Chapter 10 - 8 - Master And Apprentice

Bands of sweat streamed down his exposed back, drenchinghim as he relentlessly sawed and sliced thick tree trunks into smaller and manageable logs.

The repetitive task continued as he in turn cut and assembled those logs into tables and stools which took up additional time.

Despite the vigorous work, his movements were severely restricted by chains binding his arms and legs. This had been his daily routine with an hour of rest nestled between six to eight hours of labour with sleep from late night to early dawn.

All these within the pine tree forest on the outskirts of Jiang Manor.

Still for the past three months, he had become accustomed to the constant grueling and unyielding labor. Despite its severity, the punishment was a far cry from a life-threatening scenario imposed by Imperial Courts, offering a sliver of comfort in his otherwise bleak predicament.

As the sun began to set, his natural surroundings were suddenly interrupted by roaring engines above. Looking up, he saw the hovercraft descending from the sky, its sleek blue and white design glinting even in the fading daylight. It stopped gently before him, prompting a mix of surprise and curiosity about the unexpected visitor's intentions.

The top sky-blue bubble lifted. Out came the servant Cai Kun and familiar figure whom he had regarded as his father, guardian and master from childhood. Even in nightfall, he could recognize his face and been accustomed to regularly.

"Chi Feng!" Master Zhang called out to his disciple as he and servant Cai Kun approached him.

Knowing his disciple had worked very hard throughout day and night and was certainly hungry by now, he made a special request to the latter to save portions of all dishes - served during Madam Jiang's birthday dinner - to be packed into the small meal box specially for him.

Cai Kun obliged by covering the box with the cloth as well to protect the food from being contaminated and even polluted by searing dust that emanated from the tree trucks sand wood pieces that his disciple had sawed and cut.

"Has the work been tough upon you?" Master Zhang asked with a gentle smile and concerned look.

Putting aside his tools to face his master, Chi Feng could only nod his head as his vocal cords were temporarily paralyzed by the potent Ya She poison as additional punishment coinciding with his scheduled manual labour sentence.

Although the conditions were demanding and the work intense, he considered it a relatively lenient sentence compared to capital punishment by Imperial Courts.

"How many more chairs and tables to go?" Master Zhang inquired, again with the same expression.

He raised his left hand with palm open with five fingers extended.

"Fifty more?" Master Zhang questioned.

He immediately nodded.

"Chi Feng," Master Zhang addressed him now in a stern yet wise demeanour before continuing, "From young, I have always taught you to be in control of your thoughts, emotions, and actions, regardless of who you meet and how others treat you.

Yes, I understand your intention to uphold justice by saving that girl from rape, but resorting to violence and nearly killing her assailant is totally uncalled for. There are other ways to resolve such matters. No matter what, beating up and killing someone is wrong.

I am also aware that the punishment Madam Jiang placed upon you is severe, but it is for your own good. The fact that she looked after you in my absence and even pleaded with local authorities not to impose a harsher sentence is already considered lenient."

Chi Feng took a moment to ponder and absorb his mentor's words.

"Besides bringing you dinner and sharing this, there's something else I must tell you." Master Zhang began to reveal his visit's true purpose. "Madam Jiang has entrusted me with a mission to Dai Capital City. Do you know why?"

Chi Feng shook his head.

Master Zhang leaned in, disclosing with his firm look, "To save her son and my disciple, General Xue Lei."

This revelation shocked Chi Feng, as like others, he knew General Xue Lei not only as a well-respected commander but a hero, saviour and senior disciple under his master, being more experienced and older than himself.

"In what looked like an invitation to homecoming banquet for him and Royal Highness, General Xue has been falsely accused and by now sentenced to imprisonment for crimes he didn't commit shortly. I learned this from one of his men, Kang Jie, who barely made it back alive after being captured by our enemies and then released, only to face betrayal from our own Dai troops."

With a focused gaze on Chi Feng, Master Zhang continued: "Chi Feng, I like to bring you along. Old Madam has given her approval but laid down three conditions for release."

Chi Feng nodded in acknowledgment.

"One, refrain from meddling in others' affairs, regardless of gender.

Second, do not respond if you face humiliation or insult.

And third, do not retaliate even if you are severely beaten."

At the mention of the last condition, Chi Feng's expression turned sombre.

"If you cannot adhere to any or all of these conditions, I won't bring you along." Master Zhang's look remained firm upon laying down those conditions.

After a moment of contemplation, Chi Feng nodded again.

Master Zhang returned to his warm smile, saying, "I'm sure you must be hungry now. That's why I've asked the servants to set aside portions of the food served during Madam's 80th birthday for you. Come, let's eat first. Afterward, head back, take a shower and pack your things. We have a long road ahead."

They all moved to one table, placed three seats, and Chi Feng finally sat down to eat after working non-stop for whole day.

As the gentle morning light crept over the horizon, the skies remained shrouded in shadows, and the surroundings of Jiang Manor were enveloped in a peaceful silence.

A sudden commotion disturbed the peaceful atmosphere as flocks of cawing crows, harbingers of unknown occurrences, filled the sky with their ear-piercing calls. Their dark winged forms zigzagged through the murky sky, circling round Jiang Manor Pavilion Hall.

Although not as large as the one in majestic Dai Palace, this place had its own charm. Situated on the southern edge of the estate, it stood proudly facing the dense forest where Chi Feng had been toiling to make furniture out of pine wood for past three months.

