Chapter 7 - 5 - Informants

"Ah Ying!'" Sumeijian cried out for one of servants, serving Li family, clearly agitated over her absence when she needed help the most.

"Ah Ying, where're you?" She again called out but again no response.

Since the maid was not in any of the rooms, there was just one place left for her to head down to.

Entering the kitchen which could only be entered by servants and chefs, she finally spotted her and made her frustration known. Especially since it was just them around that time.

"Ah Ying, are you deaf?" She asked in anger. "I keep calling you. Why didn't you respond?"

However, Ah Ying was not only unaffected but stood firm on her ground by answering, "Can't you see I'm preparing herbal soup for our old master? Besides, who're you related to our family by asking me to serve you? You must be joking!"

"How dare you speak to me even as maid!" Sumeijian became more irritated by her maid arguing while preparing the boiling claypot on cooking stove. "Let me tell you, even your entire Li family's fortune is not even a third of mine. I'm supposed to be a special guest here. Even your Madam and young master listens to me."

"So?" The maid again was undeterred as she maintained her firm standard. "Who do you think you're? Empress, princess or special VIP guest? If so, how do you end up in such sorry state? Our young master and Madam took you in out of sympathy. In end of being demanding for this and that, you should be grateful."

"Who're you to speak to me that way? You're just another servant here!" Sumeijian did not like to be outtalked by anyone in another situation let alone a lowly maid. "If not for your young master begging me to stay here, I won't even bother."

"Oh really? Speaking of young master, please stop daydreaming of being his woman. You don't stand any chance!"

"Hey! If you are my servant and this is my house, I'll punish you for talking to me that way!" Sumeijian's blood boiled as hot as the burning kettle on the stove.

"Sure! If you want to punish me for insubordination, please go ahead. I'll let Madam and both masters know you're abusing and bullying me!" Ah Ying continued her jeering as she clearly did not like the way Sumeijian talked to her.

Unknown to them both, Li Teng Yuan overheard everything with his other servant Ah Fu as he wanted to see how Ah Ying was doing initially.

Now that the answers presented themselves right before him, he changed his mind.

Upon entering the living area, he turned to and instructed Ah Fu: "You can go back and rest now."

"Understood, old master." Ah Fu acknowledged as he left for servant quarters just as his wife Qian An entered.

"How has the banquet been?" She asked as they both took their seats before the table.

"It went very well." Teng Yuan answered. "Turns out the Majesty is organizing this banquet not just for Royal Highness but also General Xue Lei."

At the mention of the renowned Dai military commander's name, Qian An's eyes lightened up and she asked again, "General Xue has returned?"

Teng Yuan nodded his head in confirmation. "Though we met and exchanged a few words after the banquet, he looked tired and wanted to rest early which I totally understand. For years of fighting our Shibeibu enemies out in the battlefields has clearly taken a toll on him."

"I'm happy to hear his return." Said Qian An. "If not for him and what his men has done, our Dai Dynasty won't last, and we'll not even be here."

"Yes. There's something else I need to discuss with you," Teng Yuan decided to relate what he just saw a while ago. "It's about the girl Sumeijian our son Neng Yuan rescued and brought home. I don't think she is what we think she is."

"What makes you say that?" His wife asked with a smile.

"I think she has a motive to be in our home though I cannot be certain for now. Just now as I passed by the kitchen, I heard her arguing with our servant Ah Ying for not serving her. Her tone was very demanding and mean. To be honest, this is my first and hopefully last time I am seeing this here. Besides, our Capital City has always been safe and secure and now our son promoted as law enforcement commander. So, if that is the case, how can a robbery happen on of all people, a girl like Sumeijian?"

His tone in mentioning last certainly was serious and meant business.

"Really?" His wife continued smiling as she asked again. "I have a different view. Though she tends to be straightforward in the way she talks, she is active and intelligent."

"That's not all." Teng Yuan continued sharing his observation. "Another thing I noticed is that she keeps bothering our son Neng Yuan. No matter what she is or thinks she is, she is still outsider and not related to us. Also, we do not know her background. If word gets out about this, it'll affect our family reputation since I'm Chief Advisor in Imperial Royal Circle and our son is now West District major. Looking at what just happened, I think it is best we send her home."

"If that is your decision, I'll respect it," His wife agreed though her smile never left her face. "It's getting late now, and you need early rest for what is ahead tomorrow."

"You go ahead first," Teng Yuan urged her. "I'll be in study room first to sort out certain matters and then I join you."

Madam Qian An nodded and they both made their way upstairs.

Behind their backs, Sumeijian heard their entire discussion just as she left the kitchen and was about to make her way up to her room through rather large living room.

Problem is old master - as Madam called him - and whom she assumed as her husband and Neng Yuan's father - happened to get in her way. While she had no issues getting along with Madam and her son, she could not say the same for her husband and her son's father Chief Advisor Li Teng Yuan – if she recalled his rank and name correctly. Because when she woke up in their place, only he was absent.

He must have overheard her arguing with maid Ah Ying just as she just did the same thing right now and she was not happy with what they discussed about.

That wretched old man! Who does he think he is? She asked herself in silent anger. However, she did not intend to get back at him due to his high important rank and status within both Dai Imperial Court and his family residence. Good thing that they did not retire to bed together. despite making their way up the stairs as that old man intended to handle his own affairs in his study chamber.

Want to get rid of me? It won't be so easy! While being mindful of her surroundings, she intended to target his wife and Neng Yuan's mother Madam Qian An considering the fact that she was a woman like herself.

"What're you doing here, sneaking around like that?" That accursed maid suddenly asked from behind, almost scaring her, as she obviously entered the same entrance from the kitchen.

"What I'm doing is none of your business!" Sumeijian replied bluntly. Seeing the maid with that claypot of herbal soup on plate, she added, "You want to serve old master herbal soup? Better do it while it's still hot. I'm going back to my room."

"Your room?" Ah Ying echoed her last two words in mockery. "Please don't make me laugh. This is not your room nor your home! Our young master and Madam just gave you a place to stay temporarily out of empathy. And can you please excuse me? I need to head to Old Master's study chamber to serve him soup as supper."

Making jeering face at what she perceived as arrogant maid, Sumeijian gave way reluctantly. After seeing that maid going up halfway through the stairs, she decided to make her next move. Walking up the same stairway and making sure that no one saw her along the second-floor corridor, she quietly made her way to master bedroom while that maid entered the study chamber.

The door was only open slightly and she could see Madam changing into her bed robes. Looking around to see nobody around and assuming that Ah Ying was still in Old Master's study chamber, she produced something from her pocket.

Since you decided to get rid of me, I decided to let you have a taste of this! She took out the blowpipe and instantly blew upon the tip. Out from the other end, a small needle flew out and lodged into the back of Madam's neck accurately without her knowing and even feeling it.

Overjoyed at what she saw, she again muttered to herself in mind. Tomorrow by noon, you'll know what Huo Yang needle feels like. You'll start feeling hot and then itchy all over your body. Even if you want to get rid of me, you'll eventually beg me to come back!

Seeing that her plan worked perfectly, Sumeijian left the room and made her way quietly to hers, confident that her actions would soon yield the desired results.

Suddenly, she heard melodic strains of a flute drifting from a nearby balcony. Her interest sparked as she chose to explore the source.

The Li family residence balcony was nestled amidst a serene backdrop of towering pine trees.

It was a tranquil space, offering a view of the lush, verdant foliage that enveloped the estate. The aroma of pine leaves wafted through the air, creating a soothing atmosphere around the balcony. The wooden railing, weathered by years of exposure, showcased the character of the residence and provided a picturesque setting for moments of reflection and relaxation.

Li Neng Yuan discovered comfort and a means of self-expression within these partially natural and suburban surroundings. Seated on the ledge, he expertly played the flute. His skilful melodies intertwined with the fragrant breeze and the ambiance of the residence.

While playing, he could not help detecting someone's presence. He decided to pause, turning his gaze towards the person watching him. Facing Sumeijian, he acknowledged her with a warm smile before saying: "It's getting late now. Do you have problem sleeping too?"

Sensing concern in the tone of the man she was infatuated with, Sumeijian instantly forgot all about her resentment towards his father and decided to play along by simply nodding her head and answering: "Yes."

Getting down from the ledge and facing the surrounding pine trees, he asked again, "Sumeijian, do you miss home?"

"Yes, I do." Sumeijian did her best to continue her portrayal of depressed daughter who just lost his father. "My dad's gone and so is my mother. Now I'm all alone without family and home."

