Sakumo thought for a moment and decided they should fight.
"The ninja world has been unstable lately. The other villages are getting restless. We should eliminate their active forces beforehand. However, Konoha and the Cloud are still technically allies, so we can't attack them directly. It's better to ambush them disguised as the Mist and then leave."
Hearing this, An Yan had a new idea.
"Let's disguise ourselves as the Stone. I'll use the Reanimation Jutsu to control the Mist ninja and attack them. Then, we'll hit them from both sides and wipe them out. We can leave one or two survivors to stir up trouble for the Stone Village."
Sakumo's eyes lit up. He patted An Yan's shoulder.
"No wonder you're the leader. You're a cunning one."
An Yan rolled his eyes at him and immediately began to prepare the Reanimation Jutsu. He slapped his hand on the ground, and a dozen sacrifices appeared. These were spies he had taken from the Konoha prison before they left. Their brains had already been over-searched by the Intelligence Division, turning them into drooling idiots. This was a good way to put them to use.
An Yan had originally wanted to use White Zetsu, but they were a precious resource in Konoha. If he used them openly, it would be difficult to write the mission report, and it would likely attract resentment.
The paper scraps of the Reanimation Jutsu surrounded the sacrifices, transforming them into the Mist ninja who had attacked Uzushio. An Yan placed prepared talismans into their heads.
With the preparations complete, they set up an ambush along the Cloud ninja's path.
Toroi was the commander of the Cloud's operation. For some reason, this mission gave him a sense of unease. As his team got closer to Uzushio, the sense of danger grew stronger, until he felt like he had a target on his back.
Toroi suddenly stopped and raised his hand. The other ninja immediately halted. His second-in-command came over.
"Lord Toroi."
Toroi took a deep breath. "I have a bad feeling about this. Have the sensory ninja check again."
The second-in-command nodded. "Yes, Lord Toroi."
This Lord Toroi was a rare Magnet Release user and was highly respected by the Cloud ninja.
Soon, the sensory ninja's report came back.
"Lord Toroi, it seems we're too late. The Uzumaki clan members in Uzushio are all dead. I sense a dozen elite Mist ninja cleaning up the ruins, probably collecting the Uzumaki's sealing jutsu. The Seven Swordsmen of the Mist are leading them."
Toroi frowned. A dozen Mist ninja, plus the Seven Swordsmen. It was going to be a tough fight.
"Everyone, prepare for battle. The Seven Swordsmen are not to be underestimated."
The Cloud ninja quickened their pace. But halfway there, they were suddenly ambushed.
The mist in the forest after the rain suddenly thickened, enveloping them. Then came the sound of clashing weapons and screams.
An Yan and his team had attacked. They couldn't let them reach Uzushio. If they saw that the village was untouched, their cover would be blown.
In the thick mist, the ninja fought. The reanimated Mist ninja were immune to damage, and with the cover of the mist, the Cloud ninja were caught off guard and immediately lost four or five men.
"Wind Style: Typhoon Passage!"
A wind-style user tried to blow away the mist, but it was useless. The Land of Whirlpools was near the sea, with abundant water resources, which made water-style jutsu more effective. The mist was thick and continuous, impossible to blow away.
Instead, the wind-style user was targeted by An Yan, who sent three reanimated ninja after him.
Toroi was fighting off Fuguki's Samehada while retreating. "Are the Mist trying to break the peace treaty and start another war?"
An Yan, controlling Fuguki, replied, "Why not?"
Toroi's Magnet Release was not yet fully developed. He could only magnetize iron objects with his chakra. Against a biological weapon like the Samehada, he was at a disadvantage. And every attack from the Samehada drained a large amount of his chakra.
After just a few exchanges, Toroi knew he was no match for Fuguki. He shouted, "All squads, retreat! Abandon the mission! Now!"
An Yan, controlling the reanimated ninja, deliberately let seven or eight of them escape. The rest were killed, to be used for future reanimation and interrogation.
Toroi and his men fled in panic. After a long chase, before they could even catch their breath, they ran into the Konoha ANBU disguised as Stone ninja.
An Yan, disguised as the Stone Jonin, Higashi Shinin, saw Toroi's disheveled state and his eyes lit up.
"Isn't this the Magnet Release user Toroi from the Cloud Village? It looks like you've run into some tough opponents."
Toroi cursed inwardly but maintained a calm expression. "What is the meaning of this, Stone Village? Does the Land of Earth want to go to war with the Land of Lightning?"
An Yan and his men surrounded them but did not attack immediately. "The Mist attacked the Land of Whirlpools. We all know why we're here. Since you got here first, you must have gotten some of their stuff. Hand it over, and I'll let you live."
An Yan was demanding the Uzumaki's sealing jutsu, which Toroi obviously didn't have. But An Yan was just looking for a plausible excuse. A just cause makes everything seem reasonable.
The two groups started fighting. An Yan began to show off various earth-style jutsu.
Earth Style: Earth Spear!
Earth Style: Earth Fissure Palm!
Earth Style: Earth and Stone Dragon!
Toroi, with the help of his subordinates, managed to escape. He looked back at An Yan's group with hatred and swore to get revenge.
"Stone ninja, right? You just wait."
Seeing Toroi escape, An Yan stopped holding back. With a wave of his hand, Sakumo cleanly finished off the last two who were still fighting.
"That should have maxed out their hatred for the Stone Village, right?" An Yan stroked the stubble on his chin and pondered.
Sakumo walked over, looking puzzled. "By right, the Stone and Sand should have also sent people here. Why haven't we seen them?"
