"Do I really need this?" I asked the empty room.
The empty room, traitorous as ever, did not stop me.
I picked something tasteful. Not outrageous. Not ridiculous. Just enough to make my heart race when I looked at it. Something that whispered rather than screamed.
I folded it carefully and set it aside, my hands trembling just a little.
God.
I was a needy woman who had missed him terribly, and there was absolutely no pretending otherwise anymore.
I sank onto the bed, hugging a pillow to my chest, staring at the door like it might open any second.
My phone sat beside me, silent.
Time stretched.
Every sound made me jump.
I laughed softly, shaking my head at myself. "Get it together," I whispered. "You're acting like he's never coming back."
But my heart didn't listen.
It just waited—hopeful, anxious, alive in a way it hadn't been for a long time.
And for now?
That was enough.
