Chapter 14 - System Intervention

'Shit… I can't let that bastard run," Henry gritted his teeth, then rushed to the window, he tried to look out, only to see Alaric running toward his car with his wife and child.

If Henry didn't do anything about it, Alaric would get away for sure and Henry wasn't ready to take that risk.

Henry fired shots in their direction, but soon lost sight of them. Even so, he was determined to follow and promised to get hold of them. So he jumped out of the window and chased after Alaric.

Meanwhile, Nathan was surrounded by multiple men shooting at him. The force of the bullets broke through the concrete, and Nathan's heart beat every second in panic. His body trembling, almost urinating on his pants.

Nathan had nothing to defend himself with. His only hope was that Henry would come to his rescue, but his heart shattered even more when Henry ignored him completely and chased after Alaric. Henry was supposed to be his protector, appointed by his father—if the story Henry told him was even true.

Nathan, confused and terrified, could only pray for a miracle to happen. And then, suddenly, a blue translucent screen appeared in mid-air, and a mechanical voice echoed inside his mind:

[Threat detected. Host is required to eliminate threat. Stamina and durability increased. Host has unlocked rare skill: Flames.]

[Flames durability: 10%]

Nathan was flattered as he stared at the glowing message from the blue translucent screen floating mid air. Just then, a bullet broke through the concrete and sped toward him—but this time, he could see it coming in slow motion.

He jerked his head aside, and the bullet struck the wall.

Nathan froze in disbelief.

"Wow... what just happened? I saw that thing in slow motion."

That was the moment Nathan realized he could do something beyond human.

More men came into view, bullets raining toward him. Once again, they slowed before his eyes. Acting on instinct, Nathan raised his hands—and flames burst from his palms, scorching the men who were firing at him.

"Fuck..." Nathan stared then shouted in astonishment. But he didn't have time to dwell on the amazement he just performed, he needed to escape the building no matter what.

Nathan watched the men burn from his flames, still questioning whether the flames truly came from his hands.

"I have to get out of here," Nathan mumbled inwardly, then bolted out the door.

When he reached outside, Henry was nowhere to be found. Nathan decided to head toward the car they had come with, maybe he could find Henry there.

But as he walked along the road, a car suddenly charged at him at high speed. Inside was Alaric, with his wife and their ten-year-old child.

Alaric had seen Henry with Nathan earlier, and assumed the two had come to assassinate him. Desperate, he decided to end Nathan right there by running him down with the car.

The car slammed into Nathan—yet instead of sending him flying, it crashed and tumbled violently across the ground.

The most shocking part was that Nathan didn't move. He stood firmly on the road, completely unharmed, and this scene left him dumfounded.

"What..." Nathan stared blankly. At first, he hadn't even realized a car was coming. He felt the impact, but there was no pain, and in that same seconds the car was sent crashing on the ground.

Meanwhile, Henry—still chasing Alaric—saw everything and was left speechless.

"Wait... so it's true. The boy... he can do impossible things."

It was hard even for Henry to believe. He approached Nathan, his voice trembling.

"Lord Nathan... What just happened? Hope you're not hurt?"

Nathan wished he could answer, but he was as confused as Henry.

"I don't know," Nathan replied, his eyes fixed on the overturned car.

"Let's forget about that for now. Our main focus is getting Alaric alive," Henry said firmly, then rushed toward the wreck car which was already turned over on the ground.

Inside the car, Alaric was bleeding heavily from his head and had already passed out.

Henry shoved the door open and dragged him out.

"We've got what we came for, Let's get out of here," Henry instructed, glancing at Nathan.

Nathan nodded, but just as he turned to leave, he heard a faint voice.

"Please... help me."

Nathan froze, then looked back at the car. Inside, he saw a woman with a young boy trapped. At the same time, the car's fuel tank began to spark and hiss.

"Shit—I have to save them," Nathan panicked.

"Nathan, leave them! We don't have time to waste here. The police Alaric called for backup will be here any moment from now," Henry warned sharply.

But Nathan couldn't just abandon a woman and her child to die, he has a soft heart.
