Before Nevaeh could even reach the door, Cassius grabbed her arm. His voice was tight, full of urgency. "He's with the Black Magic Organization."
Nevaeh whirled around to face him, her eyes blazing with a pain so raw it hurt to look at.
Tears welled up, but they were hot with anger, not sadness. "I don't care who he is!" she shouted, her voice cracking. "He killed my grandmother! I will make him pay!"
Her grandmother had been so good, so simple.
She never bothered anyone. And for her to die like that… Nevaeh would get revenge, no matter what.
Cassius watched her, seeing the tears and the utter despair in her eyes. His own heart clenched, and he didn't know what to say.
What words could possibly fix this? Instead, he gave up on words. He bent down and pulled her into a gentle embrace, letting her cry.
And in that one moment, held safely against him, all the pain she'd been holding back finally broke free.