Turning back to her with his smile again, he suggested, "If you want, you can stay at my home. Though speaking of home, I do miss too like you. As a kid, I used to play this flute in my hometown."

"But you're staying with your parents and have servants to attend to all your needs." Sumeijian asked as she was puzzled by his last sentence.

"Yes, I am staying with my parents and servants. But this is not our home." Neng Yuan's face now turned grim upon saying those words. "Our real home was in the first Dai Capital. There's something I don't really understand no matter how much I keep thinking."

"What do you don't understand?" Sumeijian decided to draw closer to him, upon sensing an opportunity in his seemingly strange reaction.

"On this Yuexin system, there are only two kingdoms." Neng Yuan replied. "But whether we belong to Dai Dynasty or Shibeibu Empire, we're still humans. And as humans, can't we live in peace and harmony? Why must we fight war and kill each other?"

At this moment, Sumeijian did not know how to respond or even react. Because deep in her heart, she already knew she belonged to the other side. She could and should have the same mindset as her actual father and all those under him. Yet what she saw in him was what she just could not see and find in others. Not even her father.

"But I won't and never forget how Shibeibu soldiers plundered our first Capital City and killed everybody they saw. Including my uncle and relatives! One day, they'll pay for the lives they took! And when that happens, I'll make sure justice is being served as commander!"

His sudden change from calmness to anger took her by surprise. Her confidence just minutes ago turned to fear as his last word commander immediately reminded her of his status as head of law enforcement. Though she knew she was not honest with him and his family, her love for him blinded her to what he was capable of. Sooner or later, he would uncover the truth about the dead man she falsely declared as her father and how she came to be in the city.

She hoped she was just being sensitive and making assumptions. But his tone - at that moment - revealed his other side.

The next morning, a sleek hovercraft descended onto the balcony platform of the Li Residence, futuristic and gleaming in the sunlight.

After a moment of identification and clearance, the carriage gracefully touched down. Inside were three individuals: Zhou Kai, the skilled driver, and two palace maids, Er Fen and Ying Er. While Zhou Kai remained at the helm to ensure the vehicle's security, Er Fen and Ying Er alighted and made their way towards the Li Residence's entrance.

Their presence indicated that they were bearers of a message from their Royal Highness.

"What?" Neng Yuan asked in surprise as he was still having breakfast with his mother in his grey bed attire. "The Highness wants to see me at this early hour?"

"Yes, she wants to see you now. That's why we're here." One of them with green hair answered though otherwise their attire was the same in sky blue tunic over their white robes and cotton headbands who resembled very much like headphones.

"But right now, I'm having breakfast with my mother," He said, looking at the just boiled eggs, hot potatoes and bacon on his plate. "Even if you insist, you have to ask my mother first."

"Of course!" His mother Madam Qian Er said as she stared back at him with her firm look. "I've asked my servants to be up early just to prepare these for you. If you are going to leave now without eating, I'm going to be very angry and upset!"

Neng Yuan in turn glanced back towards the two handmaidens before confirming his reply. "Sorry, ladies. You heard my mom. I'm afraid you've to wait until I finished my breakfast."

"No problem. We can wait." This time it was the other pink-haired maid's turn to answer.

Upon finishing his breakfast and changing into his formal white attire and blue tunic - the exact one he wore at homecoming banquet, Neng Yuan joined the maids and driver in hovercraft.

Driver Zhou Kai activated the blue bubble glass casing which enveloped them within the vehicle for safety before starting the launch engines. Upon his commands, the artificial intelligence system responded by rotating the wheels to 180 degrees before the whole vehicle launched itself with rear blue flames emitting for a while.

Upon lifting into the skies, the aerial view of West District was even more spectacular.

Both manors and apartment buildings stretched out in an organized and picturesque fashion. Rows of those with elaborate, traditional Dai architecture stood in grandeur amidst lush greenery. Their sky blue-tiled roofs added a touch of classical charm to the landscape and blended perfectly with the daylight skies. Manicured gardens and courtyards were visible in the back, a testament to the residents' appreciation for aesthetics and nature.

Each offered a different style and appeal. Their modern design and towering heights contrasted with the classical elegance of the manors. The sleek glass windows and steel structures indicated a more contemporary lifestyle. Each apartment complex had its own unique character, contributing to the district's diversity.

The entire scene was framed by the pine trees that were thoughtfully integrated into the district's layout. These trees acted as a natural buffer, providing a sense of tranquility and privacy to the residents. Their lush green canopy provided a beautiful contrast to the architectural structures, creating a harmonious blend of urban living and natural beauty.

The top view from hovercraft showcased the meticulous planning and architectural diversity. It was where tradition met modernity, where elegance and functionality coexisted, and where the natural world was seamlessly integrated into urban landscape.

Minutes later, the hovercraft landed smoothy on the carpeted runaway before the majestic Dai Pavilion Hall entrance.

Like Garden Hall, the building itself stood as a monumental symbol of the Dai Dynasty's rich cultural heritage. The exterior of the hall was a sight to behold, with its imposing structure that reflected centuries of traditional architecture. The grand entrance was flanked by eight colossal pillars, each intricately adorned with ornate carvings and motifs. They created an awe-inspiring path leading to the heart of the hall.

Upon venturing further, they were greeted by an awe-inspiring indoor space. The vast hall showcased a diverse array of patterns, ranging from the detailed designs on the majestic white pillars to the exquisite and vast ceilings. The inviting, golden shades of the wooden beams and columns perfectly complemented the lively blues and whites that adorned the walls and furniture.

Shortly after, they were greeted by the melodious strains of the Dai Qin string instrument, played by the Royal Highness herself. The chamber she was in was exquisitely designed, with love-shaped tables and cushioned chairs that added an air of sophistication and elegance. The room was adorned with traditional artwork and tapestries that celebrated the kingdom's cultural heritage.

Within the ring center like homecoming banquet, the Highness sat before the magnificently crafted bamboo table. Her elegant figure, also in a flowing white clothing and blue tunic, was complemented by the opulent love-shaped cushion chair she sat upon. Before her lay a rather large Dai Qin string instrument, its shape resembling a love symbol, resting gracefully on the bamboo table. As she skilfully plucked the strings, her fingers moved in perfect harmony with the sweet melodies, filling the hall with enchanting music that captivated all who listened.

For Neng Yuan, witnessing the Highness's exclusive performance was an awe-inspiring experience. The way she played the instrument was not only captivating but also demonstrated her remarkable skill. It was way better than even his own flute performance last night, and he could not help but marvelled at her talent besides beauty and personality he already seen and experienced.

While still standing in the hall chamber, he could not help but felt as though he had been transported to a serene natural wonderland. The architectural marvels of the chamber had the remarkable ability to immerse its visitors in an environment that transcended mere structural beauty. The glass panels that adorned the walls allowed for an unobstructed view of what seemed to be riverbanks, with a gently flowing waterfall glistening in the soft sunlight. The illusion was so convincing that it almost felt as if he could hear the soothing rush of water and the whispers of leaves from the surrounding trees.

The chamber's ambiance was elevated by the captivating music that surrounded it, creating an otherworldly atmosphere.

She produced a melody that mirrored the soft lapping of waves, fostering

a tranquil and peaceful environment. The resulting soundscape was reminiscent of a natural symphony, with the melodies evoking the sweet songs of birds at dawn. The seamless blend of music and visual illusion transported him to a realm where he could briefly escape the demands and responsibilities of his daily routine, allowing him to relax and unwind.

Amidst this enchanting setting, the holographic display behind her provided a visual confirmation of the idyllic scene they were experiencing. It was a remarkable fusion of technology and artistry, projecting a lifelike representation of the riverside paradise onto the chamber's walls. The seamless integration of holography and architectural design allowed the Dai Pavilion Hall to create a harmonious sanctuary that celebrated both the kingdom's cultural heritage and its technological prowess.

In this moment, he found himself not only in the presence of royalty but also within her domain and masterpiece that stirred the senses and captured the essence of natural beauty.

The pink-haired maid beckoned him to sit on a cushion placed around a smaller table, which he promptly obliged. He positioned himself directly in front of Highness, a placement that underscored the significance of their meeting.

Surveying the room, he noticed that the only other occupants besides himself were the two palace maids who had escorted him here and now positioned on either flank of her. As for the driver, he had respectfully excused himself at the main entrance, leaving Neng Yuan alone with the royal presence.

