Chapter 60 - Chapter 59- Break the Serpent’s Heart

The fortress howled like a living god in pain. The walls flexed, veins tightening, serpents spilling from ruptured growths. The ground shook under the strain of its collapsing body.

Alpha and Beta converged into the same chamber, its scale immense — a cathedral of flesh and stone. At the center pulsed the Heart: a writhing mass of glowing tissue, arteries stretching in all directions like serpentine chains.

The Serpent commanders encircled it — hulking abominations clad in bone armor, wings of shadow spreading behind them. Their hiss echoed like war drums.

---

The Push Forward

Reed stretched his arms into shield-lances, shoving back serpents while barking orders. "Alpha, secure the perimeter! Beta, plant the charges on the junction nodes!"

Greta burned a path open, her runes flaring with fury. Jessica shielded her allies, pushing barriers forward like rolling walls.

But it was Vanessa who shattered the balance.

She walked into the chamber, unhurried, Juggernaut stomping beside her like a war engine. The Serpent commanders struck first, spears of black ichor hurled like javelins.

Vanessa caught one mid-air. The spear shattered against her palm.

The shards cut deep — then melted into nothing as she redirected the damage outward. A Serpent commander howled as its own body split apart.

"Your tricks won't work on me," she whispered, eyes glowing crimson.

Beta's Gambit

Natasha sprinted through the chaos, setting detonators on the junction nodes that fed into the Heart. Varisa blasted open a path with razor winds, slicing drones apart.

Delilah spun fire and lightning together into a storm that fried anything that got too close, her face twisted with both exhaustion and defiance. "Keep them off Natasha, or this was for nothing!"

Baymax hovered above, scanning. "Warning: structural collapse likely in 4 minutes."

Natasha smirked grimly. "Then let's make it count."

---

The Battle Tightens

The Serpent generals clashed with Juggernaut. The fortress floor cracked as his massive fists met their bladed wings, shockwaves shaking the chamber.

Greta fell to one knee, drained, but Candy's lightning (channeled through the storm her allies fed) ripped into the Serpent's flank. Louis covered her with blades of light. Mona's demons tore through the smaller serpents with hellfire, their shrieks filling the air.

Jessica staggered but kept barriers up, her small shield disks snapping forward to decapitate serpents before they could breach the line.

It wasn't enough. The Heart began to scream, pulling energy into itself, glowing brighter, swelling like a volcano about to erupt.

---

Vanessa's Choice

"Everyone—fall back!" Reed shouted. "It's going to unleash everything it has!"

But Vanessa didn't move. She stepped closer to the Heart, the glow illuminating her face. Her body rippled as wounds began appearing across her skin—then healing, then appearing again. She was channeling the Heart's destructive energy into herself.

"Vanessa—stop!" Luna Snow cried out, ice spreading across the chamber to shield her.

Vanessa smiled faintly, though her voice trembled.

"All my life, I wanted to be whole. Now, I know what I am. I can take this. I can end this."

The energy that should have vaporized the strike force tore into Vanessa's body… only to rebound, exploding outward and eviscerating the Serpent generals.

The chamber collapsed in pieces, arteries snapping like broken bridges, ichor flooding the ground.

---

The Last Push

With the generals obliterated, Natasha triggered the charges. Explosions tore through the fortress veins.

Greta and Delilah combined fire and sigils, channeling the energy into the Heart. Jessica threw her barriers like blades, slicing open its outer layer.

Juggernaut drove his fists into its core, splitting it in two.

And Vanessa, her body glowing like a living star, redirected all the damage one last time—shattering the Heart in a detonation of crimson light.

---

The Silence After

When the dust cleared, the fortress was nothing but ruins. The Heart was gone. The veins had gone dark.

The heroes stood among the rubble, battered, bloodied, but alive.

And at the center stood Vanessa, her form flickering, glowing faintly as though barely holding together.

She looked at the strike force and said only one thing:

"It's not over yet. This was only their body. Their mind… their will… is still out there."

The chamber fell silent as everyone realized: the war with the Black Serpents was far from finished.
