Chapter 40: Betrayal in the Ranks

The Red Hands' lair, once a sanctuary of whispered plans and strategic discussions, now thrummed with unease. News of Kairo's triumphs had spread like wildfire, but the fires of hope had also exposed cracks within the rebellion. Suspicion hung in the air heavier than smoke, and even familiar faces seemed shadowed with doubt.

Liora crouched over a worn map, tracing the narrow alleys of the northwest district. Selene leaned close, eyes scanning the dimly lit room. "Something's off," she muttered. "Movements aren't matching our intelligence. Supplies are vanishing faster than expected, and the Dominion seems to anticipate our every strike."

A whisper of movement caught Liora's attention. One of the younger Red Hands, a wiry boy named Jaren, had lingered too long near the supply caches, glancing over his shoulder as if expecting someone. Something in his manner betrayed guilt. Liora's pulse quickened, instincts honed over years of survival screaming that betrayal often wore a familiar face.

"Selene," Liora whispered, "watch the exits. I need to speak with him alone."

Minutes later, she cornered Jaren in a shadowed hallway. "Why are you warning the Dominion?" she demanded, voice low but firm. "Do you realize what you've risked? Lives. The entire city."

Jaren's eyes darted to the floor, then back at her. "I—I had no choice," he stammered. "They threatened my family. They said if I didn't give information, they'd burn everything I love."

Liora's jaw tightened. Betrayal stung, but understanding gnawed deeper. Every decision had a cost, and every sacrifice cut differently. "You chose survival over loyalty," she said, voice trembling with both anger and sorrow. "But Kairo's fire isn't just about strength. It's about choices, Jaren. You've chosen poorly."

Selene stepped closer, her presence cold and unwavering. "We can't let fear dictate the rebellion. He must be punished, or the rest will think betrayal is acceptable."

Liora studied the boy's trembling form. Exile seemed merciful, but the Dominion would hunt him immediately, risking their network. A final decision had to be made. "We strip him of rank. He leaves tonight. No contact with the rebellion. If he survives… perhaps he'll understand the cost of treachery."

Jaren nodded, tears streaking his soot-stained face. "I understand," he whispered.

The city outside roared with the distant clash of battle, fire and smoke painting the streets in ominous gold and crimson. Liora and Selene returned to the lair, silence stretching between them. Trust had been broken, and the weight of responsibility pressed heavier than any chain or blade.

Selene's voice cut through the tension. "The Dominion watches, the city waits, and Kairo leads from the shadows. But tonight, we learned that the greatest danger isn't just the enemy—it's the doubt that festers within."

Liora nodded, eyes fixed on the flickering map. Every shadow, every whisper, and every choice mattered now. The fire of rebellion burned brighter, but the threat of betrayal lingered, reminding them that even in hope, darkness could grow unseen.