In between south and north was an impressive arched bridge that spanned 10 kilometres over the calm waters of the Jiang He reservoir, offering a captivating path to the splendour that lay inside. The tranquil atmosphere, illuminated by the gentle glow of the early morning light, hinted at the importance of what was to happen in the Pavilion Hall.

Despite being urged by Madam Jiang to rest longer in her bedroom while she slept in guests' room instead, Kang Jie decided not to impose further burden on her.

Grappling with a profound sense of guilt, he strongly felt he had let down Madam Jiang and her family by failing to save her son and his commander, when it mattered most. Despite having slept for six hours, he felt it was more than enough, even though he had not eaten anything so far. While most family members were still asleep, he was already awake.

Truth being said, this was not his first time at Jiang Manor.

Years ago, he had accompanied Xue Lei and Zhan Bao to a family meeting where the commander's father and brothers were still alive, discussing national and military matters on the fourth storey. Xue Lei wanted them to experience the command dynamic within a family where most male siblings were in extended military service and how they made decisions that affected the nation.

Now, he found himself alone.

Adjacent to the Pavilion Hall was a small circular temple shrine where he already paid respects to Divine Gods, his commander's father and brothers who died in defending the First Capital City against Shibeibu invaders. Unable to change the past, Kang Jie sought solace through prayer, hoping to offer peace to the departed souls before joining them.

When Master Zhang and his apprentice arrived at official sunrise, Kang Jie had already completed most of his morning routines.

While the former was still entirely in his grey garments and robes, Chi Feng now wore a complete white outfit with standard red tunic and boots.

According to the Dai culture, red represented wealth and courage, which suited Chi Feng well as he was born in the year of the Celestial Red Dragon.

Having noticed their arrival, the servants had arranged their breakfast of buns, cakes and tea to be served to all three individuals at the Pavilion Hall. According to them, Old Madam Jiang decided to let them tend to their matters without offering her usual hospitality, which she normally did to her other guests.

"Kang Jie," Master Zhang addressed him as they shared what might be their first and last meal of the day together. "You haven't fully recovered from fatigue and need more rest. There's no need to trouble yourself to come here and send us off."

"No, Master Zhang," Kang Jie insisted on fulfilling his duty. "I must. Old Madam Jiang is my commander's mother, and you are his master. By failing to save him, I've failed you both. That is the best I can do to make amends."

"Please do not blame yourself. You did everything you could." Master Zhang offered his comfort words.

"Having been with Xue Lei and his men, whom I regarded as commander, friends and sworn brothers for years, my journey has now come to an end. But yours has only just begun. There is one last thing I must tell you."

"Feel free to speak your mind." Master Zhang granted him permission.

"For reasons only known to himself, General Xue Lei refused to let anyone save him. So even if you tried through legal means, he would refuse.

"That is one way. The other is to mount an attack on the dungeon, overcome the guards, and escort him to somewhere safe. If you manage to do that, it will be great, as he will be able to gather most of his supporters to overcome Premier Hu and his treacherous Royal Imperial Circle, and most importantly clear his name in front of Majesty."

"Xue Lei is not just your commander but my disciple and godson as well having trained and formed a special relationship with him for years. So, no matter what, even it means sacrificing my own life, I will rescue him. That you have my word." Master Zhang declared, his voice filled with conviction and duty.

"In that case, let me give you and your disciple a toast."

All three of them raised up their cups and drank the Jiang Zhou herbal tea upon having their fill of breakfast. After which, Master Zhang and Chi Feng bid him farewell and three of them parted ways at Pavilion's main entrance.

Alone again after their departure, Kang Jie had one final task.

He made his way to the arch-bridge before praying to his late comrade Zhan Bao and all those he considered brothers and friends who had perished in the tragic Mount Chongan Battle.

With tears still streaming down his face, he muttered, "Though we were born in different years and dates, we will be united again on the other side."

After expressing his sentiments, he climbed and stood on the bridge edge before leaping into the depths of the Jiang He reservoir.

As the sun set upon the manor, a chilling discovery was made by two of the servants who were in absolute shock upon seeing Kang Jie's drowned body, floating on reservoir's murky waters.

So were Madam Jiang Xue Niang and her family members.

Despite their best efforts to revive him, including getting the best physician, it was already too late.

Amidst the busy streets of Dai Capital City, another commotion unfolded at a jewellery store where an audacious robbery took place.

The perpetrators - five armed and masked individuals - faced off against the store owner and an assistant who happened to be present during the heist. Realizing that they would soon be apprehended, they split into smaller groups to flee quickly.

While the first pair of three successfully evaded their pursuers, the other was not so fortunate. One robber got pinned down by the assistant's strength and agility, while the other was relentlessly chased by the store owner, who was determined to catch him.

Coincidentally, Master Zhang and his apprentice, Chi Feng, happened to be in the vicinity where the chase took place. Sensing the latter's inclination to intervene, Master Zhang gestured with a subtle hand movement, indicating that he should hold back.

With lightning speed, he released an immobilization needle at the escaping criminal, successfully rendering him immobile. Seizing the opportunity, the irate shop owner delivered a series of tight slaps, expressing his anger and disdain for the foiled robbery attempt.

As they resumed their journey, leaving behind a valuable lesson. Master Zhang explained, emphasizing the power of nonviolent resolutions in the face of chaos: "Everything can be resolved without using force nor violence."