Out of respect for her as Highness, host and formal settings, Neng Yuan chose to wait patiently for her to finish her musical composition first. Her enchanting melodies had captured his full attention while at the same time, fully immersed in the process.

Upon completing what she considered to be among her musical masterpieces, Princess Dai Yu gracefully lifted her gaze towards her guest.

The ambient sounds of her composition still lingered in the air, creating an immersive experience that blended seamlessly with the artificial surroundings meticulously crafted by her attentive servants according to her exact specifications.

The atmosphere in Dai Pavilion Hall was already charged with the resonance of her melodies, underscoring the unique connection between the music and the surroundings.

As their eyes met, a silent understanding passed between them, transcending the need for words.

Dai Yu, poised amidst the carefully arranged cushions and tables, seemed to draw inspiration from the atmosphere she had created. This moment of shared acknowledgment signalled the shift from the artistic realm she had crafted to the interpersonal conversation that was about to unfold. It was a subtle yet powerful cue, marking the start of their conversation.

Adorned with a gentle smile that bespoke both grace and hospitality, she initiated the conversation with an expression of gratitude.

"Thank you for accepting my invitation and appreciating my music." She conveyed, acknowledging his presence as the only male right now.

With an air of anticipation, she leaned slightly forward, her eyes reflecting both curiosity and warmth. "Now that you are here and listened from start to finish," She continued, "can you guess what this music is all about?"

Neng Yuan was taken aback by the sudden quiz, but quickly composed himself, recognizing her intellect and passion for knowledge were on par with her fitness and combat skills from their Academy days, even surpassing his.

Well-versed in various subjects, she was well-known for her ability to thoroughly explore and master any topic that piqued her interest. While gathering his thoughts, he eagerly prepared to engage in a thought-provoking discussion about the intricate nuances and depth embedded in her musical piece.

"Your Highness, thank you too for your invitation," He expressed his gratitude as well out of respect for her status. "Though I may not play well as you, I do know this music and its source."

"Really?" She asked with her curiosity further aroused. "Tell me more."

"My first impression from listening and even entering this room," Neng Yuan replied slowly while gathering his thoughts at the same time. "was of nature and waterfall. Even though we are physically in this room, your music seemed to shift us towards a river somewhere in the forest."

"Great! I'm glad you enjoyed it." She complimented before testing him further. "But can you tell me the music title, its source and if possible, recite a poem?"

"Your Highness, while I appreciated your music and invitation, I don't think I can answer those." Neng Yuan admitted his ignorance, again being taken by surprise.

"Please take your time. I believe you can." Dai Yu continued smiling while saying.

He kept quiet, trying to remember from his past days of playing music and writing several poems that were eventually turned into songs during Academy lessons. One examination by his lecturer suddenly sprang to his mind as he recalled falling asleep after a hard day of physical training but still barely managed to keep himself awake and play the exact music as instructed.

"There was this particular poem by famous poet Qiu He." Those words came into his mind and out of his mouth by instinct. "He was supposed to sit for an examination as one of scholars but ended up coming up with this and still passed with flying colors despite doing so at last minute."

"Go on." Dai Yu encouraged him seemingly.

"The poem title is Spring Waterfall. As for the contents, it read like this:

In the heart of nature's splendid dance,

A symphony of life, a springtime trance.

Upon the rocks, with grace, it spills,

A liquid melody, as the air it fills.

From heights above, it takes the leap,

A silver ribbon, secrets to keep.

Through emerald valleys, it cascades,

A timeless journey, through sunlit shades.

Whispers of the zephyr, it captures dear,

In the cascade's embrace, joy draws near.

Crystal droplets, in the sunlight gleam,

A liquid sonnet, a poet's dream.

Among the blossoms, by the stream's side,

A dance with petals, in pure joy to bide.

Mossy stones cradle its gentle flow,

A lullaby sung, in soft undertow.

Nature's orchestra, in this cascade,

A timeless rhythm, in the woodland glade.

Spring waterfall, a serenade so sweet,

A melody of life, where dreams and waters meet."

Upon hearing his own poem version, Dai Yu applauded with amazement and delight.

For she was genuinely impressed with his poetic potential. Throughout her quest for poetic companionship, she had subjected others to the same challenge.

Problem was none managed to deliver a complete version that resonated so harmoniously with her expectations. Therefore, his exceptional talent in crafting words that echoed her artistic aspirations made him a rare find. His poem harmoniously aligned with her vision, much like a masterfully woven tapestry that complemented her artistry like their surroundings.

Upon seeing the Highness's positive reaction, Neng Yuan could not help but feel a sense of joy.

However, the curiosity bubbling within him prompted him to seek clarification from the royal host.

"Your Highness, I'm sure you don't just invite me to listen to your music and then get me to participate in your quiz, right?" He inquired, a blend of curiosity and anticipation in his tone.

The atmosphere shifted as the her expression turned serious.

She exchanged a nod with her green-haired maid who approached her and delicately retrieved the musical instrument. With great care, she withdrew through another exit door to the right, leaving a sense of intrigue hanging in the air.

She turned and did the same to her other maid, requiring her to leave as well. The latter bowed respectfully before heading for the same door her fellow maid just left through.

The sense of formality and protocol added an air of legality to the encounter, leaving Neng Yuan curious to what the Highness wants to tell him. With just two of them in the chamber, she deactivated the holographic display, bringing the surroundings back to a tangible reality before getting straight to the point.

"Yes, Neng Yuan, I do have a favor to ask from you," She clarified her reason for inviting him.

Neng Yuan, puzzled by the urgency of the request, inquired, "Your Highness, what is so important that you need to see me this early morning?"

His curiosity mingled with a genuine concern, as he tried to grasp the nature of the favor she sought.

"Firstly, I've some bad news," She began, her expression darkening. "General Xue Lei has been taken into custody for possessing our enemy weapons after his chamber was searched suddenly by Advisor Chen Xi and his men. Very early dawn before we met, his servant Ah Nan came and informed me, needing my help."

"What?" Neng Yuan could not believe what he was hearing. "But last night, he was at the banquet along with me, my father, you and the Majesty even praised him for his efforts."

The Highness, her demeanour reflecting the weight of the situation, added a layer of complexity to the narrative. "Yes. But things are not as simple as what we think. I suspect this whole banquet, though I could be wrong here, was a ploy by Grand Chancellor and his Imperial Royal Circle lackeys. Apparently, they deceived everybody, including my brother, who even as Majesty was unable to do anything."

The gravity of her news hung heavy in the air, casting a shadow over the serene chamber. Neng Yuan, still grappling with the shock of the news, sought clarification.

"Alright. But even if the Majesty cannot do anything, how do you want me to help you?" He asked.

"Not just you but your father too. Given his experience as magistrate and now Chief Advisor. Though Xue is now imprisoned, Premier Hu and his men cannot sentence him though they intend to frame him. If my speculations are correct, his next move will be seeing your father with intend of appointing him as judge to sentence Xue. That is my first point.

The second is regarding my other brother Dai Chong. Til today, his whereabouts remain unknown, but I have a strong intuition that he is still alive somewhere in the Empire. Neng Yuan, I understand you have lost your loved ones in the First Capital invasion. So do I."

"I still can't believe that General Xue Lei has been arrested," Neng Yuan could not accept what he just heard even if it came from the Highness herself. "He's a good man and great soldier. Why do they want to frame him?"

"I find it hard to believe too." She echoed his sentiments and feelings. "Even as Highness, there is not much I can do. Not even my second brother whom I believed has been now fully manipulated by Grand Chancellor and his associates."

"I need to discuss this with my father and see what we can both do as father and son," Neng Yuan did his best to assure her. "But for your other brother, it is beyond my capacity. Besides even in my current position, I can only investigate events happening here in Capital City."

Upon mentioning his last sentence, he could sense disappointment in her look.

"There is however one thing you can do though I'm not at all certain if it could help you." A suggestion suddenly came into his mind but before mentioning, he felt it was more polite to address her feelings.

"What is it?" She asked, reverting to her curious look.

"There is a fortune teller De Qi in Capital City. Many people said his analysis is accurate." Neng Yuan suggested. "Perhaps you can visit him for advice?"

"Thank you for your suggestion." She expressed her gratitude. "But I'm not superstitious and going to trust on that."

At that moment, another two servants entered the room and bowed before the Highness with one of them saying, "Your Highness, sorry to interrupt your conversation. But the Majesty requests to see you in Fencing Hall and wants us to escort you there."

