While Officer Jenny's mind was a complete blank, there was another elder whose head was spinning just as much.
This elder lived in Pallet Town, a world-renowned researcher and one of the major figures in the Pokémon League. But right now, none of that mattered. At this moment, his only identity was that of a grandfather who'd just found out his grandson had been taken away by the police. His name... was Professor Oak!
After a heartbeat of blankness came pure fury!
"I understand." Professor Oak eyed Lorelei on the other end of the call, his voice icy cold. "You don't need to get involved in this. Just make sure Suzie and Giselle don't panic. Silas will be out before tonight."
"Understood."
Lorelei nodded with a bitter smile, already regretting telling Professor Oak what had happened. She'd only wanted Oak to pull some strings and bail Silas out, not start a political earthquake. But Oak's reaction went way beyond what she'd expected!
Once their call ended, Professor Oak immediately dialed another number.
The call was picked up almost instantly. On the screen appeared another elder, smiling as he greeted Oak. "Hey Oak, to what do I owe the call? Oh! Have those Pokémon I asked you to train been handled already? If so, I'll send someone over to pick them up today."
"Pick them up?" Professor Oak's lips curled in a cold sneer. "Pick up what, exactly? Let me make this clear: Every single Pokémon you sent me for cultivation is gone, and you'd better not even dream of asking me to train for you again!"
"Whoa, whoa!" The elder's face fell. He spoke hurriedly, "Oak, I haven't messed with you, have I? Last time you asked me to support your grandson, I said yes without hesitation. You can't say I never did you a favor!"
"Support?" Oak's sneer only grew. "You sure did. My grandson's been 'supported' so well you had him arrested; rumor is he's about to get three to five years in jail. Are you going to tell me that's your idea of 'protection'?"
Police custody?
Three-to-five-year sentence?
The elder's face turned ugly. Now he understood why Oak was so livid. Silas was Oak's pride and joy. Every time the old gang gathered, Oak would brag endlessly about the boy. Now, Silas had been thrown in jail by his own friends' people. If Oak didn't flip out, who would?
And he fully understood Silas's abilities and potential—practically Kanto's next Champion and their greatest hope for the region's future. Offending Silas was beyond self-destructive.
What's more, earlier that morning, Silas had helped the police resolve the Acapulco incident, minimizing the loss—yet now, just hours later, he gets thrown in jail? That's an insult.
His voice strained, the elder asked, "Which station?"
"Celadon City." Oak replied, the chill in his voice undiminished.
"Got it!" The elder nodded swiftly, his face going stern. "Don't worry—I'll get you a satisfactory answer!"
"Don't bother!" Oak shook his head, voice still arctic. "Let me warn you: if my grandson suffers even the tiniest injustice, don't expect me to train a single Pokémon for you ever again. Not just that—if something like the Acapulco mess happens again, don't even think about asking Silas for help. The Oak family doesn't lift a finger for ungrateful traitors."
Ungrateful traitors...
A wry, pained smile appeared on the elder's face. "Don't worry. I promise, nothing will happen to Silas, and we'll do everything we can to make him happy."
"Fine." Professor Oak nodded and hung up.
He didn't calm down at all—instead, he immediately dialed a second number.
This one belonged to his son, Silas's father, Shingen Oak.
"Dad?" Shingen Oak appeared onscreen, surprised. "What's up? Not every day you call me."
"Oh?" Professor Oak snapped back, voice cold as ever. "So I'm not allowed to call my own son now?"
"N-no, that's not what I meant!" Shingen shook his head, immediately sensing his father's foul mood. He carefully asked, "Did something happen?"
"Yes—something big." Oak spat out the words. "Silas was just arrested by Celadon City police. This year, I want you to slice our donation to the police budget in half. If we spend a penny more than that, you're not setting foot in this house again!"
Silas arrested?!
Shingen instantly knew why his father was so furious. In their family, nobody ranked higher than Silas in Oak's affections. His expression turned grim. "Understood. I'll cut the police budget by two-thirds. Do you want me to pull some strings to get Silas out?"
"No need!" Oak shook his head, then, noticing Shingen's confusion, added, "Have Kimura—the police chief—handle it personally. If he can't solve this, I'll handle it myself."
"Got it!" Shingen nodded, then, anxious, added, "Anything else?"