The journey from Jiang Chou to Capital City spanned an hour and a half, a comfortable voyage facilitated by the courtesy of Madam Jiang Xue Niang and her diligent servant. The hovercraft smoothly traversed the distance, providing them with ample time to contemplate the imminent experience awaiting them in the capital.

As they reached the bustling Capital City's main entrance gates, it performed a U-turn, indicating the end of its role in their journey. After its departure, they were standing at the city's threshold, eager to immerse themselves in the lively atmosphere of the metropolitan center.

With security clearances in hand, they navigated the entrance gates and officially entered the Capital City. The transition from the tranquil journey to the dynamic cityscape marked the beginning of their exploration. Setting out on foot, they embraced the opportunity to unravel the mysteries and marvels hidden within the lively surroundings of the capital.

Unknown to Master Zhang and Chi Feng, a watchful monk, clad in tranquil sky-blue robes and carrying a wooden staff, observed their every move.

Despite his outward semblance of tranquility, his features, marked by thick black eyebrows and beard, bore a strong and focused expression. As he observed the pair moving through the urban area, his narrowed and intense gaze reflected a sense of recognition.

The monk wasted no time in intervening as the motionless robber was being subjected to the wrath of the shop owner. Approaching with purpose, he seized the shop owner's slapping hand and administered a hard twist, compelling him to recoil in pain and retreat with a stern directive.

Next, he shifted his attention to the immobilized robber. With calculated jabs on his arm and lower body joints, the monk dispelled the immobilization effects. When the robber returned to his normal state, the monk delivered his own series of firm slaps to all him and subsequently, his other three perpetrators who had aligned themselves with the Shibeibu commander in the secluded back alley of the Dai Chang An inn cavern.

In public, he resembled any monk to others but in truth and to his men, he was their commander General Tetsuban who was among those involved in brutal First Dai Capital invasion. Those armed robbers - also responsible for killing Chanqinger and silencing one of the inn assistants - were among his men he handpicked on this mission.

But having come this far, he began to regret his decision as the progress so far proved them to be more of liability.

As for himself, he managed to silence an unfortunate monk making his way to Dai Pyramid Temple Shrine at nightfall before taking over his robes and putting an artificial flesh-colored patch over his head to look bald in appearance.

"You scoundrels! Did King Monarch Zengis command you to engage in such deeds?" He shouted at them, aware that their surroundings provided a veil of secrecy for their conversation.

Ankelan, adorned in an orange tunic, responded, "We're strapped for cash. That's why we resorted to robbery."

His answer only provoked another resounding slap from their commander, who cursed, "Our goal is the entire Dai Dynasty! Not merely targeting one or two jewellery shops!"

Langyuewei, donned in a blue tunic, chimed in, "We haven't completed the mission assigned by King Monarch Zengis. That's why we can't risk returning, fearing punishment. But after spending days here, we're running out of money and haven't eaten for days. So, we decided to resort to robbery."

Thinking about what he just observed, General Tetsuban concluded: "Those two individuals I saw must be highly skilled in martial arts. The one deploying the immobilization needle is obviously the master. Nonetheless, no matter how formidable they are, they won't escape my clutches." He emphasized his determination by clenching his fist.

The red tunic leader Hongshimu gave a shrug on to Langyuewei with blue who nodded and all four of them echoed, "From now on, we shall only listen and act upon your orders!"

Though not entirely convinced especially with the yellow tunic accomplice now apprehended by the shop assistant, Tetsuban nodded as those four men were now all he had at his disposal and at very worst, he would have to do everything himself and be accountable to the king personally.

"General, we did not have any meal for days." pleaded Guangxionggui, attired in a green tunic.

Sensing the legitimate plea and understanding the importance of his men's well-being for mission, Tetsuban relented, "Come with me then."

Today was a bad day for Goldsmith Lu Wei Liang.

It started with the brazen robbery of his shop, where he and his assistant Kan Sun Yong were held at gunpoint by five masked and armed criminals in broad daylight. Though they were outnumbered and helpless initially, the situation took a turn when the robbers decided to split into two groups during their escape, allowing him and Sun Yong to pursue and apprehend two of them separately.

While Sun Yong easily brought down one and dragged him to the Western District Subordinate Court House by now, he had a more torrid time. His pursuit of the robber was unexpectedly cut short when the latter inexplicably froze in place. But as he tried to teach a robber a lesson, a mysterious monk appeared and vigorously seized and twisted his hand to stop him from slapping his face further. The monk's reasons for his intervention in what looked to be both ways remained a mystery.

While still nursing his injured hand, he suddenly found himself getting soaked by a torrent of water. Looking up, he saw two women standing on a balcony above him, pouring buckets of water down. Indignant, he shouted, "Hey, can't you see before pouring?"

One of the women fired back, "You're the one who doesn't pay attention to where you're going!"

Master Zhang shook his head in dismay as he and his apprentice, Chi Feng, observed the aftermath of an incident that, although not directly involving them, had casted a shadow over what should be a thriving and secure Capital City.

"The Majesty and the Imperial Royal Circle seem to have forgotten their duty to care for the people. They've grown complacent, basking in the fruits of our predecessors' labour, proclaiming peace while neglecting the values and principles once imparted by the late Emperor Dai Ci and his family." He remarked to Chi Feng, his mind still fixed on the incident moments ago.