"Sure." Dai Yu responded appropriately. Turning back to Neng Yuan, she continued, "Well, I must go now. Looks like we must end our discussion now as I need to do some physical workout. Still I hope you can help me."

"Thank you, your Highness." Neng Yuan offered his sincere thanks to the princess, expressing his deep appreciation for her thoughtfulness. "I and my father see what we can do."

Even though he was surprised by her unexpected invitation and subsequent requests at such early dawn, he was delighted to see her again so soon after the homecoming banquet.

After her son left to see the Highness, Madam Li Qian An instructed her maid Ah Ying to bring Sumeijian into the living chamber.

Upon her arrival, she gestured for the young lady to sit beside her before the table.

"Sumeijian," She greeted the young woman with a warm smile. "While we appreciated your presence here, we believe it will be best for you to return home as it may not be convenient for a young lady to stay indefinitely."

With a kind gesture, Madam Li reached into her pouch and pulled out a token card. She handed it to Sumeijian, saying, "Here is a token card worth 30,000 gold bars. You can use it to cover your expenses on your journey back."

When hearing Madam Li's decision, Sumeijian became very disappointed but chose to express her sadness and pleaded: "But Madam, you've been very kind to me. I don't really want to leave. Let me stay and take care of you forever."

Despite her genuine plea, Madam Li seemed determined, though she maintained a warm smile. She responded, "To be honest, I don't really want you to leave, but my husband and I decided it will be better for you to return to where you came from and hopefully settle down."

Adding to Sumeijian's frustration, the maid Ah Ying smiled at her maliciously, placing her hand on Madam's right shoulder.

"My other servant Ah Fu will send you out the door." Madam added.

Upon mentioning the last sentence, Madam Qian An felt very hot suddenly.

It started with her forehead, then her neck and entire body. Before she could even anticipate what was happening, she began feeling itchiness all over.

"Madam," Sumeijian asked with a concerned look. "you don't look well. Please let me stay to take care of you."

"Are you deaf or what?" Ah Ying threw back the question for reasons she could not understand or bother given what she was going through now. "Madam already asked you to leave. I'll look after her."

After expressing the decision to let Sumeijian go and feeling the unexpected heat and itchiness, she, accompanied by Ah Ying, left the living room as the latter offered her support, assisting her on their way upstairs. The atmosphere in the living room now carried a sense of unresolved tension and an air of discomfort.

"Madam, please look after yourself." Sumeijian forged her concerned look as best as she could even though it no longer mattered as both Madam and her wretched maid had already gone upstairs and was out of the hearing range.

She smiled with joy at how perfectly her plan worked as expected. Her only regret was not using it on her assailants for attacking her and killing Chanqinger the night before. Despite losing her handmaiden, she got the opportunity to meet, get up close and personal with the man of her dreams.

Putting the gold bar token into her poach, she began whistling happily on her way towards the exit.

"Take care, Lady Sumeijian," Ah Fu bid her farewell, possibly for the last time, as he escorted her out through Li Residence's main gates.

Sumeijian nodded appreciatively, recognizing Ah Fu, Madam Li, and her son Neng Yuan as the only ones who treated her with respect and acceptance, unlike the Old Master and the vexatious maid Ah Ying.

In spite of the blazing midday heat, she took a quick look at the grand Li Residence, a location that had brought her both feelings of being welcomed and a hesitance to depart. As the bright beams of the sun momentarily obscured her vision, she let out a sigh, wrestling with her unwillingness to leave.

Lost in her thoughts, she mumbled to herself, "Neng Yuan has been gone for so long. I wonder when he'll return."

Suddenly, a shadow materialized behind her, and without even looking, she sensed another presence. As she pivoted to face this mysterious figure, she found herself locking eyes with the man she had longed to see.

Li Neng Yuan.

As always, he smiled at her gently and commented, "I see you're about to leave. Let me accompany you out of the Capital City."

"To be honest," She decided to reveal part of her inner thoughts. "I felt reluctant to leave. You and your mom have been so kind to me. I now have no parents and am all alone. Looks like I must learn how to look after myself."

"Actually, you don't have to leave if you don't want to." The young master suddenly suggested to her.

Her eyes suddenly lit with delight at his words and out of curiosity, she asked, "Are you persuading me to stay? Even as a maid like Ah Ying and your other servants?"

"Yes and no." He answered, seemingly amused by her reaction. "You just lost your parents. Wherever you come from, it is quite a distance from Capital City and may not be safe for you on your way back. While I don't mind you staying at my place, I certainly don't want you to work as a maid nor servant. Because you're here with a special identity."

"Really?" She asked though she already knew the answer but still wanted to confirm with her dream guy.

"Yes. Because I am the only son and child, I can make a special request to my parents." He affirmed.

"Special request on what?" Her heart now racing fast with excitement and bumping with hope that he was in love with her like she was with him. The very thought of him proposing to her and then asking his parents to accept her as their daughter-in-law suddenly materialized in her thoughts.

"Special request to be my god sister so that instead of just me, they have another child to look after them when I'm not around."

Upon hearing those, she felt betrayed and disappointed. Because all the while she assumed that he wanted her companionship as much as she desired for his. For being his wife and his sister were two different matters as one required more of his devotion and the other as just obligation to make him and his family happy as well.

Without even thinking, she found herself expressing her disappointment: "Who wants to be your god sister? I don't know or am not even related to you!"

Her sudden reaction clearly puzzled and confused Neng Yuan.

"I thought you just said you are reluctant to leave." Neng Yuan said. "So, thinking over, I feel that is the best arrangement."

The problem was she was no longer interested to hear that statement. For she had come to the painful realization that her feelings for him were her own infatuation, let alone relationship and even friendship. Whatever she had imagined or wished for, it became painfully evident that he did not feel the same way.

"Yes, I said I felt reluctant! But I'm now changing my mind!" She retorted, a twinge of annoyance evident in her voice.

Ah Ying found herself grappling with comforting Madam Li, a task that proved to be increasingly difficult despite her best efforts in the master bedroom.

Madam Li, normally composed, patient, and tolerant, was surprisingly affected by an unknown illness which heightened the tension in the room, making every attempt to bring solace feel like a cautious maneuver around an unfamiliar affliction.

"Ah! I feel painful and itchy all over my body!" She cried out desperately. "Can you scratch my neck? No, my back! No, my chest!"

Ah Ying did exactly that, but her actions proved futile as Madam's condition became worse physically, mentally and verbally. Though she had never seen her reacting that way, she could not help wondering if Sumeijian was behind this.

"How come you keep scratching and I still feeling itchy and hot all over?" Madam asked. "The day before, Sumeijian helped to scratch my back and I recovered fast. Can you get her back please?"

"But Madam, you just send her back!" Ah Ying reminded her.

"Then get her back quickly! I need her right here right now!"

That was precisely why she immediately dashed out of the main gate only to see Sumeijian still outside with her young master who just returned from the palace.

"Young Master!" She cried out to him instinctively. "Something terrible happened to your mother!"

"What's wrong with her?" Young Master asked immediately with concerned look.

Turning now to Sumeijian reluctantly, she added, "Madam wants you back to cure her immediately! She believes only you can."

However, the young lady seemed unaffected and asked, "Want me to return? Can! Provided you don't argue with me or challenge me for anything!"

Swallowing her pride due to Madam's instructions, Ah Ying promised by saying, "No, I don't ever again. Can you please come back and help Madam? She's in terrible pain right now!"

Sumeijian smiled in what Ah Ying knew to be counter-sarcasm to hers second ago in Madam's presence before saying, "Ok, let's go then!"

As among the few possessing unique Huo Yang blowpipe and needles, crafted by the late weapons and healing master from her territory, Sumeijian knew exactly how and where to address Madam Li's condition.

Fully aware that the needle embedded in Madam's neck as source of her agony, she simply removed it carefully and slowly. Applying the healing techniques she learnt, she administered a complete body massage on Madam Li.

First focusing on her forehead, then neck, shoulders, chest, and legs. While the effects came about in twenty-four hours, the cure would only come into full effect in forty-eight hours depending on Madam's body and mental will.

Turning to Ah Ying, Neng Yuan, and even his father, who had hurried from the palace office to be by Madam's bed, Sumeijian conveyed, "I am merely providing temporary relief for her suffering. To ensure a speedy and complete recovery, it is advisable to consult a doctor for professional help and advice."