Click!
All he got in response was a hang-up. Shingen stared at the now-black screen, sighing. He picked up his office phone, dialed an internal number, and barked, "Slash this year's police budget by three-quarters. You guys can figure out the excuse."
...
Celadon City.
Police Station.
Chief's Office.
Officer Jenny's dramatic reaction nearly scared the hell out of the male officer.
Watching Jenny standing there stunned, the man asked cautiously, "Officer Jenny, are you okay?"
"N-no, I'm fine." Her voice trembled as she asked, "You—you weren't too rough with him, were you?"
"No way!" The man, oblivious to Jenny's mood, said smugly, "That kid had quite the attitude, but I put him in his place. After a few harsh words, he got real quiet!"
Scolded?
You scolded him?! Do you realize what kind of disaster you've brought on us?!
Officer Jenny wanted to burst into tears, but she knew this wasn't the officer's fault. Every police station dealt with stubborn kids. Nobody expected to have to tiptoe around a suspect. And she herself had told the officer not to go easy on Silas!
Riiiiiing!
Right as she was fretting about how to fix this mess, her desk phone started ringing.
Glancing at the caller ID, her heart nearly stopped. She recognized the number instantly—it was the direct line from Kanto HQ, the highest authority in the entire region's police force. She knew trouble had arrived!
The phone kept ringing. The male officer asked nervously, "Officer Jenny, aren't you going to answer?"
"Of course!" Jenny forced herself to sound calm. She turned to the man, tone urgent, "Go—right now—to the interrogation room. And listen: don't act tough anymore. If the boy asks for anything, give it to him. If he wants to leave, unlock the handcuffs and have a car take him home!"
"Huh?!" The male officer was stunned. "Is that okay? Aren't we supposed to, uh… process him?"
"Process?" she thought bitterly. "It'll be me getting 'processed' any second now!"
She hid her panic, trying to keep her face composed. "I just realized—he's only ten. With kids, we should show understanding, not be so strict. We've already scared him enough; I'm sure he won't make this mistake again."
"Understood!" The man, now full of respect, hurried off. "I'll go educate him and then let him go!"
No no no, don't educate—just let him go!
Jenny tried to stop him with her eyes, but the phone still rang insistently and she had no choice but to pick up. In a tiny voice, she answered, "Celadon Police Station, Officer Jenny speaking…"
"Shut up!" A deep, furious voice thundered from the other end—a voice that Jenny recognized at once as the same elder who'd been on the call with Professor Oak. "I don't need your introduction. Who doesn't know Celadon's infamous Officer Jenny, eh?"
"…Chief Kimura…" Jenny whimpered.
Police Chief! The top authority in all of Kanto—there was only one, and he ran the entire regional police force.
Kimura was seething. "Don't call me Chief! You're doing my job better than me—since you're brave enough to arrest people even I wouldn't dare touch. Even better, you're ready to convict him!"
"It—it's all a misunderstanding!" Jenny cried desperately. "Really, Chief—it wasn't intentional!"
"Misunderstanding?" Chief Kimura's voice was ice. "Do you know how much trouble your 'little misunderstanding' has caused? Professor Oak just announced he'll never train Pokémon for us again—and word from Indigo League is our police budget just got slashed by seventy-five percent, all because of you!"
No more training Pokémon?
Police budget slashed seventy-five percent?!
Jenny was dumbstruck. She knew she'd screwed up big time, but not this badly… and not this fast!
"Chief… what should I do?"
"Do?" Kimura's tone dripped with sarcasm. "You're the boss here—you tell me! The League's golden child solves a crisis for us in the morning and gets arrested in the afternoon. I've never been so embarrassed! You figure it out! If you can't get him out of there happy tonight, don't bother showing up tomorrow—go work traffic duty on the busiest street in town!"
"Un—understood!" Jenny whispered, as if facing her own execution. "I'll make sure he leaves smiling!"
...
Celadon City.
Police Station.
"Kid, do you even realize how much trouble you're in today?"
"Kid, I'm telling you: keeping quiet won't help. Just fess up—confession is your only way out!"
"Kid, this isn't your home and I'm not your dad, thank God, because if I were, I'd be ashamed to have a kid who behaves like this!"
