Chapter 9 - Chapter 09: The Predator's Fall

The wolf came low, driving at Rylan's knees before rising toward his throat. Lyra pulled Elara clear while he gave ground toward a narrow gap between two trunks. He could not stop the animal's full weight in the open.

He let the nearer trunk cover his left side and gathered Qi into his right arm. The tree forced the wolf to turn its head as it lunged. That was the moment he struck.

As the Dire Wolf closed the distance, Rylan unleashed a concentrated burst of spiritual force. It wasn't a flashy technique, but concentrated Qi. His palm connected with the beast's jaw with a sickening crack that echoed through the forest. The impact sent a shockwave through the wolf's head, twisting its powerful body mid-air.

The Dire Wolf, mid-howl, crashed to the ground with a thud, its limbs twitching for a moment before falling limp. A faint wisp of its beast essence, tinged with a predatory spiritual energy, drifted from its body and was almost imperceptibly absorbed by Rylan.

Rylan felt the familiar, subtle hum in his Dantian. Though not as significant as dual cultivation, this combat essence was a welcome bonus. He looked down at the lifeless Dire Wolf, its formidable presence extinguished in a single, decisive strike.

Lyra kept her knife in hand until she had checked both sides of the path. Elara stood behind her, breathing too quickly. Rylan waited for each to answer before he stepped away from the carcass.

"Are you both alright?" Rylan asked, his voice calm, the adrenaline already receding.

Elara nodded and examined a scrape on her sleeve. No bite beneath it. Rylan made himself look at his own arm; the tremor was easing.

Lyra lowered the knife, then remembered Elara and checked her for bites. Only when the girl shook her head did she look back at him. "You knew where to stand."

"I hoped I did." Rylan flexed his fingers. His arm had begun to shake now that it was no longer needed. Lyra noticed; she said nothing about it.

Rylan dismissed the notification and knelt beside the wolf. The village might be able to use most of it, if they could get it home.

Rylan glanced at the System message, then back at Lyra. He walked over to the dead wolf, assessing it. "This will fetch a good price in the nearest town for its pelt and meat," he stated, his tone shifting to a practical one. "Far more than any simple hunting trip from Oakhaven usually yields."

He looked at Lyra, his gaze intense, capturing her full attention. "Lyra, you are resourceful. You work hard. But what does it get you here? Scraps, threats from tax collectors, and dangerous beasts that a normal man cannot face." He swept his hand, indicating the wild path and, implicitly, the mundane village life. "I can offer you more. True security. A path to power that extends beyond the limits of this village, beyond the reach of greedy barons and distant empires."

He paused, letting the weight of his words settle. "You saw what I can do. I do not just clear paths; I can shatter threats. My path is one of ascent, of reclaiming what was lost, and building something greater. Come with me, Lyra. Be a part of this. With your resourcefulness, and my strength, we can carve out a future where you are no longer limited by the mundane, where you truly thrive."

Lyra watched him over the dead wolf. "A future doing what?" she asked. "You've told me what you can stop. That isn't the same thing."

Rylan had intended to impress her. Instead he found himself explaining what he actually wanted: money he controlled, a place that could not be taken from him by a local lord, and enough strength to return to the people who had robbed him.

"And you need herbs for that?"

"Among other things."

"Then you'll need someone who knows which ones are worth carrying."