Continuing their walk past rows of shophouses with gleaming tower office buildings and apartments behind them, he continued, "General Xue Lei is a shining example of those who upheld those.

Chi Er, even though you were just a boy when he went into battle and you never met him, he was still your senior disciple. Learn from his example and strive to be better."

Chi Feng silently nodded, still unable to speak.

With a grave tone, he added, "His arrest and imprisonment mean that Premier Hu and Imperial Royal Circle won't spare anyone connected to him, including his family, you, and me. We must proceed with caution from now on."

Chi Er was the alternate address for Chi Feng, used by Master Zhang, who had raised him as both a mentor and father after finding him abandoned as an infant in basket at his doorstep. The actual circumstances surrounding Chi Feng's abandonment remained a mystery, but Master Zhang was certain that being his adopted father and mentor required a stricter upbringing as compared to other parents on their children.

In that moment, his attention was captured by a stall showcasing needle balls which to him, stood out from other vendors. Intrigued, he approached the vendor and inquired, "How much does one needle ball cost?"

"Five bronze tokens for each ball." The stall owner responded, presenting a vibrant red one for closer inspection.

Master Zhang, without hesitation, retrieved his token card from his wrist pouch, allowing the owner to scan it. With immediate approval, he acquired the red needle ball and handed it to Chi Feng.

"Chi Feng," he addressed his apprentice in serious tone, "Your temperament has not been good. Remember, whenever you feel upset or angry, just grasp this ball tightly. The needles inside, though painful, will serve as a reminder and importance of endurance."

Once again, his apprentice nodded in silence.

"Are you hungry now?" Master Zhang inquired with a smile. "Let's head down for lunch."

In contrast to the grandeur of Dai Long Teahouse, Dai Feng Food Paradise, nestled also within the vibrant heart of the Capital City, still presented itself as a quaint and compact dining haven.

The establishment, distinguished by its modest size, stood as a single-storey structure, radiating a distinct charm that drew visitors seeking a more intimate dining experience.

Despite its smaller footprint, it embraced a unique character, offering patrons a cozy refuge where they could relish traditional Dai cuisine in an environment that prioritized warmth, a sense of community and distinctive charm through its exterior structure.

The façade was adorned with traditional Dai architectural elements, featuring intricate wooden carvings and vibrant hues that hinted at the rich culinary experience within. The entrance, framed by ornate patterns, welcomed patrons into an ambiance that blended the historical with the contemporary.

Upon crossing the threshold, the interior unfolded into a cozy dining space that encapsulated the essence of Dai culture. Stools and tables, well- arranged to maximize the available space, provided an intimate setting for diners. The decor echoed Dai aesthetics, with subtle nods to the region's cultural heritage in the form of tasteful artwork and artifacts adorning the walls.

The atmosphere was alive with the hum of conversations and the clinking of cutlery, creating a convivial backdrop for the gastronomic journey.

Customers, seated comfortably at the tables, immersed themselves in the culinary delights prepared by chefs. The cutlery, meticulously arranged, reflected the attention to detail the establishment invested in ensuring a delightful dining experience.

The waiters, clad in traditional Dai attire, gracefully moved through the space, taking orders with a warm demeanour and serving an array of delectable dishes and refreshing beverages. The synergy between the well-designed interior, attentive service, and the sumptuous fare transformed Dai Feng Food Paradise into a haven for those seeking not just a meal but an authentic cultural escapade.

Master Zhang's financial constraints were apparent, and the eating place he decided were in line with his modest budget. But it was of little concern to him, as his focus was unwaveringly fixed on the paramount objective of rescuing Xue Lei.

Earlier Madam Jiang, recognizing the financial strain of such a journey, generously offered additional funds to cover Master Zhang's expenses. However, his response reflected a depth of conviction and prioritization that transcended monetary concerns. Politely declining the offered financial support, he expressed that the rescue mission held a significance that far outweighed any compensation.

Upon entering the doorway, one waiter approached them, asking: "Sir, what do you like to have for meal?"

As this was not his first time in this place within Capital City, he knew most main dishes served since that used to be where he used to hang out with fellow Dai Academy instructors years ago. Even so, the menu did not change much. While others needed to look at the menu, he instinctively replied what went into his head: "Two plates of braised vegetables, two bowls of rice and one jug of red wine with two teacups."

The waiter nodded and headed to the kitchen area, echoing his answers to the cooking chefs within.

Tetsuban and his men were already there.

Even though his comrades were clad in dark attire with vibrant tunics, and he himself remained garbed as a monk, they went unnoticed despite the disturbances they had caused recently.

As Ankelan continued enjoying his meal of rice and braised tofu, he proposed, "If we are unable to accomplish it through conventional means, I recommend using brutal force."

"I concur with Ankelan." Hongshimu conveyed his agreement while drinking his red wine. "Currently, she remains in the Li's residence, which I believe to be under tight security."

However, Tetsuban had lost interest and stopped listening to them since they let him down repeatedly. As they sat there with full stomachs, their conversations became more relaxed. However, his focus shifted to an elderly person wearing grey robes and what looks to be his disciple wearing a red tunic over his seemingly white clothes.

His expression brightened as he laid eyes on a face he knew well, one that recalled an unpleasant encounter years ago that left them both with a lasting impression.

Upon seeing his face and meeting his gaze, Master Zhang immediately recognized him.

