"This is stronger than what I gave you before, Alpha," the healer said, not looking up from his work, where he was grinding and mixing herbs. "It will keep your wolf subdued through the night."
The air was heavy with the bitter stench of valerian and foxglove, so thick he could almost taste it. The healer measured water with trembling hands, poured it in, and stirred until the mixture turned a deep shade of green. Knox already knew this new draught would not help him. Nothing ever did.
The healer approached the bed cautiously and pressed his fingertips to Knox's pulse point. The touch sent a jolt of warmth through Knox's veins.
"Your heart races even at rest," the healer murmured, more to himself than to Knox. "The boundary between man and beast grows thinner."