But Neng Yuan's mother refused to take her advice by saying, "I don't want any doctor nor physician! I prefer to be healed by Sumeijian."

Turning to both her husband and son, "Can you please persuade Sumeijian to stay?"

Before they could even reply, Sumeijian interrupted by repeating what she overheard Chief Advisor Li Teng Yuan telling his wife, "I'll strongly advise you get a professional physician. For I'm just an outsider with unknown background. If I stayed, I may affect and even bring your family reputation down."

"Please! Old Master!" Madam Li seemed to plead with her husband. "I can no longer stand the pain and torture. Quick please persuade Sumeijian to stay!"

"Thank you for healing my mother," Neng Yuan expressed his gratitude. "Since my mother wants you to stay, will you stay for her and my sake?"

"I agreed with my son and wife," His father Li Teng Yuan finally looked into her eyes with desperation and conceded: "I owe my wife's health to you. Can you please stay? We all need you."

Feeling jubilant over the Old Master's submission to exactly what she wanted, she agreed by responding, "Since old master wants me to stay as well, I'll definitely stay!"

As the Li family was happy with her decision, Sumeijian realized how easy it was to play villainess and heroine in just one day to stay longer with the man she was in love despite realizing her chances of marrying him were now slim.

Kai Seven, having stumbled upon the unexpected treasure, woke up the next morning with a sense of excitement.

Eager to share his discovery, his first instinct was to meet his friends at Dai Long despite his father's warnings to avoid them. Due to their financial constraints, they could only afford to sit on the ground floor this time since it was open to public. In contrast, the second floor was reserved for more affluent guests, who were treated to storytelling entertainment.

The ground floor section was designed as more of an open space, with an eclectic mix of tables and chairs that encouraged a relaxed and yet budget-friendlier atmosphere which was still lively with warmth of socializing, melodic clinking of cutlery and cups, tantalizing aromas of diverse teas and delicacies filling the space. The open layout allowed guests to enjoy a sense of freedom, and it was particularly flavored by those who preferred a casual experience while still saving on their budget.

This also happened to be where Kai managed to get shelter and see General Xue Lei and his men when the whole city was under curfew, making it easier for him to share his experiences.

His unveiling of jade treasure chest created a palpable change in the atmosphere. Like him when making his discovery, his friends were just as transfixed, their faces reflecting a mix of awe and amazement at the treasure before them.

But they were not the only ones as some of other patrons around them were also drawn into the spectacle, their interest piqued by the sudden display of the chest's contents.

Three of his four friends - Yang Ge, Cong Lang and Bai Huo - were holding one of two daggers, emerald bow and one of the seven arrows in sack bag that somehow fitted into the box together. But not the ring as Kai chose to keep and wear it for good luck.

"Wow! I still can't believe what I am seeing now!" Yang Ge withdrew the hilt and admired the shining sharp blade.

"Whoever hide these must be highly skilled in archery besides just knives." Cong Lang added as he examined the exquisite bow with curved markings upon.

However, Bai Huo was a bit apprehensive about touching the tip while holding the arrow which from Kai's perspective, was understandable as he heard tales of arrows tipped with poison to ensure its victims never recovered and die faster upon being struck upon.

"But one thing, I don't understand," his fourth friend An Qiao looked confused as he remarked. "Why will anyone want to hide these if they are so precious? If he needs money, shouldn't he just sell them at pawns shop and sell them?"

"You ask me, I ask who?" Kai gave his friend a friendly jab in shoulder with his arm. "Anyway, who cares? What matters most is I discovered these and since you are all my friends, I decided to ask you out and share all these."

"Hey Kai, since you asked us out here and shared all these treasures, this meal is on you." Yang Ge suggested with what seemed to be mischievous grin.

"Me treating all of you here today? Is this some joke?" Kai countered as he realized that even with his wallet token, it was only enough for him and two of his friends. It did not help that his father was extremely thrifty and gave him monthly allowance just enough for daily essential basics despite spending time helping in his fortune-telling business.

"Hey, today is supposed to be our rest day and time with our families," Cong argued. "Since you ask us here and share with us your precious treasure, you should treat us for breakfast with you."

Knowing his limited resources, he did his best yet what he already realized as futile attempt to defend himself by saying, "As much as I want and should, I don't have so much money. Tell you what, how about next month?"

"Please stop finding excuses for yourself!" Bai Huo added heat to fire. "That day on the second floor, you just ran out and left us all having to fork out our bills. So today, you treat us! I insist with everyone else."

"But I don't have much -" Kai was about to repeat his reason only to be interrupted by An Qiao.

"If you sell all these treasures, then you have the money!" His fourth friend - who tend to be wiser than his other three - advised. "Can't you use a bit more of your brain instead of just bragging what you have but don't have?"

"That's right!" Bai Huo agreed with An Qiao. "Moreover, on the Dai Unity festival when you were supposed to be celebrating with us, you sneaked away to see Lady Li Shi and Royal Highness without telling us! As good friends, shouldn't we be open and share with one another? Moreover, we don't even know if you are telling the truth!"

"Hey, I did see them both!" Kai stood up and counter-argued despite realizing that he was outtalked by his friends and precisely why his father perceived them as bad company and warned him to stay away from.

"I tell you what." Yang Ge suggested. "Two of us will stay here in case the innkeeper thinks we are going to run away without paying for our meals while you and Bai Huo go to pawnshop and sell this treasure. Then we all have money not just for our meals but being able to enjoy ourselves as real men!"

"Alright, if you all want me to sell, I'll sell!" Kai reluctantly conceded.

"Don't even think about walking out on us again!" Cong warned, his tone serious. "If you do, we know where to find your home."

Sticking out his tongue in playful defiance, Kai and his friend Bai Huo rose from their seats. Carefully arranging the weapons in what he believed were their original positions, Kai closed the jade treasure chest, tucking it under his arm.

Together with Bai Huo, they set out in search of the nearest pawnshop.

They were not the only ones obsessed with the treasure Kai Seven just shared.

For behind them with another table and chairs, there were three other men noticing and hearing their entire conversation and argument.

An old man wearing black tunic over his white clothing and hat, and his two rough-looking companions in their emerald-green tunics over similar attire.

Seeing the long green-haired fellow and his friend leaving the teahouse with that chest, the old man quickly rose from his seat and followed them discreetly while at the same time, blended into the surroundings, shadows and corners, keeping a watchful eye on their every move without giving away his presence.

Kai Seven and his friend Bai Huo navigated through narrow alleys, diverging from the bustling streets filled with market stalls and restaurants, and arrived at a discreet shophouse in a more secluded area.

The pawnshop turned out to be small, dwarfed by the larger, more conspicuous establishments in the city's busier districts.

Its exterior was unassuming, with a wooden frontage that had been worn down by the elements over time. Above the entrance, a weathered sign bearing the ornate Dai characters for Pawnshop hung precariously, its once-vibrant colors now muted.

Upon pushing open the creaky door, they were greeted by a dimly lit interior, the walls lined with shelves that stretched from floor to ceiling, displaying a diverse assortment of items, ranging from age-old knick-knacks to more modern oddities.

The assortment of objects in the store was varied, with each item carrying its own story of previous owners and forgotten histories. There were antiques, intricate accessories, ornate jewellery, scrolls and assortments of peculiar items displayed on the shelves. The air carried a faint scent of aged wood and dust, adding to the atmosphere of antiquity.

At the back of the shop, a burly, bearded man sat behind a counter, engrossed in counting token currencies and meticulously maintaining the shop's accounts via table keypads with monitor screen.

As they both approached him, he looked up from his work, his piercing eyes sizing up the items they brought for evaluation.

"Hi gentlemen, how can I help you?" He greeted them with a weary smile that revealed him to be clearly stressed from his ongoing tasks.

Kai and Bai looked at each other and then the treasure chest before Kai finally plucked the courage by answering, ""Sir, we'd like to sell this treasure. We're brothers, and our family is facing tough times. We need money urgently, so we decided -"

"Can I see what's inside?" The man interjected, a reminder of his authority in this transaction.

Without hesitation, Kai opened the chest, revealing its contents – a pair of emerald covered daggers, crossbow, and seven arrows.

The bearded shop owner was quick to express his admiration. "Wow, these look exquisite! I'll give you 1000 silver tokens."

Discontentment hung in the air as Bai Huo voiced their shared disappointment, "Just 1000 silver tokens only?"