For he was the one who injured his right leg that left him almost crippled and unable to continue his job as Dai Academy instructor. It was not an incident he was proud to share or even think about. Because of all the combatants he faced before, the Shibeibu commander remained his toughest opponent and nemesis.

How they met was during the Jiang Zhou confrontations. Unlike the ones his disciple General Xue Lei were involved, those were not major wars or even full-scale battles but a rather petty-minded and ego-driven personal challenge.

Yet Master Zhang did these out of protecting his disciples and their family voluntarily even though he knew those clearly crossed his occupation line as mainly fencing and swordplay instructor. Due to lack of evidence and sufficient witnesses - many of whom were apparently silenced, he could not prove Tetsuban to be in close collaboration with Premier Hu.

What he knew however was years ago when his disciple's father and brothers were still living together, Tetsuban once issued a challenge to them, demanding a one-to-one mecha duel with him.

Before they could even consent, Master Zhang volunteered on their behalf. That despite his lack of experience with operating Gladiators MK-I battle unit even if he had complete theory knowledge of what they were or ow they work.

They fought on and above Jiang Zhou mountains, watched by the entire Jiang family, some of his Academy colleagues and Tetsuban's men on sidelines. But being a cunning warrior, Tetsuban, at the last moment of what seemed to be an evenly matched duel, unleashed four lethal twin-headed mechanical Cougars from his mecha and pinned him down. The impact left his leg stuck in the tight one-man cockpit and the rest was injury history.

Despite this, he was thankful that all male Jiang family members came to his rescue upon realizing that Tetsuban and his Shibeibu troops played cheat and that he did not have to amputate his leg to save his life after being healed by top doctors. Otherwise, he would not even be in this mission with his disciple.

When the waiter approached him and his disciple with dishes and wine they ordered, he decided to look away and focus on what was important now despite wondering how and why his nemesis was in Capital City as well.

Yet Tetsuban retained his gaze on him.

For it was not merely a casual observation but harboured thoughts of a potential second confrontation. Despite having an upper hand in their last unexpected encounter, the Shibeibu commander considered the possibility of a formal one-on-one duel with his foe.

Originally, his intention had been to challenge the equally skilled family members of General Xue Lei, particularly the males, while the Dai commander was still engaged on the battlefields of Mount Chong An.

Paying no attention to his men debating over what they should do to accomplish their immediate task on hand, he simply complimented, "A highly skilled master in martial arts and mecha combat indeed."

"Sorry, commander?" Ankelan asked, looking puzzled over why his out-of-context compliment.

"I am referring to that old man behind you." Tetsuban clarified, while maintaining his gaze upon him.

Instinctively, all his four men looked at where he was staring before Hongshimu asked with his disbelief expression, "Is he really that highly skilled?"

"That's why I said your observation skills are all weak other than eating and filling your stomach!" The commander rebuked them, running out of patience over their incompetence. "That's also why you failed me time and again!

Do not be fooled by his old looks. For he knows more than all four of you. Even his apprentice is also the same though he is still learning from his master. Other than military soldiers and cadets in Dai Academy, there are not many highly skilled civilians in Capital City and surrounding territories."

Feeling an urgent need, Chi Feng conveyed to his mentor through gestures that he needed to relieve himself and would return shortly.

Upon obtaining his mentor's nod approval, he headed out to the outdoor cubicles for a restroom break. Despite the eating outlet's spacious size, he found those rather peculiar. The ambient surroundings and the need for such facilities in an open-air setting sparked his curiosity, prompting him to observe and reflect on this unusual feature.

Upon observing the apprentice rising from his seat, Ankelan proposed an idea, "Why don't we challenge his disciple first?"

Their commander approved with a nod. Following that, both Ankelan and Hongshimu promptly rose from their seats to follow the apprentice out of the back door.

As Chi Feng moved towards the outdoor cubicles, he suddenly felt a forceful kick on his back.

The unexpected blow caught him off guard, causing him to lose his balance and fall forward. Desperately trying to steady himself, he extended his arms and knees to break the fall.

During the fall, the red needle ball slipped from his pouch. It skittered a short distance away from him, making its retrieval his immediate concern. However, before he could reach it, someone stepped on his hand, preventing him from regaining control over the situation.

Looking up, Chi Feng saw two menacing figures dressed in black with orange and red tunics. The orange one - who had stamped on his hand - now turned his heel viciously, inflicting immense pain on his fingers. His accomplice, not to be outdone, added to his misery by doing the same on his other hand.

Sneering down at him, the one in orange commented sarcastically, "I thought you're as highly skilled as your master, but it seems you're just an ordinary lad." With those words, they callously lifted their feet and walked away, leaving him in agony.

Slowly rising to his feet, Chi Feng got up slowly and approached the needle ball. As he held it in his shaking hands still in pain, it suddenly reminded him of what his master said to him a moment ago.

Remember, whenever you feel upset or angry, just grasp this ball tightly. The needles inside, though painful, will serve as a reminder and importance of endurance.

Which was exactly how Chi Feng felt right now in emotions though his head reminded him now was not the right time to retaliate given his surroundings and presence of his master nearby.

"So, you're Master Zhang." Li Neng Yuan said as he stood before the imposing gates of his residence, a looming structure that mirrored the prestige of his family.

The evening had already cast its shadow, and the dimly lit streetlamps flickered as he greeted the unexpected visitors, Master Zhang and his disciple. The news of their arrival had been delivered by Ah Fu, the ever-vigilant servant, prompting him to personally attend to them.

