled into the luxurious carriage. For Draconis Yi, it was a first—he'd never ridden in a horse-drawn carriage before.
It was strange: the Underworld had been connected to the human world for ages, but so much here still clung to old traditions. Technology didn't seem to have made much headway.
Cars would be easy enough to import, wouldn't they? Then again, maybe devils just didn't need them.
What exists, exists for a reason. No point overthinking it.
This was Draconis Yi's first time in the Underworld, and every moment brought something new.
The carriage rolled down a broad avenue, passing an enormous open plaza. In the center, a towering building dominated the skyline.
"What's that place? It's incredible…" Xenovia murmured.
"That's just one of my family's buildings," Rias answered casually. "It's where we eat and sleep."
…Just one building, and it was only a part of the house? Draconis Yi had never heard anyone talk about their home like that.
The carriage finally pulled into the castle proper. Draconis Yi and the others followed Rias out, greeted by twin rows of beautiful maids and a pristine red carpet stretching to the door.
The pageantry was off the charts.
Draconis Yi, still thinking like a modern human despite his new devil status, couldn't help but chuckle to himself.
Such decadent, aristocratic excess…