Refusing to back down, the owner declared with a firm look and tone. "That's the best and final price I'm willing to pay. 1000 silver tokens. You can take it or leave with the chest. As you can see, I'm very busy right now. Also, by right, my shop is supposed to be closed for business when you two suddenly barged in."

Unable to come up with any other alternative, Kai and Bai decided to accept the payment knowing that their other friends were still waiting with their patience running thin.

The moment those two young ignorant chaps left his store, Officer Ke Duan swiftly reached under the counter desk to activate his communication link, connecting him directly to the West District commander.

He recounted the incident, providing a detailed account of what just happened. Those two baby-faced mercenaries did not really know what they did not know despite doing their awful best to look smart and cool as desperate sellers.

Though the pawnshop was his family business with his father as main owner, he also used it as a convenient cover to investigate sources of all incoming goods to be traded for money as to whether they were really owned by sellers or stolen from others.

By their appearance and way, they communicate to him, they did not look like they own this chest.

At the same time, the old man had been observing the two young men entering and exiting the pawnshop while remain hidden in the alley shadows.

Using his zoom-in scanning mobile device, he discovered that they were trying to sell the jade treasure chest and after negotiating what he perceived to be pawnshop proprietor, the two men left with a sizable amount of silver tokens.

Wasting no time, he established contact with the other two men still sitting and waiting in teahouse through the same device, affirming that the chest now being sold could be what they had been searching for.

Following their reunion with the rest of the group and settling the bill, they departed from Dai Long Teahouse and headed towards Dai En brothel.

Despite the latter not being an appropriate venue for individuals of their stature, they were unconcerned due to their recent financial gain from selling the treasure. The primary focus was now on seeking enjoyment and indulging in revelry with women, which they considered a well-deserved reward after their gains.

Dai En brothel, strategically positioned in the center of Dai Capital City, attracted a considerable number of mostly male visitors through its well-known entry and exit points even at mid-morning hours.

As guests stepped through the entrance, they were warmly received by hospitality staff who ushered them in and out of the venues with ease and efficiency.

The ground floor featured a range of designated payment areas where guests could conveniently settle their bills, enquired and booked assorted services with the staff, including waiters, waitresses, and mama-sans. This area was designed to manage transactions related to lady choices, food, entertainment, room reservations, and diverse activity packages.

The stunning artwork and visual graphics of nature, cities and famous legends adorned the walls of the second, third, and fourth floors was accessible via a spiral stairway and elevators.

The second floor featured elegant dining spaces, reserved for elite class visitors of rich and powerful merchants, high-ranking officials, commanders and ladies savouring their culinary experiences while third level comprised of recreational spaces, including private compartments and areas for dancing, singing, and light-hearted socializing.

On the fourth level, there were specially designated accommodations for private and individual experiences, providing guests with the opportunity to extend their stays.

The fifth and top-most level of the establishment was reserved solely for the esteemed owner Lady Li Shi and her deputy, Madam Huang, who used it as their private sanctum to oversee the selection, recruitment, and transaction of courtesans, catering to the refined tastes of their distinguished clientele.

As of now, Madam Huang took on the responsibility of greeting the executive and elite-class regular patrons on the ground floor as they made their way to either elevators or stairway after making their reservations well in three weeks to one month in advance along with her well-trained staff of both male waiters and female waitresses.

All was proceeding well as planned until she saw a group of unruly youths approaching her.

From their casual look and outfits, she immediately concluded that they were just low-class hooligans up to not good and obviously out to create trouble in what should be professionally run and well-managed establishment.

Kai Seven instantly recognized her as Madam Huang, the same woman he saw supervising younger women and acting as Deputy to First Lady Li Shi.

Despite not having formally introduced himself, he inferred her identity from their brief encounter, which appeared to be more than just a chance meeting.

While she was all smiles to other well-established-and-dressed guests, her face straightaway turned gloomy upon seeing him and his friends entering. Approaching Kai and his friends, Madam Huang demanded by asking, "What brings you all here?"

Before Kai could respond, one of his friends, Yang Ge, chimed in with a mischievous grin, saying, "As men coming to this place, you should be well aware of our intentions by common sense."

Maintaining her composure, she pressed on, "Then do you know what this place is?"

"What this place is?" Cong Lang echoed her words with a touch of sarcasm in his tone. "Even a kid knows. This is-"

Kai and his friends simultaneously completed his answer: "Dai En Brothel!"

Unperturbed by their synchronized response, she continued, "Since you -all know, then all the more you should be aware that this place caters only to the wealthy and influential who can afford our offers."

Upon hearing her words, his friends fell silent except for Kai. Seizing this opportunity, he flashed his silver tokens worth $1000 in value and stated, "Even though we may not be considered rich and powerful, I have these 1000 silver tokens for immediate booking.

Since I know First Lady Li Shi owns this place, could you kindly arrange her to come down? I like to ask her some questions and perhaps have her introduce a few girls to us."

However, rather than being persuaded, this only served to further irk Madam Huang. Without giving the silver tokens a look, she retorted with sarcasm by asking and commenting, "Only 1000 silver tokens? And who are you related to Lady Li Shi? Even if you bring millions of gold and platinum bars, she won't see you!"

Upon hearing her malicious words, it was Kai's turn to feel upset.

"Listen, old lady! We are here to enjoy ourselves, just like everyone else. If you have an issue with us, just say so and stop wasting our time!"

This response only fuelled Madam Huang's irritation as she retorted, "Who do you think you are, making such outrageous demands? I'll give you two minutes to leave. If not, I'll have my men throw you out the door!"

"Have we committed any crime to deserve such punishment?" Cong Lang asked.

"Moreover, we are just here to enjoy ourselves like everyone else," added Yang Ge. "Why do you have to resort to violence?"

Feeling outnumbered and outargued, the deputy called for the bodyguards through the back doors, commanding, "Guards, get these troublemakers out of here!"

Kai refused to be intimidated by these threats and neither were his friends.

"If you don't bring Lady Li Shi down, we'll keep shouting her name! Lady Li Shi!"

His friends echoed his cries. So much so that Madam Huang cried out even louder and in greater desperation despite being outnumbered, "Guards, throw them out of the door!"

Before the white-clothed bodyguards with dark trousers made their move, another female voice came out from above, adding calmness to what could be a tense atmosphere.

"Who wants to see Lady Li Shi?"

Upon hearing that soothing voice, Kai and his companions directed their attention towards the source, discovering the other woman descending the staircase.

Adorned with what looked to be an imperial-style chain-assembled crown atop her hair and a necklace gracefully draping her neck, she wore predominantly white clothing adorned with intricate pink oriental patterns. The ensemble exuded an air of elegance and grace as she came down.

Kai, having seen her before in the company of the Royal Highness, now had a clearer view of her features. His friends, however, had a more candid reaction. Yang Ge, one of his companions, immediately remarked with disappointment, "Wah, so old! She can be my mom!"

Despite her age almost looking the same as her deputy, she maintained a composed and resolute demeanour in stark contrast to her deputy who had initially encountered them.

Upon reaching down the ground floor, she approached them asking, "What do you like to see me about? East District Commander is upstairs and if you keep making noises, you will be asking for trouble."

Even with those last two sentences, she remained calm as she first came down the stairs.

Seeing her, Madam Wang and five bodyguards surrounding them, Kai - on the contrary - found himself loss at words. But still determined not to be intimidated, he countered by asking, "What's so great about East District commander? Have you heard of West District commander? If you haven't, let me tell you he is also my friend and sworn brother. If you touch me and any of my friends, I'll ask him to get even with you all!"

"What is it you like to see me about?" Lady Li Shi repeated her earlier question but with firmer tone in the way she pronounced what and about.

"Very simple! I just need to know if you were with the Royal Highness during Dai Unity Festival." Kai replied, intending to use that statement to build rapport with her before stating his and his friends' true intentions.

"Young man, I think you're drunk. I never met her. Moreover, the Highness retired early after a long journey back from the Academy." Li Shi denied, though Kai could not help but notice a subtle hint of unease in her tone.

"Me drunk?" Kai almost chuckled at her response, feeling disappointed. "Hey! Since we entered, we have not even tasted a single drop of wine or place any order! Lady Li Shi, let's cut through the pretence by telling us what transpired between you and the Highness in that boathouse during the Unity Festival."

All his friends nodded in approval upon hearing that.

In defence of her superior, Madam Huang interjected, "Lady Li Shi was not with the Highness! I can vouch for that."

