Chapter 66 - can't let you go

As they walked into the kitchen, Taejoon's eyes sparkled with excitement. "Okay, time to get cooking!" he said, heading straight for the fridge.

Han trailed behind him, looking adorably clueless. "Uh, what do you need me to do?" he asked, eyeing the cooking utensils warily.

Taejoon pulled out a carton of eggs and handed one to Han. "Can you break this egg for me?"

Han took the egg, looking at it like it was a puzzle. "Uh, I don't know how to break an egg," he admitted, his face scrunched up in concentration.

Taejoon raised an eyebrow. "You've never cooked before, have you?"

Han shook his head, looking sheepish. "Nope. I've been living off takeout and microwave meals."

Taejoon chuckled and walked over to stand behind Han, wrapping his arms around him. "Well, let me show you how it's done," he whispered, his breath tickling Han's ear.

Han's heart skipped a beat as Taejoon's warm body pressed against his. "I think I'll just watch," he said, trying to sound nonchalant.

Taejoon chuckled and gently guided Han's hands, showing him how to crack the egg. As they worked together, Han couldn't help but look at taejoon, his face turn completely red.

The moment was ruined As Taejoon's phone rang, he glanced at the screen and his expression changed. "Sorry, Han, I need to take this," he said, his voice a bit curt.

Han's eyes narrowed slightly as he saw the name "Chris" flash on the screen. "Your ex?" he asked, his tone neutral.

Taejoon nodded, his jaw clenched. "Yeah. I'll just...take it real quick."

Han nodded understandingly, and Taejoon answered the call, his voice cool and detached. "What do you want, Chris?"

As Taejoon listened to Chris's voice on the other end, his expression grew more and more tense. Han watched him, his eyes fixed on Taejoon's profile, wondering what was going on...

Han tried not to listen in on the conversation, but Taejoon's ex's words were impossible to ignore. "I miss you so much, Taejoon...I was stupid to let you go...I want you back," Chris said, his voice filled with longing.

Han's heart sank as he heard the words, and he couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy. He busied himself with cracking eggs into the bowl, trying to focus on the task at hand.

But he couldn't shake off the feeling of unease that had settled in his stomach. He glanced over at Taejoon, who was standing with his back to him, his shoulders tense.

Han's mind began to wander, wondering how Taejoon would respond to Chris's declaration. Would he still feel the same way about him, or would his ex's words stir up old feelings?

Taejoon's voice was firm as he told Chris, "Look, I'm busy. I don't have time to talk." Without waiting for a response, he ended the call and slipped his phone back into his pocket.

As he turned to walk back to Han, he noticed Han's focused expression. Han was still cracking eggs, his movements precise and controlled.

Taejoon approached him, a gentle smile on his face. "Hey, sorry about that. Where were we?" he asked, trying to resume their earlier conversation.

But Han didn't look up, his eyes fixed on the eggs. "Just...just making breakfast," he said, his voice neutral.

Taejoon sensed something was off, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it. "Han, is everything okay?" he asked, his tone softening.

Han remained silent, continuing to crack eggs without responding.

Taejoon's instincts told him that Han was upset, but he didn't know why..

Taejoon's brow furrowed in concern as Han continued to ignore him. He gently took the egg from Han's hand and placed it on the counter. "Han, talk to me. What's going on?" he asked, his voice low and gentle.

Han's eyes finally met Taejoon's, and for a moment, they just stared at each other. Taejoon could see a flicker of emotion in Han's eyes, but he couldn't quite read it.

"Han, please," Taejoon said, his voice filled with concern. "Tell me what's wrong."

Han's expression remained neutral, but his voice was laced with a hint of coolness. "Nothing's wrong, Taejoon. Just drop it, okay?"

Taejoon's eyes searched Han's face, trying to understand what was going on. He could tell Han was upset, but he was shutting him out. Taejoon took a step closer, his voice softening. "Han, I think I know what this is about. It's about Chris, isn't it?"

Han's expression didn't change, but Taejoon saw a flicker of something in his eyes. Taejoon reached out, gently brushing a strand of hair behind Han's ear. "There's nothing between Chris and me, Han. He's my ex, and that's it. You have nothing to worry about."

Han's gaze dropped, and for a moment, Taejoon thought he saw a glimmer of vulnerability. But when Han looked up, his mask was firmly in place. "I'm not worried," Han said, his voice even.

Taejoon let out a deep sigh, his shoulders sagging slightly as he reached out and took Han's hands in his. His eyes locked onto Han's, filled with a mix of vulnerability and longing.

"Han, I need to be honest with you," Taejoon said, his voice laced with emotion. "It's true, I still have feelings for Chris. The memories, the emotions, they don't just disappear. But I'm not going back to that past. I've closed that chapter."

Taejoon's gaze intensified, his words pouring out in a heartfelt confession. "And I can tell you're still not over me yet, despite everything. You deserve someone so much more worthy than me, someone who can love you without the weight of my baggage."

Taejoon's voice cracked, his eyes filled with a deep sadness. "But the thought of you with someone else...it kills me. I know I'm not good enough for you, but I don't want to lose you to someone who can give you what I can't."

In that moment, Taejoon's mask slipped, revealing the raw emotions beneath. "I don't know what the future holds, Han. All I know is that being with you feels right, even if it doesn't make sense."
