Chapter 42 - "Eight-Clawed Spider" Varys

"Coburn! Can you get a different one? You've been using this dead chick for two weeks, and the stench is coming into the house!" Ellery's shout interrupted Witt's thoughts.

Qyburn was casting a resurrection spell on the corpse of a chick. The chick slowly stood up, then lay motionless for less than two seconds before collapsing back to the ground, clearly only partially successful due to insufficient magic power. After a few days, when his magic power recovered, Qyburn cast the spell on the chick again, repeating this process, but he didn't change the chick; he just kept focusing on the same corpse.

Ellery Hightower and Qyburn are about the same age. Qyburn is in charge of logistics at the school, while Ellery is in charge of the library. Ellery has some illusionary talent and loves to read, while Qyburn has summoning talent. They also take care of each other in their daily lives. However, Ellery lives in an aristocratic family and is very clean, while Qyburn is always dirty and is often scolded by Ellery.

Trinity Shad practiced her most basic healing spells on a chicken. The chicken had been plucked clean of all its feathers. She made a small cut with a knife, cast a healing spell, and the wound healed very slowly. The chicken's feet were tied with a rope, so it could only cluck in place. However, it wouldn't suffer for long before it was stewed that night.

Magic schools often buy live animals to practice magic, mostly chickens, which can be eaten afterward. However, in the more than ten years since Victor was born, he has never killed a chicken.

She was also very interested in alchemy. She had been learning about poisons from her father, Prince Oberon, and some poisons required magical knowledge. Now that she had learned the authentic alchemy of Witte, the variety and toxicity of her poisons improved by leaps and bounds.

His wife, Nymeria Martell, sparred with Ashara Dayne on the training field. Nymeria's Dornish spear emitted a green light as she repeatedly stabbed Ashara's vital points, and she would also occasionally throw a throwing knife.

Asara, wielding a sword in each hand, dodged and parried left and right, occasionally managing to retaliate. Before long, Asara was covered in wounds and blood. With one hand, she stuffed her protruding intestines back into her stomach, while with the other, she unleashed an ice spear that pierced through Nymeria's thigh.

With Witt by their side, the two fought with abandon, and as long as his head wasn't cut off, Witt could be saved.

Nymeria has no magical talent, so she can only make breakthroughs in martial arts, but her weapons have all been coated with deadly poison by her sister.

Asara possesses talents in both transformation and destruction, but her magic power is limited and she cannot squander it like a pure mage. Therefore, she learns martial arts while studying magic. The swordsmanship of the Dane family cannot be wasted, and Witt plans to have her follow the path of a melee mage.

Renly is still on his way back to King's Landing. He has all the same talents as Witt, but his Restoration and Anomaly talents are the most outstanding. Talents also vary in level, which determines the upper limit.

Therefore, Renly will likely reach the top level in Restoration and Transmutation, but only the intermediate level in the other three magic types. He can compensate for his lack of strength with skill and develop other methods of using magic to make up for his lack of natural talent. So, because of his twin brother Witt, Renly is a normal person in this world with exceptionally high magical talent.

Soros has destructive and restorative talents. He went out to purchase supplies and is now working as an errand runner and field manager at the school.

Now, the school is filled with people of all ages, and Witt and Renly are not capable of doing any work, leaving only the two ladies, so Soros has to take on the burden. Actually, he's not tired at all; his former mercenary brothers, knowing he's entered magic school, are all too busy currying favor with him, and they do a lot of the work for him.

The magic schools of today all teach the magic system that Witt brought from the game system, combined with personal exploration and learning of other schools of thought, such as Soros's Red God system. Under Witt's summary and categorization, all of these are incorporated into the school's magic system. The basic framework is the same, but the use of magic is not bound by any particular style. Everyone here has their own magical style.

Witt felt the magic circle vibrate; someone had entered the mage school with a token.