Undeterred, Kai continued to taunt them, mirroring her earlier provocation, "Ah, now I remember you too! You were with the other ladies, advising them to retire early. Meanwhile, Lady Li Shi, you were with the Highness, singing and playing music to a song on the boathouse. If my memory serves me right, it had something to do with winter, year-end harvest, and fireflies. Oh, and the last verse? It goes something like destiny being beyond control!"

His friends roared with laughter as he said those.

A moment of shared glances between Lady Li Shi and Madam Huang suggested a potential acknowledgment of his account of their activities on that festival night.

Feeling even more confident now, Kai continued speaking, "Perhaps it'll be wiser to admit what happened that night. If not, I'll ask the West District commander to get even with you both!"

"Oh? Did you really know the West District commander?" Another male voice unexpectedly emerged from behind Kai and his friends.

Kai's immediate response was a confident "Of course, I do!"

But upon turning and facing two familiar men standing before him - a burly, bearded pawnshop owner and young man with blue-raven hair, who Kai recognized as his recent fortune-telling customer, fear suddenly gripped him. In a hasty attempt to backtrack, Kai turned back and denied any familiarity with the young man, quickly insisting, "No, no, no! I don't know him at all!"

Unaffected by Kai's denial, the young man approached and looked at him face-to-face with a determined expression, insisting, "Whether you know him or not, you are coming with me. Because this pawnshop uncle here accused you of stealing and selling weapons for personal gains."

The magistrate's subordinate court jail is not a place you or anyone else wants to be in, even though its conditions have improved at time of reading this.

Because during Yuexin System era, it was not that way.

For the atmosphere within was dim, with only side wall torchlights to illuminate only certain parts of otherwise dark areas. Those flickering lights casted eerie shadows on the cold and damp walls, creating an unsettling ambiance that adds to the misery of the incarcerated.

In that grim setting, Kai Seven and his friends were interrogated by the young man, ironically turning out to be West District commander, severely: "How and where did you obtain this jade chest of weapons from? Tell me now!"

"This has nothing to do with Kai!" Yang Ge attempted to cover for him since the latter had only his single father and god sister to look after while they were all having normal families and lives. "We found those and happened to share with one another! If you want to punish us, punish us instead!"

"Very well then." The young commander obliged. "Since you had friends to cover for you, I'll grant their wishes first. Guards, take them out for 30 strokes of prank!"

Upon his command, four Imperial Dai police enforcers appeared and escorted all four of them out of the interrogation chamber.

Facing his friends with a mix of anxiety and desperation, Kai urged, "Please convey my condolences to my father and god-sister!" He sensed that his fate might be even bleaker than theirs, being perceived as the gang leader who led them into trouble.

Left alone in the chamber with just West District commander, the latter reiterated his question, asking, "Let me ask you again. How and where did you acquire these weapons?"

Glancing at the emerald-hilted daggers, crossbow, and seven arrows neatly arranged in the small sack within the jade treasure chest, the commander remarked, "Judging by their appearance, these don't seem like Dai military weapons. If they're not from the Dai Dynasty, they are obviously from Shibeibu Empire! Even as Dai civilian, you should be aware that possession of enemy weapons carries a death penalty."

"I happened to find them by chance." Kai stuttered, the chili leaving his senses and mobility compromised.

"Really?" His interrogator remained unconvinced. "Despite Dai Capital City flourishing, I find it hard to believe that treasures are lying everywhere and waiting to be found by any chance!"

Approaching and crouching down to meet Kai at eye level, he pressed on, "Let me ask you for the third and final time. How and where did you acquire these weapons?"

"Ok…ok," Kai's chattering mouth struggled to convey his explanation while he fought to maintain composure. "I… tell you but even if I do, you may not believe me."

"Go on and speak. I'm listening." The commander conveyed not just through words but also with his tone and body language that he meant business.

"Two days ago, "Kai did his best to recall while still being able to relate in normal frame of mind. "I saw General Xue Lei being escorted back here by Imperial convoy when suddenly, they were attacked by his comrades Zhan Bao and Kang Jie.

It seemed they were attempting to rescue their commander, believing there was a plot to silence them all on the way back."

Before he could delve further into the details, the commander accused him of fabricating tales: "You're lying!"

"No, I'm telling you the honest truth," Kai protested, fully aware of the skepticism he was facing. "It's true."

"No, you're lying!" The interrogator insisted vehemently.

This is the other side of Li Neng Yuan.

In complete contrast to the one he showed before Sumeijian and his family.

His skepticism regarding the green-haired young man is quite apparent, grounded in the fact that he met General Xue in person at the homecoming banquet, an event planned for the General and Royal Highness.

Though he did not engage in any conversation with General Xue himself, his father did briefly and mentioned, General Xue was exhausted and needed an early rest.

Even with recent news of his arrest coming from Highness this morning, he had not seen nor meet any of his mentioned comrades. Moreover, there was no official report of any attack on the Imperial convoy from her, the Majesty nor any of his officials and commanders.

As West District commander and major, it is his duty, job and responsibility to uphold the principles and values of Dai laws in where he is designated to take charge. Therefore, he acts on concrete evidence, facts and witnesses presented before him and not simply out of emotions.

The green-haired fellow - being questioned - clearly could not provide any of those to support his claims - even when sharing his side of the story.

And now, his friends, also his only witnesses in this moment, are just as guilty.

"No, I assure you, I'm telling the complete truth!" he insisted stubbornly, obviously, driven by desperation. "When General Xue refused to turn back, one of his men, Zhan Bao, took his own life. Kang Jie, his partner, had to carry him on his back, and I helped him bury Zhan Bao in Qing Tao Hills, just a few kilometres away from the Capital City. I even provided him with a shovel to make the process easier.

While digging a hole to bury Zhan Bao, Kang Jie accidentally found this treasure chest by chance. After burial, I wanted to return to him, but he signalled that he had no use for it and I should be the one keeping it instead!"

Though still sceptical due to their previous encounter where the young man clearly masqueraded as a fortune teller in his more knowledgeable father's absence, Neng Yuan could not dismiss General Xue's arrest lightly since this was confirmed by the Highness.

After thinking for a while, he addressed the young man, who seemed close in age, saying, "Although I don't know you well, having met only three times, including this occasion, I decided to give you the benefit of doubt for now. Not because your story holds water, but because General Xue's arrest has been confirmed by Highness herself."

Upon hearing those, the green-haired young man looked up with relief, asking, "Does that mean I'm innocent, and you'll let me go?"

"No, you're not and still can't leave." Neng Yuan maintained his impartial stance. "While the truth of your story remains uncertain, the fact that you openly insulted the Highness with false allegations is clearly unforgivable. This is a major offence that carries life sentence, with or without a trial, at her discretion."

Staring intently into the man's green eyes and maintaining a low tone, Neng Yuan pressed the question once more, "So, on the night of Dai Unity Festival, did you really see Royal Highness and Lady Li Shi together at Dai En brothel?"

The young man nodded in affirmation, "Yes, that is absolutely true.".

Raised eyebrows and a sceptical gaze met this response. "Absolutely true?" Neng Yuan questioned with narrowed eyes. "If that is the case, I can't help you. Guards!"

Panicking, the young man swiftly retracted his statement, pleading, "No, no, no, that's not true! I didn't see anyone that night. I and my friends were just drunk and talking nonsense!"

Asserting his earlier statement, Neng Yuan insisted, "No. What you just told me is true. So you left me no choice but to escort you directly to Royal Highness for further questioning. Guards!"

Desperate to recant his words, the young man lamented, "No, no, no, I was just uttering nonsense! I didn't see anybody, just my friends!"

"You totally confused me, young man." Neng Yuan maintained his stance. "At Dai En brothel moments ago, you keep insisting that you saw the Highness with Lady Li Shi. Yet now, you claim you didn't see them. So, which one is true? Speak now!"

The green-haired man appeared at a loss for words.

"My patience is now wearing thin! Either you confess now or explain to the Highness later in Imperial Courts!"

"I... I never saw anybody except my friends with whom I drank too much and got drunk," the young man struggled to articulate.

"Are you sure? That you didn't see anyone except your inebriated friends during Dai Unity Festival night?" Neng Yuan pressed.

He nodded, perhaps as a final, desperate plea.

"In that case, I believe you for now. But if I ever catch you and your friends causing trouble at Dai En brothel or any place I happen to be in or find out, I won't be as lenient as I am now."

Approaching the magistrate's jail table, Neng Yuan retrieved the jade treasure chest and handed it to the young man. "I'll let you keep these for now. However, if I discover that these belong to someone else and you were lying, I'll summon you back here for good. You may go now!"