Before responding, Master Zhang handed him a white envelope adorned with blue unicorn insignia before answering, "I'm a long-time friend of Chief Advisor Li Teng Yuan. I need his help in something very important."

"It's getting late now," Neng Yuan remarked, gazing up at the dark sky. "My father has had a busy day and is likely asleep by now. Therefore, I must trouble you by requesting that you return tomorrow."

Upon conveying this, he patted the envelope insignia twice, a subtle signal conveying discretion and secrecy.

Master Zhang, astute and perceptive, immediately recognized the significance of the gesture.

Understanding the potential risks associated with discussing sensitive matters at night, especially considering their connection to Xue Lei, he acknowledged the need for caution. Not just in what he spoke but who he spoke to, when and where.

Moreover, the possibility of being monitored and observed by anybody from anywhere became even more pressing, given their connection to Xue Lei, which he had previously shared with Chi Feng. Thus, he had to be concise and direct in his communication.

"In that case, I'll take my leave and return tomorrow." He excused himself before turning and departing with his apprentice back to Capital City Central, having got what he came for.

"Please." Li Neng Yuan said even after both master and apprentice turned and left.

Upon entering his home, he immediately went upstairs to study chamber and informed his father about them.

Upon opening the envelope, his father discovered a paper containing the address that said: 447 Jade Street, Dai Chang An Inn Cavern 2nd Floor Room 5.

He nodded at his son and pressed a button from under his desk, revealing a hidden compartment that doubled as a cabinet. Inside contained two identical sets of neatly folded white clothing with black tunic and turban hats, identical to their servants' attire.

Without further delay, both father and son began changing their attire as they were both men in the same room.

Outside Li Residence, two types of surveillance scouts lingered.

One was a pair of humans while the other a mechanical entity. Though not in collaboration, they shared a common objective.

Upon spotting what looked like two figures heading towards the gates from residence, the human duo quickly made a swift departure and hide in the shadows. Using a magnified horoscope, one of them discovered only two regular-looking servants dressed in black and white, who were walking ahead and illuminating the path with their torches.

Silently, they trailed after the servants.

As for the mechanical entity, it turned out to be a sleek and ominous bird, with its sharp talons and wings spread wide, perched atop the roof after soaring over the gates following the servants' departure. Its eyes glowed bright red, casting an eerie light on the surroundings.

Upon configuring back into the disc, it merged seamlessly with the roof tiles. Staying motionless and inconspicuous, it exploited its enhanced senses to gather intel of whatever activity below.

Despite realizing that they were being followed no matter what attire they wore, Li Teng Yuan and his son maintained their composure.

With his current role as the Imperial Magistrate and his son as both the West District major and current law enforcement commander, he was certain that nobody would dare to ambush and attack them.

Unless those assailants were completely ignorant of their identities and severe consequences for their actions.

Due to the risk of being recognized and exploited by Premier Hu and his Royal Imperial Circle, he had a strong motive to have himself and his son dress in disguise, to conceal their usual appearances. This necessity arose from his decision to defy their orders by executing General Xue Lei and pleading with the Majesty in his recent outburst.

With the aid of the GPS tracker on his mobile device, he successfully located the inn listed in the address note from envelope.

Nodding to his son, they promptly made their way to the inn entrance and knocked on the door. Though the establishment was officially closed for the day, Teng Yuan knew that the innkeepers would still welcome those connected to room guests especially if they were prominent figures.

Besides fencing, martial arts and swordplay, Master Zhang had a penchant for playing musical instruments.

Now that he was in the guest room with his disciple, he began playing the flute. The music was of one of the popular Dai Academy songs that the cadets sang while marching and going for outdoors camping and training.

His apprentice Chi Feng helped to unpack to prepare for sleep later. Despite there were only two of them, there was also one bed which he decided to let his master sleep upon while he prepared his own sleeping bag other than essentials.

There was a knock on the door. Upon hearing, Master Zhang immediately stopped playing and asked, "Who's that?"

"A friend from faraway." Came a reply from someone who sounded exactly like his age.

He nodded at Chi Feng to open the door and if necessary, defend them both.

Li Teng Yuan felt joy and astonishment upon encountering someone he recognized but had not interacted with for years since being appointed as Chief Advisor.

It was great to see his old friend again and he could not help but being impressed by the tall stature and youthful appearance of his friend's disciple. Very identical to his son Neng Yuan.

His friend Master Zhang was equally delighted. For relationship went beyond just casual friendship, as they collaborated in educating and training students at the Academy. While he was a fit military commander in his younger days, Master Zhang served as instructor in fencing, martial arts, and swordplay, making their partnership in the academic setting particularly effective.

"Master Zhang," Teng Yuan greeted him with his warm smile. "How have you been, old friend?"

"Chief Advisor Li and Young Master Li, we finally met again after years." Master Zhang expressed warmly, gesturing for them to take a seat in the modest room, with only two stools and small circular table besides a single bed.

He obliged and his friend did likewise while both his son and friend's disciple stood behind them.

"Chief Advisor Li, I've been getting along fine." Master Zhang responded to his earlier question. "What about you?"

"I'm getting fine too." Teng Yuan replied despite still feeling the emotional impact of events occurring in the Majesty's Imperial Chambers earlier. "You may dispense with the formalities and call me Teng Yuan here."

