Chapter 36: Underground Moves
Kaelith's streets were alive with whispers and shadow. Though Kairo had tamed the flames in the Sun-Throne square, the city remained tense, every alley and rooftop alive with unseen eyes. Liora crouched atop a crumbling wall, Selene beside her, surveying the northwest district where the Red Hands had planned their next moves. The city's heart pulsed with both fear and hope, a rhythm that only those in the shadows could feel.
The Red Hands stirred beneath them, sharpening blades and plotting strikes with reckless fervor. Their leader, scarf trailing like a dark banner, barked orders to scattered groups. "The Dominion reels. Tonight we strike at the supply depots, free prisoners, and show the city that chains can be broken."
Selene leaned close to Liora, her voice a quiet anchor amidst the chaos. "Chains can be broken, yesābut only if we don't destroy what we fight for. Some of them are too eager. They'll burn everything if we don't hold the line."
Liora nodded, eyes scanning the streets below. Civilians huddled in doorways, some brave enough to watch, others too frightened to move. Even soldiers seemed unsure of their footing, uncertain whether the boy who bent fire had truly changed the cityāor merely shifted its danger. "We move carefully," Liora said. "Each prisoner freed, each depot destroyed⦠it must be precise. No unnecessary blood. Not tonight."
The rebels fanned out, torches flaring against the dark, moving through the alleys like smoke, ghosts in the night. Liora and Selene led a small group, cutting chains, opening cages, and helping frightened captives escape without alerting Dominion patrols. Each step was a testāof patience, precision, and moral restraint. To the Red Hands, mercy was weakness. To Liora, it was the only weapon that mattered.
A young boy, barely ten, clutched Liora's hand, eyes wide with fear and awe. "My sister⦠they took her last week," he whispered.
Liora knelt, gripping his shoulders. "We'll find her. Stay close to Selene. Trust me, we'll get her back."
From the rooftops, they could see the northern gates, heavily guarded. The Dominion was already responding to Kairo's defiance, sending reinforcements, and trying to stamp out the sparks of rebellion before they ignited fully. Every street seemed alive with tension; every shadow might hide a soldierāor an ally.
Selene's voice cut through the night. "Remember, the city sees Kairo's fire. That fire gives us a chance. Every move we make now can tip the balance."
Liora's grip on her blade tightened, determination hardening in her chest. "Then we move. Not just to strikeābut to show the people there is another way. A way of hope, not fear."
The night swallowed them as they slipped through the alleys, freeing captives, sabotaging supply depots, and leaving messages for the city to see. The rebellion was no longer whispers in the darkāit was a tide rising, fueled by the boy who commanded fire, and the women who fought to keep that fire from consuming everything.
