Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: A New Crisis

The case happened a year ago.

It ostensibly has nothing to do with Dylan Tate's suicide now.

But after Dylan Tate's death,

This case is bound to be revisited.

Because the victim of this case was named Rardin Grant, and during his lifetime, he was the driver for the Stillwater County government, and also Dylan Tate's personal driver.

Was Rardin Grant murdered?

No!

He was involved in a traffic accident.

On the night of the incident, at eleven o'clock, Rardin Grant was driving the Municipal Government's car, parked on a remote country road.

A dump truck crashed into him from behind.

It goes without saying.

Under such impact, Rardin Grant died instantly.

After the accident, the dump truck driver said that there were no street lights, and he was distracted while driving, which led to the accident.

Afterwards,

He was sentenced to two years in prison for causing a traffic accident.

He is still serving his sentence in prison.

And during Rardin Grant's autopsy, it was also found that his body contained a large amount of alcohol, reaching the state of drunken driving.

At that time, he was most likely resting on the roadside.

Later, the police also verified with the drivers' team that Rardin Grant had no tasks that night, meaning he was using the government vehicle privately, causing the accident after drinking, which had nothing to do with the government.

This case,

was later closed as a traffic accident.

But why would a case like this make Dirk Carter feel a sense of crisis after Dylan Tate's death?

Because on the night of the incident,

Dirk Carter saw Rardin Grant, and it happened at Dylan Tate's house.

One is Dylan Tate's adoptive son, the other is his personal driver; surely they were familiar with each other.

Since starting work,

Dirk Carter rented his own place and moved out, rarely returning to Dylan Tate's house.

Coincidentally, the temperature dropped that night.

Dirk Carter thought of returning to Dylan Tate's house to get some warm clothing.

After opening the door as usual, he was surprised to find Dylan Tate drinking with Rardin Grant.

A county mayor having drinks with a driver, even Dirk Carter found the situation strange, but he didn't ask much, since Dylan Tate was just his adoptive father.

Looking back now,

Dylan Tate's emotions were not quite right back then.

He seemed angry that Dirk Carter hadn't called ahead to get the clothes.

He not only barred him from entering but also confiscated his key on the spot, telling him never to come back again.

Just like that,

Dirk Carter was driven out.

The next morning,

He heard at work about Rardin Grant's incident.

Although he felt something was off, upon reflection, it seemed like just a car accident after all. A county mayor wouldn't go to such lengths to get rid of a driver, the logic didn't hold up.

After the event,

Rardin Grant's parents went to the county police to demand an explanation.

They said their son never drank and was a very honest person who would never go out with a government car without permission.

They even insisted that Dylan Tate had killed Rardin Grant because he had said at home that he knew a big secret about County Mayor Tate.

Without evidence,

The police did not accept the case.

Unconvinced, Rardin Grant's parents went to the Municipal Party Committee to petition.

The result was inconclusive.

Later, because of their bypassing protocol in the petition, they were detained for fifteen days.

Now with Dylan Tate's sudden suicide by jumping off a building,

Rardin Grant's parents will surely bring up this issue again.

When Dylan Tate was in power, no one believed he would harm Rardin Grant, but now that something has happened to Dylan Tate, all suspicions have a chance of being true.

If they dig into this case,

the fact that Dirk Carter saw Rardin Grant that night can't be covered up.

After all, he had taken a taxi, and familiar people in the community had greeted him.

Even if the case has nothing to do with him, now with the dead unable to testify, he couldn't clear his name even if he jumped into The Yellow River.

The law emphasizes innocence until proven guilty, but in the officialdom, even a trace of rumor can ruin someone's career. If he can't keep his job at the health bureau, all his years of effort would be for nothing.

Considering this,

Dirk Carter felt a rush of irritability.

The earlier heat subsided entirely.

He went home and thought through the entire matter again, still sensing major problems.

In this case, Dylan Tate indeed seemed suspicious. After all, he saw Rardin Grant that night, but this was not reflected in the later case disclosure.

Either the police proactively excluded this situation,

or Dylan Tate lied.

Having lived with Dylan Tate for many years, spending most time in school, Dirk Carter still firmly believed that he was not someone who would kill.

What he feared came to pass.

The next afternoon, after anxiously staying until near the end of work, he received a call from Lauren Radford, asking him to visit the special investigation team.

As soon as he stepped out of the car at the Anti-Corruption Bureau's entrance,

Dirk Carter saw Lauren Radford sending off an elderly couple to a car, solemnly saying as they left, "Don't worry, we'll get to the bottom of your son's case."

Although Dirk Carter didn't recognize the couple,

he could almost be sure they were Rardin Grant's parents, meaning the case had indeed been brought back up.

His biggest crisis had arrived.

"You, come with me!"

After sending off that couple, Lauren Radford said to Dirk Carter.

"Sister, what does the special investigation team want with me?"

Dirk Carter asked, feigning a playful tone.

Lauren Radford looked around, seeing no one, she whispered, "I don't really know. It's a police officer from the city who wants to see you, also the deputy leader of our special investigation team."

"The city police are involved too?"

A chill went down Dirk Carter's spine as he asked.

Lauren Radford nodded, "Things are slightly complicated. Dylan Tate might also be involved in a murder case."

Exactly as he had anticipated.

Though he felt very nervous inside, Dirk Carter presented a calm exterior. These people in the Anti-Corruption Bureau are astute; any slip and he might become a primary subject of investigation.

Following Lauren Radford,

Dirk Carter came to an office door.

"Go in yourself, and remember, don't say the wrong things."

At this point, Dirk Carter was still a ticking time bomb to Lauren Radford.

She had to remind him.

"Rest assured, sister, can the younger brother harm you?"

With this reassurance,

Lauren Radford felt somewhat relieved.

With anxiety, he knocked on the door.

A voice inside responded, "Come in!"

A woman's voice?

Even the deputy leader is a woman?

Dirk Carter didn't have time for idle thoughts and simply walked in.

A very clean office.

There was a desk and a set of sofas.

A woman in a police uniform was sitting upright at the desk, burying her head in writing something.

"Have a seat."

The woman didn't lift her head, speaking straightforwardly.

Dirk Carter sat down on the sofa.

At this moment, the policewoman put down her pen, got up, and asked, "Want something to drink? Tea or coffee?"

"It's you?"

Seeing the face of the policewoman, Dirk Carter was so shocked that his jaw almost dropped.