Hearing the rants from the interrogation room as she approached, Officer Jenny got paler by the step, dreading what she'd find. She had no idea just how far Silas's anger might go—but she did know it could easily burn this whole station to the ground!
She rushed to the room, determined to stop things from getting any worse.
As she entered, the same male officer from before greeted her: "Officer Jenny, the little brat won't say a word. Just sits there like a corpse. I say we lock him up for a few days, make him regret it later!"
Brat? Corpse? Lock him up?
Jenny wanted to cry on the spot but held her composure, simply nodding coldly. "Noted. You all step outside—I'll talk to him myself."
"Yes, Officer Jenny!"
The three officers saluted and started to file out.
But before they could leave, Silas's voice came, calm and cold: "No need. Let them stay. After all, they've said so much, given me such an education. I think it's only right I pay the favor back."
Dead silence.
Jenny's heart sank. She immediately realized: Silas was furious—exactly as she'd feared.
Even worse, the lead officer actually stopped, turning and saying, "Don't worry—over the next few days, I'll teach you plenty…"
"Quiet!" Jenny hissed, her face freezing over. "He wants you to stay, you stay!"
"Huh?!" The officer stared, confused, but quickly sat down anyway.
Silas took it all in with a little smirk. He knew the right people had gotten involved and Jenny must've figured out who he really was. A cruel glint flashed in his eyes.
He wasn't petty by nature, and he knew he'd done wrong in the first place. But Celadon's police had gone way overboard—slapping on handcuffs, threatening jail, even insulting his family. These grievances he would not let slide.
"Um…" Jenny approached, her voice small. "I apologize for what happened earlier. It was my fault—I was too impulsive."
The three officers stared, dumbfounded. They'd never in their lives seen Officer Jenny apologize to anyone!
But they were even more shocked when Silas spoke, voice sweet as honey: "Impulsive? Not at all! My Tyranitar really did hurt people. I was wrong. You might as well stop overthinking, just give me ten years or so—I'll accept any sentence, really!"
Ten years? Just give me the firing squad, why don't you!?
Jenny nearly burst into tears. She forced a weak smile. "It's all been a misunderstanding. That's all this is!"
"No way." Silas shook his head, his smile 'innocent' and bright. "I won't deny what I did. In fact, you should add another charge—threatening an officer. After all, I did threaten you with my Pokémon, didn't I?"
"No, not at all!" Jenny shook her head furiously. "That doesn't count as a threat!"
"It doesn't?" Silas arched a brow. "What would?"
"Nothing you do counts!" Jenny said, the bitterest smile on her lips. "If you do it, it's not a crime."
"How could that be!?" Silas gasped (mockingly). "Didn't you say not even an Elite Four badge could save me? How could a powerless kid like me be above the law?"
"You're safe, you're safe!" Jenny pleaded, now desperate to appease him. "Just—please, what will satisfy you? Whatever punishment you want—I'll take it."
Silas looked from her to the stunned officers.
Suddenly, the victory felt empty. It wasn't his own power forcing Jenny to bow, but his family's. The fun was gone. He sighed and asked, "Still wearing your handcuffs?"
"Yes!" Jenny nodded quickly.
"You three?" Silas shot at the officers.
"We are!" *3
The trio answered as one, still in disbelief.
"Alright," Silas said coolly, "then find a spot and cuff yourselves up."
"Huh?" *4
The whole group froze.
"Problem?" Silas arched his brow again.
"No, not at all." Jenny shook her head, then turned to the officers: "Well? Didn't you hear? Get to it!"
"Yes!" The three scrambled to lock themselves to the furniture.
Once they'd all cuffed themselves, Jenny looked at Silas with a timid, almost pleading expression. "Is this okay now?"
"And you?" Silas jerked his chin. "You think you're exempt?"
"No!" Jenny was nearly in tears. She handed him her own cuffs. "Here—go ahead, you do it."
Silas took her cuffs, awkwardly fastened one end to her wrist and the other to the chair, and tossed the key out of reach. Then, standing with a lazy stretch and zero interest in the people behind him, he walked out the door.
As he passed the mouthy male officer, he plucked a rag from the table, crouched down, and narrowed his eyes. "No matter who you are, you don't get to insult my family. Remember that."
That said, Silas stuffed the rag straight into the officer's mouth.
