Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Leveraging Influence

Upon hearing this, everyone couldn't care less about mocking Dirk Carter; they all became nervously busy.

Stillwater County is a large county.

Aside from County Head Dylan Tate, there are six deputy county heads.

Among the six deputy county heads, two are members of the County Committee Standing Committee.

One is the Executive Deputy County Head Sherman Summers.

The other is Shane Vincent who has emerged in recent years.

In the officialdom, every carrot has its pit.

With Dylan Tate's death, it means that Shane Vincent is very likely to take another step forward.

At the entrance of the Health Bureau.

Delilah Goodman, along with two deputy directors and other party members, were already at the door to greet them.

This year, Shane Vincent is 48 years old, with the most noticeable feature being a large bald patch on his head, where the few remaining hairs have absorbed most of the nutrients and have taken up the responsibility of covering the scalp.

It can be seen.

Shane Vincent still has a "fondness" for Delilah Goodman.

He held her hand and did not let go.

After all, it was an investigation trip.

Surrounded by the main leaders of the Health Bureau.

Shane Vincent began his inspection of the Health Bureau.

When he walked into the large office.

All the staff stood up, bursting into thunderous applause, each with a radiant expression, eagerly shaking hands with Shane Vincent.

Just as Victor Ford squeezed out of the crowd, wanting to make an impression in front of Shane Vincent.

Shane Vincent turned to Delilah Goodman and asked, "Director Goodman, is there a comrade named Dirk Carter in your bureau?"

"Yes!"

Delilah Goodman's expression slightly changed.

But she still nodded and said.

"Oh, then where is Comrade Dirk Carter? I want to meet him."

Shane Vincent said.

"Deputy County Head, there he is, Dirk Carter."

Seeing an opportunity to shine, Victor Ford pointed towards the back of the crowd.

Everyone's gaze gathered on Dirk Carter.

With the deputy county head personally coming for him, it seems Dirk Carter is really going to be in trouble.

Just as Victor Ford thought this.

A smile immediately appeared on Shane Vincent's face, and before Dirk Carter could come over, he proactively reached out his hand and walked towards him.

Under everyone's watchful eyes.

The two stood in the corner, chatting warmly.

From the posture, it seemed less like a leader talking with a subordinate and more akin to a senior chatting with a junior.

About three or four minutes later.

Shane Vincent patted Dirk Carter on the shoulder, suddenly raising his voice, "Young man, work hard, I believe in you."

Leaving these words behind.

Shane Vincent turned and left.

One would have thought there would be more content next, but upon stepping out of the office, Shane Vincent claimed an urgent county government matter required him back immediately, hurriedly getting into the car, leaving people a bit confused as he drove away.

The entire inspection lasted less than ten minutes.

Half of the time was spent on Dirk Carter.

As soon as Shane Vincent left.

Everyone's hearts started to buzz.

It was clear to everyone that Shane Vincent had specifically come for Dirk Carter.

People's minds began churning with schemes.

Especially Fordham Wright, now anxious and a bit frantic.

"Director Wynn, what should we do? Today... it's all Victor Ford's fault; he said Dirk Carter would definitely face troubles, who knew he had Deputy County Head Vincent behind him, I had never heard of their connection before, plus who doesn't know about Dylan Tate and Deputy County Head Vincent's discord..."

Speaking these words, Fordham Wright felt a bit aggrieved.

Winston Perry sighed.

He said, "You've been with me for so many years, still can't keep your cool, now what can be done? Of course, you should apologize."

Fordham Wright certainly found it hard to apologize.

But after thinking carefully, he felt that apologizing was safer.

Five minutes later.

He knocked on Dirk Carter's office door.

"Section Chief Dirk, busy?"

Fordham Wright forced a smile and asked.

"Ah, Director Wright? Come, have a seat."

As if that incident never happened, Dirk Carter not only didn't hold a grudge, but warmly greeted him, picking up a cup to pour water for Fordham Wright.