"Sorry, Teng Yuan for troubling you both to come here in disguise. My sincere apologies." Master Zhang conveyed a sense of culpability.

"Please don't mention that. I also owed you an apology for being unable to meet you at my residence and getting my son to inform you the bad news." Teng Yuan expressed remorse as well for his earlier absence.

"Please, Teng Yuan, you do not owe me anything. Just by coming here at your risk, I'm already happy. Sensing someone watching us outside the gates, how could I not know?"

"Even before you come here, I already anticipated what had happened. General Xue Lei had been your disciple, our hero and saviour having fought and won several battles against our Shibeibu foes. Now that he had been imprisoned, I knew you will come here looking for him."

"I'm glad that you had the foresight to see my disciple virtues despite being appointed as Chief Advisor and member of Imperial Royal Circle." Master Zhang complimented him.

"Thank you for your compliments. But compared to General Xue Lei, my accomplishments are nothing." Teng Yuan felt modest and unused to such praises, even by his long-time friend.

"Regarding General Xue Lei's case, what suggestions do you have in mind?" Master Zhang enquired, turning their attention to the matter at hand,

"About such matters, we need to plan carefully and don't rush blindly. I feel…" Teng Yuan, recognizing the need for careful planning, began outlining his thoughts.

At this moment, a shadow appeared behind the translucent walls, alerting Master Zhang immediately on suspicion of another presence which might not be friendly this time.

Instinctively, he turned to Chi Feng and ordered, "Chi Er, go and drive the stray cat away."

His apprentice headed for the doorway but before he was out of the room, his friend's son took swift action, tossing what appeared to be a beam saber handle to him.

In swift response to the perceived threat, Chi Feng seized the beam saber handle and bolted out of the room with haste.

The urgency in his movements reflected his readiness to confront and neutralize any potential danger that lurked ahead. His sharp senses and keen perception allowed him to detect a fleeting figure darting through the dimly lit hallways of the inn. The swift and purposeful movement of the shadowy form, which seemed to be that of a man, left an enigmatic atmosphere in its wake.

The dimly lit surroundings only added to the tension, creating an atmosphere charged with anticipation. His pursuit was characterized by a sense of urgency, driven by the need to apprehend or confront the elusive figure whose intentions remained unclear.

The interplay of light and shadows heightened the intensity of the moment, turning the pursuit into a dynamic and suspenseful encounter within the confines of the inn.

Realizing that his presence being detected, Guangxionggui sprinted as quickly as he could.

As the stairway corridor was small, he leapt down to the ground with acrobatic leap and rendezvoused with Langyuewei before exiting the inn cavern together.

Cloaked in dark suits and boots, adorned with blue and green tunics that concealed their identities, their faces were completely masked save their eyes. Despite being Shibeibu soldiers, they were ordered by their commander to dress like assassins and test both the apprentice and master this time.

Just when they thought their plan was working, somehow the master got alerted by their presence.

A highly skilled master in martial arts and mecha combat indeed.

Do not be fooled by his old looks for he knows more than all four of you.

The words spoken by their commander during lunch served as a stark reminder of the true abilities possessed by the master.

However, they soon felt a sense of relief as instead of confronting them directly, the master had sent his apprentice after them. The very same lad, whom their comrades Ankelan and Hongshimu had humiliated and defeated during lunch. Even with their commander keeping them as backups and send just them both, they remained confident that they would bring the young disciple to his knees again, this time showing no mercy.

Having keenly observed the enigmatic assassin executing a gravity-defying descent from the second level to the ground before getting away with their accomplice, Chi Feng quickly processed the unfolding situation.

Recognizing the significance of their chosen route, he decided to emulate their actions, taking a calculated risk in pursuit of the mysterious figures.

Upon replicating their daring maneuver, he found himself transitioning from the confined interiors of the inn to the expansive and chilly thoroughfares of Capital City. The nocturnal ambiance, coupled with elongated shadows cast by the dim streetlights, provided a backdrop that played to his advantage.

In the stillness of the night, he was able to concentrate completely on the pair he was following, which was not possible during the busy daytime when the streets were full of people and numerous things happening.

The stark difference between the peacefulness of the night and the urgent pursuit created an air of tension and intrigue, shrouding the scene in mystery. His unyielding commitment to catch the evasive duo was apparent as he steered his way through the dark streets with unwavering purpose.

Feeling the relentless pursuit of the determined disciple closing in, Guangxionggui and Langyuewei opted to halt their frantic dash through the city streets.

Realizing that continued street-level evasion to be futile and energy-draining, they decided to shift their strategy. Moreover, they had an obligation to their commander and could not return without an appropriate excuse for their failure again.

So instead, they shifted gears by leaping with agility and precision onto the rooftops of adjacent shophouses. This maneuver was not an ordinary feat and required exceptional abilities. While acknowledging that they may not be the best in such, their prior training as cadets had equipped them with the necessary skills to execute this daring rooftop escape.

The elevated vantage point offered them a strategic advantage as they continued to navigate the urban terrain, propelled by the discipline instilled in them during their cadet training.

As Chi Feng witnessed their nimble ascent onto the rooftop, he instinctively brought halted his pursuit momentarily.

In a display of acrobatic finesse, he seamlessly executed a flawless somersault, preparing to counter the assailants on the elevated terrain.