Kai Seven experienced a sense of deliverance.

Freed from the overbearing scrutiny of the commander's probing inquiry, a man about his age and height but wielded greater status and authority throughout the proceedings.

Yet the very thought of being set up by the pawnshop keeper - who happened to be one of West District commander's men - placed a heavy burden upon his shoulders and chest when holding the jade treasure chest. It did not help that the commander's last two sentences renewed his worries as someone else could have hidden the chest and probably searching desperately now. If so, he might end up being back here forever.

So, he said, "West Distinct commander, since you have greater authority and are a man of higher status, I suggest you keep these yourself."

He held up the chest as he finished his words.

"No." The commander held up his hand as firm rejection. "Since you told me you found it and Kang Jie clearly handed to you after digging the hole to bury his comrade, you're now the rightful owner. Safeguard them well as I don't think they are worth only 1000 silver tokens."

"Thank you, West Distinct commander!" Kai expressed his gratitude more out of desperation than sincerity. "I hope despite all these, we can be friends and even sworn brothers. If you ever need my help, I'll be glad to be of service to you and your family."

"May I suggest that you don't ever use this incident to build rapport with me? For your innocence is not proven completely yet. Moreover, I have more than enough manpower in my command chain and my family is doing well. So, I do not need anything else from you other than complete truth I want to hear. Leave now before I change my mind later!"

Kai Seven stood up quickly after hearing the words, his movements driven by a mix of relief and urgency.

With two law enforcers by his side, he left the subordinate court jail, his mind on to just return home and be reunited with his loved ones.

As he walked away from the confinement, the weight of his recent experiences gradually lifted, and the prospect of a homecoming provided comfort amidst the remaining uncertainties.

As Li Neng Yuan prepared to depart as well with his subordinates, De Jie, another member of his team, entered the interrogation chamber with an urgent message.

"Commander Li Neng Yuan," De Jie respectfully greeted him before getting to his points. "As you instructed, we have conducted a thorough examination of two bodies we found two days ago."

Neng Yuan, his expression reflecting concern, inquired, "How is it?"

"The first is a middle-aged man called You Lin who happened to be one of Dai Chang Inn assistants. On his way to do usual housekeeping, he was apparently ambushed and hurled by a group of four men from the rooftop. Exactly who those men were and why they killed him, we're still investigating.

But from what we know in terms of his family, he leaves behind his wife, mother and a son but no daughters."

"And the second?"

"The second victim turns out to be a woman in men's clothes. She died from back stab wounds during the Unity Festival. We found out her name is Chanqinger from her identity card.

Also, she is not from Capital City nor surrounding territories within Dai Dynasty, but rather from Shibeibu Empire. It is interesting to note that her clothing is the same as the girl, Sumeijian, whom you recently rescued and brought home.

While Sumeijian claims to be You Lin's daughter, we have reasons to believe there might be a connection between her and Chanqinger instead because of their identical clothing."

"Could they be both from Shibeibu Empire?" Neng Yuan enquired. "If so, most likely they came here as espionage spies."

"At this point, we have reasons only to suspect, not make any conclusions as our investigations are still ongoing while I report these developments to you."

"Thank you for your information, De Jie," Neng Yuan said. "Let me know when you uncover more clues and evidence."

"As you instructed." His man obliged before leaving the chamber.

As he made his way home with his remaining men and servants, he began wondering who exactly Sumeijian was, what her motives really were and most importantly, why she lied to him and his mother about her father.

Whatever the reasons, he was determined to get to the bottom of this. But for now, since he and his mother wanted her to continue staying after she healed his mother from a strange illness that had never happened before, he decided to keep his word and not to pursue this matter for now.

As a commander and even as only child, he would only act upon obtaining sufficient evidence and witnesses to affirm his suspicions at appropriate time.

Despite feeling hungry, the old man had been waiting, observing, hiding within the shadows for the whole day.

From the moment he saw the young green-haired man sharing with his friends about the jade treasure chest he found, selling that chest in pawnshop for profits, him heading towards Dai En brothel before being seized by West District commander and his men for what he suspected to be true, he had never left them out of his sights despite remaining unseen by them.

As the young man emerged from the magistrate subordinate court, still in possession of the jade treasure chest, the old man immediately felt a sense of relief.

Activating his mobile communication link, he quickly informed his associates: "I've spotted him after his release from the magistrate subordinate court. He's still holding onto the jade treasure chest, despite having sold it to the pawnshop earlier."

"Shall we make our move now?" One of them inquired.

"Not yet." He replied. "I'll inform you when the time is right. Right now, I'm hungry. If you're still at Dai Long Teahouse, I join you shortly."

After their release, Kai Seven's four friends - Yang Ge, Cong Lang, Bai Huo, and An Qiao - immediately headed to Qing Tao Hills to share the unfortunate news with his family.

The weight of the situation weighed heavily on their minds and shoulders as they prepared to deliver the troubling news about Kai, who was now accused of being the instigator of the predicament they found themselves in.

As expected, his father, the famous fortune teller De Qi, took the news the hardest. He cried out by muttering to himself, "Son, I've constantly reminded you to stay out of trouble, but you just won't listen! Now that you put yourself in such a fix, even I cannot help you anymore!"

His god sister Yin Er remained silent even though her eyes were full of tears.

Then out of the blue, the father turned to and began accusing them, "It must be you all coming up with this brothel idea that got my son into trouble!"

"Hey uncle, it's your son who asked us out in the first place! We're just as concerned for him as you. That's why we're here to inform you the news!" Yang Ge argued.

Then Yin Er spoke," At this point, there is only one way to save him. Since I'm working for the Highness, I'll inform her, hoping that she can persuade the Majesty and relevant authorities to lighten the punishment and hopefully free him. I do that first thing tomorrow."

Unable to come up with any other alternative, they all agreed silently.

Just then, the door sprang opened and in entered Kai Seven.

"Why're you all looking so sad?" He asked with his usual mischievous grin. "I'm only away for just few hours and all of you began to miss me."

While everyone was delighted, his father switched into his usual lecture mode by demanding him to stay, learn and help in his fortune-telling shop and not allowed to venture on his own or with his friends anymore without his permission.

Though his friends protested initially, they saw no point in arguing further as what mattered most was Kai Seven had returned safe and sound after going through a day of challenges and trials.

"Now that the news about General Xue Lei's arrest come directly from Royal Highness, I fear the worst for him."

Chief Advisor Li Teng Yuan said this upon being informed by his son Neng Yuan what had happened beginning with his unexpected summon by her to interrogations of certain troublemakers who claimed that they knew about Xue Lei, his men and got the treasure chest from a moment ago.

They were now in his study chamber which exuded an air of authority and intellectual prowess, befitting his role as a government official, minister, and former province magistrate.

The room was meticulously organized, with tasteful yet functional furnishings that reflect the dignity of his position. The walls are adorned with rich wooden panelling, providing the space a sense of warmth and sophistication.

At the heart of the room stood a large and ornate wooden desk with lamp disks, its surface cluttered with neatly arranged stacks of documents, inkwells and quills. The desk served as the personal command center for his administrative and research duties. A finely crafted leather chair, adorned with the Dai Dynasty unicorn emblem, was where he usually sat behind the desk, signalling his authority and experience within the Imperial Royal Circle.

It also boasted extensive bookshelves lining the walls, showcasing his commitment to knowledge and governance. They comprised of impressive collections of books on laws, history, and cultural heritage of Dai Dynasty. Legal tomes detailing the intricacies of Capital City, surrounding provinces, states and territories shared space with historical accounts of past rulers and governors, providing him with a wealth of information to draw upon in his advisory role.

Even though he and his son were at home, they decided to discuss these matters in his study chamber as they were not relevant to their home affairs even though they concerned their kingdom.

"Father, in your years of governance even as magistrate, have you come across cases like this?" his son asked.

"Not that I know of." He replied. "But if what the Highness said about Premier Hu's next move is true, then we need to act accordingly. Because at this moment, they are in the light controlling the proceedings while we remain in the dark."

"No matter what, General Xue Lei has been our hero and best hope against our Shibeibu foes." Neng Yuan reminded him. "For without him, our Dynasty will not stand any chance and we probably won't even be here talking. So, no matter what, we must save him from Premier Hu's treachery!"

Teng Yuan nodded while pondering over the chancellor's next possible move and how he should react even as Chief Advisor.