Such a demeanor from Dirk Carter relaxed Fordham Wright a bit.

"Section Chief Dirk, about today's key issue, I thought about it after going back, and felt..."

Before he could continue.

He was interrupted by Dirk Carter.

Dirk Carter smilingly said, "I should call you Sister Wright; it's not your fault, you were used, it's good if you've figured out the stakes in this."

"Used?"

Fordham Wright was momentarily unresponsive.

Surprised, he asked.

Dirk Carter pretended to be surprised, "Sister Wright, you haven't figured it out yet? When we are at odds, who benefits the most?"

Seeing Fordham Wright still looking somewhat bewildered.

Dirk Carter continued, "When two tigers fight, one is bound to get hurt; if I fall, who would be most pleased?"

"Victor Ford."

Fordham Wright responded without hesitation.

Dirk Carter nodded, then continued, "And if Sister Wright steps down, who in our unit is most likely to take your place?"

"That's obvious, it's Lily Sullivan, that vixen..."

She didn't say the last word.

Given that Lily Sullivan is Dirk Carter's "ex-girlfriend."

Saying this much.

No need for Dirk Carter to spell it out.

After all, who in the office doesn't know that Victor Ford and Lily Sullivan have gotten together.

"Damn, Victor Ford set me up, Brother Dirk, it's all my muddle-headedness, Sister's apologizing to you, I can't swallow this, I'll settle this with Victor Ford right now!"

Fordham Wright is quick-tempered.

And not much of a schemer.

The type to take swift action.

Just as she was about to stand up.

Dirk Carter was pulling her back.

And said, "Sister Wright, you go to Victor Ford, would he admit it? When he turns the tables on you, wouldn't you be uncomfortable?"

"Am I to swallow this silently then?"

"Of course Sister Wright shouldn't be at a loss, Victor Ford you can't touch, but someone you can."

"You're saying... Lily Sullivan?"

Fordham Wright asked.

Dirk Carter nonchalantly said, "Isn't Glenwood Township Health Clinic still vacant? Once Lily moves, Sister Wright naturally won't have any threats."

"Great idea, truly a great idea, Brother Dirk, Sister thanks you, I'll handle this right away."

Finishing up.

Fordham Wright excitedly left.

Having done all this, could it be that Dirk Carter just wants to send Lily Sullivan away?

Of course not.

Inviting Shane Vincent to find him was to "borrow influence."

When others mistakenly believe he has Shane Vincent as a backer, those on the fence will sway back to him again.

He knows Lily Sullivan's character too well.

If she is indeed transferred to Glenwood Township Health Clinic, an impoverished backcountry, she is bound to cause a ruckus with Victor Ford.

If Victor Ford defends Lily Sullivan, then he's thoroughly offended Fordham Wright; offending her is no big deal, but Fordham Wright's husband, Avery Childers, works in the County Committee Organization Department; if Victor Ford doesn't defend her, Lily Sullivan, being no pushover, will definitely cause an upheaval in the Health Bureau. Regardless of the outcome, Victor Ford will have a hard time.

Currently, Dirk Carter is being investigated by a task force.

As long as this case isn't concluded, he is at risk every day.

Any small disturbance could impact him.

He must quickly rid himself of Victor Ford, this sticky trouble.

Having someone else help with it is naturally better than doing it himself.

After dealing with this matter.

Dirk Carter brought an envelope to Director Goodman's office.

Upon seeing these photographs, Delilah Goodman blushed furiously.

Anxiously and frantically, she locked the photos in a drawer, cautiously asking, "Have you seen them?"

"I have, I need to verify if the photos are real, but rest assured, only I have seen them."

Dirk Carter replied.

If he hadn't said it, it would have been better.

Saying it made Delilah Goodman's face even redder.

Even her breathing became rapid.

Thinking that all her unrestrained actions were seen by the man in front of her, her heart started racing in betrayal.