The newcomer was Varys, the "Eight-Clawed Spider." Witte led the way to the drawing room, with Varys following behind. He was a eunuch who liked to wear elaborate clothes and apply perfume, and he walked without making a sound.

"Lord Witt, I am very sorry. Yesterday, one of my 'little birds' was so curious about the magic school that he stole my token and tried to sneak in." He was there to apologize. The little birds were orphan children trained by Varys to gather intelligence. Yesterday, one of them tried to sneak into the school but was caught.

On his outstretched palm lay a small Valyrian steel cube and a die. Witte had made the keepsake in the shape of a die, mainly because it was easiest to make a cube; the dots engraved around the edges were purely for fun.

"You think you can just walk around the school without any problems just by having this token?" Witt looked at Varys. "Do you remember our promise?"

"Of course I remember. We don't spy on each other. Apart from the normal intelligence we provide to the King and the Royal Council, we exchange other private intelligence requests on an equal footing." Varys smiled wryly, sweat dripping from his forehead and blurring the pinkness on his face.

Varys could never forget the fear spell that Witte had used on him at the royal council years ago—those were his deepest secrets. He had investigated Witte later, and the more he learned, the more he understood Witte's power. Now, meeting Witte alone risked his demise at any moment, but Varys had his own way of surviving, and feigning weakness in the face of the strong clearly suited his current situation.

"Stop with your rhetoric and fake acting. We're all smart people, but there's one thing you don't understand: we don't spy on each other, firstly because your abilities are still useful to the country, and secondly because I simply don't want to deal with you."

You'll only ever have a partial understanding of my situation, while I know yours perfectly well!

After Witt finished speaking, a purple magical light emanated from his eyes. A cat and a mouse emerged from the corner of the living room and climbed onto the table, their eyes also flashing purple as they looked at Varys.

"Where the little birds can go, they can go; where the little birds can't go, they can go too. I know the Red Keep's secret passages better than you do."

This was the first time Varys had ever seen anything like this. He had seen wizards in the Eastern Continent, but compared to Witt, they were nothing but charlatans.

"I understand. From now on, as long as I am alive, I will never let any little birds disturb the lives of the mages again."

"Also, what do you think of Littlefinger Petyr Baelish? I heard he's doing a good job as the head of the sewers in King's Landing, managing to keep things running smoothly from top to bottom?" Witt asked.

[This was actually arranged by me, but Littlefinger is indeed quite capable. Through his eloquence and bribery, he climbed his way up from the lowest level of sewer cleaning official to his current position as the head of the sewers in King's Landing.]

Varys understood instantly: "My little birds need intelligence, and Lord Baelish manages the city's sewers. It's a normal working relationship between us."

"Oh, normal cooperation is fine. We are all subjects of the same court, so we should cooperate with each other. I won't see you off then. Just do your job as the chief intelligence officer. You'd better not get involved in the world of mages anymore. At least I'm reasonable. If you had encountered someone else, you might have really lost your life."

Hearing that Varys had tactfully left, he turned back before he had gone far and said, "Lord Witt, could you help me find a wizard on your trip to the Eastern Continent? My little birds on the Eastern Continent can help you."

"Why not? Tell me in detail. You started your career in the Eastern Continent, and I'll inevitably need your intelligence on this trip." Victor immediately agreed.

Varys's willingness to reveal his secrets in exchange can only be seen as a temporary concession. He and his little birds are spread throughout Westeros and the Eastern Continent, and their intelligence-gathering abilities are currently unmatched. However, he is also very shrewd and always leaves himself a way out, and more than one.

The key is that I only know some secrets by time travel, but now I have changed a lot of history, and the future is gradually becoming unknown. I may receive wrong information in the future, kill the wrong enemies, and be made a fool of by the real enemies without even knowing it.

Until a suitable intelligence agent is found, Varys needs to be retained; his magic is very valuable. But this person needs to be kept in check regularly, and there needs to be a sufficient exchange of benefits, otherwise he'll sell you even the color of your underwear to others as a joke.