Upon firmly landing on the rooftop, ready to recommence the chase with unwavering determination, he found himself confronted with the adaptability of his elusive adversaries who swiftly recalibrated their strategy, leaping with extraordinary agility to the roof of the opposite shophouse. The sudden change in their positioning created a spatial gap, introducing a new challenge for him.

Undeterred by the barrier, he initialled another upward jump and after a while, descended to the roads beneath, continuing the chase with unwavering determination

The pursuit had now evolved into a high-stakes game of cat and mouse, with him exhibiting a relentless pursuit to prevent them from slipping through his grasp.

As the chase unfolded, it guided him beyond the bustling city gates and into the all-encompassing embrace of the woods. The urban landscape gave way to a natural labyrinth of densely packed trees and mysterious shadows that stretched beneath the canopy.

The transition marked a shift from the familiar urban setting to the untamed wilderness, setting the stage for a heightened sense of intrigue and danger.

Navigating through the dense forest woods posed a formidable test especially at night. Besides darkness, its winding trails and hidden hurdles could easily deceive even the most skilled chaser. Yet, undaunted by the intricate landscape, he persisted, with each stride showcasing his unwavering resolve and expertise. The rustling foliage and the soft illumination of the moon added an otherworldly radiance to the surroundings, establishing an atmosphere filled with tension and expectation.

As he continued the pursuit through the wooded expanse, the venture evolved into a thrilling odyssey. The undergrowth, woven into a tapestry of tangled vines and foliage, became the backdrop for a dynamic encounter between predator and prey, heightening the stakes of the unfolding drama.

The pine trees stood vigil, their outstretched limbs like watchful guardians, as the apprentice pressed on in his relentless pursuit of the agile assassins. His unyielding resolve firmly etched on his face, he advanced with deliberate strides, his movements directed by an unwavering commitment to bring the chase to a definitive end. The woodland, once a haven of tranquil grace, now resounded with the steady beat of his footfalls, weaving a suspenseful narrative of tenacity and purpose beneath the lunar canopy.

Amid the pursuit, the relentless chase through the woods reached a pivotal moment as one of the assassins abruptly came to a halt, turning to face the determined Chi Feng. The moonlit night accentuated the tense atmosphere as the assailant, draped in dark clothing with a blue tunic, revealed a menacing Morningstar from his concealed position.

The assassin propelled himself forward with determined intent, his eyes fixed on Chi Feng. The Morningstar, a lethal weapon with a spiked ball at its end, was poised to deliver a crushing blow. The air crackled with anticipation as the assassin closed the distance between them, the moon casting an eerie glow on the unfolding confrontation.

Unlike the previous encounter in the inn's toilet cubicles, Chi Feng maintained an unwavering composure in the face of imminent danger. With a fluidity that spoke of his seasoned combat skills, he skilfully intercepted the incoming weapon.

Swiftly and precisely, he executed a rapid backswing, the Morningstar connecting with the blue-tunic assassin's chest. The lethal impact sent the latter crashing to the ground dead. The moonlight bore witness to Chi Feng's adept maneuver, turning a potentially dire situation into a display of martial prowess.

The moonlit woods bore witness to the unfolding drama as the other assassin, fuelled by rage over his partner's demise, swiftly pivoted to launch a retaliatory attack. Employing the same acrobatic vertical leap that characterized their earlier movements, he revealed a trident with three sharp prongs, poised for a deadly assault.

Undeterred and standing firm on the forest floor, Chi Feng calmly assessed the unfolding threat. With a practiced efficiency, he extracted the beam saber handle from his belt and activated the blue-illuminated blade with a press of a button. All these in time to meet the oncoming assault.

In a display of remarkable skill and precision, Chi Feng intercepted the trident-wielding assassin's attack. With a seamless motion, he executed a swift swing of the beam saber, slicing the trident into two halves.

Not content with merely deflecting the assault, he capitalized on the opening he created. The blue beam blade found its mark as it swiftly thrust into the heart of the green-tunic assassin. The assailant, now incapacitated, joined his fallen comrade in the moonlit forest.

Chi Feng's swift and efficient counterattack left no room for hesitation, solidifying his reputation as a deadly combatant. The night air carried a sense of finality as the pursuit, marked by leaps and clashes, came to a resolute end beneath the canopy of trees.

Overcoming both adversaries with remarkable ease, the apprentice deactivated the beam saber and made his way back to Capital City and his master.

This is Jiang Chi Feng.

Not just who he is but what he is capable of.

Abandoned as infant but now apprentice of Master Zhang and adopted member of the esteemed Jiang Manor under the vigilant guardianship of Madam Jiang Xue Niang.

Even before learning the truth, he already acknowledged and accepted his master as his father for years of upbringing him. For what he owed what he has and knows now to his mentor be it education, fitness, martial arts and sword fighting as he had just demonstrated in slaying the two assassins.

His training under Master Zhang, a former Dai Academy instructor, transcended the typical cadet experience, featuring greater rigor and a more stringent upbringing.

While most Dai citizens are expected to serve in the Academy as students and military cadets, his unique circumstances, coupled with his mentor's connections, granted him a rare exemption of getting personalized training from his mentor, shaping him into a formidable force.

If there is one weakness, it is that he always defends the weak and vulnerable from harm especially young women even it means using force.

However, his tough upbringing clearly defined his temperament which his master and Madam Jiang constantly reminds him to be mindful and in control of.

Not just how he behaves but fights as well.
