Om frantically expressed his apologies to Mill, but Mill merely sat in his chair, staring coldly at him.
After a moment, Om had already stopped bowing, his eyes rolling back, his face turning a purplish shade. He was on the verge of losing consciousness.
At the very last moment when Om could no longer hold on, Mill waved his hand.
Instantly, the strange energy surrounding Om vanished, and his breathing returned to normal.
With labored, bellows-like breaths, Om's complexion gradually returned to normal.
Although Mill had spared him at the last moment, Om dared not relax even slightly. He trembled as he knelt on the floor, continuing to express his apologies.
"Cough… cough… this subordinate… this subordinate is incompetent and failed to complete the mission."
Mill adjusted his glasses and looked coldly at Om kneeling before him. "I am disappointed. Your foolishness has caused the company a massive loss."
"I will have this matter investigated thoroughly. Your petty schemes are best used in the right place."
Hearing Mill's warning, Om shivered all over.
"So… my thoughts have been completely seen through."
Mill stood and circled around the desk, coming directly in front of Om.
Om, bowing his head low, could only see the tips of Mill's shoes. The brown leather shoes revealed no brand, but even with the naked eye, one could see the top-quality craftsmanship.
Mill lifted his foot and pressed it against Om's head, continuing to speak coldly.
"I will assign you other tasks. If you fail to complete them, you will have no value at all. Understand?"
"I have no intention of using you for my next pair of shoes—though you are obedient enough for it."
Hearing this, Om's eyes involuntarily flicked toward Mill's finely crafted shoes.
"Th-this… it's human skin?!" Om's mind erupted in a storm of panic.
He paused for a moment, then immediately rolled up his sleeves and, while polishing Mill's shoes, stammered, "This… this subordinate understands. I will cherish this opportunity. I—"
Before Om could finish pledging his loyalty, Mill interrupted him.
Mill lifted his foot from Om's head and turned toward the large floor-to-ceiling window.
He didn't spare Om another glance, coldly ordering, "Leave!"
Om felt as if he had just received a great pardon. He scrambled to his feet and hurried out of the office, fearful that a slow movement would further anger Mill.
Once Om had left, Mill stood alone by the window, gazing at the blizzard outside, his eyes gleaming with thought.
In fact, when he first heard Om report the mission's failure, Mill had wanted nothing more than to tear him to pieces. But in the end, he suppressed his rage.
The monsters were in a special situation right now, and every loyal power under his command was invaluable.
It must be noted that Om had cost the organization an S-class superpower. Under normal circumstances, not even ten lives would suffice to repay such a loss.
Even if Mill shifted all the blame to the unlucky head of Blackwater, Saiko, he still could not escape severe punishment.
Thinking this through, Mill lowered his head again and rubbed his temples.
Though he was the leader of the monsters, he could not truly run the organization like a well-oiled machine.
To the organization, the monsters were merely a violent force, and Mill was only the head of one department.
Moreover, recently, politicians had been interfering more and more with the monsters. Mill needed to consolidate every ounce of power he could control.
Only in this way could he prevent himself from falling behind in this invisible contest of influence.
The organization had many factions, and Mill led one of the largest.
So in facing these power struggles, he could not afford to lag behind or show weakness.
Watching the blizzard outside grow fiercer, Mill couldn't help but reflect on his own situation.
He stared at the howling wind and snow, silently lost in thought.
Meanwhile, in Blackwater, Saiko sat in his office as Om finally returned to report.
With Om gone, he had once again regained full control of Blackwater.
"The mission failed, and I've run into quite a few problems," Saiko thought, frowning heavily at the failed operation.
He had no idea he had been appointed as Om's scapegoat. His mind was full of thoughts on how to deal with the Hexagram Alliance.
He knew the strength of the phantoms, and through this mission, he gained a deeper understanding of the Hexagram Alliance's capabilities.
He realized that with Blackwater's current strength, they could not hope to oppose them directly.
Fortunately, they still had one advantage: the Hexagram Alliance operated in the open, while Blackwater hid in the shadows.
To ensure Blackwater remained hidden and maintained this advantage, Saiko instructed his subordinates to reduce the number of ongoing missions.
Beyond reducing task volume, he added more security measures before and after missions and took additional steps to conceal the headquarters' location.
These were all the measures Saiko could think of to prevent Blackwater's headquarters from being exposed.
In this area, he had indeed planned meticulously in advance.
Saiko's current plan was to lie low, waiting for Om to report back to headquarters.
He believed that once that happened, the headquarters would dispatch someone to deal with the Hexagram Alliance and Liu Xiu. After all, the alliance's current strength exceeded what Blackwater could handle.
In truth, Saiko was a highly competent worker, but his personality was somewhat naive in the professional environment.
Especially in dealing with social nuances or handling failed missions, Saiko often appeared immature.
Just as he had once been transferred from headquarters to Blackwater, he now faced taking the fall for a major failure—but he had no foresight or preparation for it.
Frankly, someone like Saiko—diligent, capable, and honest—is rare even in normal life. In a specialized organization like the monsters, it's even more unusual.
Right now, Saiko had no notion of scapegoating or responsibilities. He only cared whether his plan would be effective.
He believed that by reducing activity and missions, Blackwater could safely remain hidden until headquarters sent someone to handle the situation.
Saiko's reasoning was sound. If he hadn't immediately recalled personnel on missions or taken measures against their tracking, they would have already been exposed to the Hexagram Alliance.
The Hexagram Alliance had already begun investigating Blackwater's traces with great speed.
Xiaobai and Mary Jane were intensively tracking the clues left behind by Blackwater.
