There was a pause…..calm, calculated before Carl's voice came through again, this time smoother than usual. "I hope it was worth it."
Dominic exhaled a sharp breath, eyes narrowing at the sound. "It is," he said, his tone steady but cold. "Every bit of it."
"Good." The voice on the other end smiled through the line. "Then take care of my sister for me."
Dominic , lowered the bottle slowly. A faint smirk tugged at his lips, but there was no humor in it just realization.
"You can drop the act," he said quietly. "You're not the real Carl."
There was silence. Then the voice chuckled deep, deliberate, and sinister.
"I had a hunch you found out," the imposter said, amusement dripping through every word. "That's why you left, isn't it?"
Dominic's grip on the phone tightened. His jaw flexed. "You made it easy."
"Oh, come on," the voice teased. "Give me some credit. The real Carl's good but I'm better."
