Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: The Third Flower

With the shimmering Moonpetal Blossom clutched carefully in Rylan's hand, the descent from Whispering Peak felt less perilous, almost buoyant. Elara and Lyra followed, their earlier weariness replaced by a shared sense of accomplishment. Lyra, in particular, studied the glowing herb with a professional eye, her expression a mix of awe and recognition.

"It's even more vibrant than the texts describe," Lyra murmured, her voice hushed. "This will surely work, Master Rylan. Its spiritual purity... it's incredible."

"Then let's get it home," Rylan said. He adjusted the cloth around the stems so the cut ends would not dry out.

On the descent they found the patrol still bound. Lyra left a warning tied above the hollow and loosened one man's wrist rope enough for him to work free after they were gone. They reached Oakhaven under the first stars, with the three Moonpetal stems still damp in their cloth.

Word of their return, and Rylan's success, spread like wildfire. By the time they reached Elder Kael's home, a small crowd had gathered, Lena at the front, her face a mask of desperate hope.

"Master Rylan! Did you... did you find it?" she cried, rushing forward, her eyes wide with expectation.

Rylan extended his hand, the sapphire-blue glow of the Moonpetal Blossom illuminating his palm. "It is here, Lena. For your mother."

Lena took the herb with both hands and ran to the clinic. Orrin checked the stems, measured the infusion and made her wait while it cooled. Rylan stayed outside the doorway with Lyra, listening to the healer's instructions rather than assuming that finding a plant had already saved a life.

Later, when her mother's fever had begun to fall, Lena found him washing mud from his boots.

"I said I would do anything," she began.

"You didn't," Rylan said. "You asked for a herb."

She looked at him, then sat on the step. They talked about the healing affinity he had noticed and the method through which it might awaken. Lena asked about Lyra, and he answered plainly. He wanted more than one partner; he would not promise exclusivity to obtain her agreement.

"I'll speak to her myself," Lena said.

"You should."

She studied him, then brushed dried mud from his collar. The small, unnecessary touch made him stop thinking about the next stage.

"And what do you want when nobody needs saving?" he asked.

"To be asked that before I'm useful."

He leaned closer. "Then I'll ask again tomorrow."

"My patients come first when they can't wait," she said.

"Even me?"

"Especially when you can."

He smiled at that. She did too, though she made him repeat the condition before giving him her hand. They began with the smallest circulation he could guide, stopping whenever the current felt wrong.

[Voluntary adult partnership established: Lena. Adult partners: 2/3.]

[First-bond milestone: early Qi Condensation. Minor healing affinity; medicinal theory.]

The new current filled Rylan's channels slowly enough for him to remain aware of Lena's hands. He had wanted another breakthrough. He had not expected to be told, quite so firmly, when he would have to wait.

Lena felt warmth gather in her hands. The bond supplied a framework of medicinal knowledge, but when she returned to her mother it was still Orrin who checked the pulse and decided when to offer the next dose. She asked him to teach her.

"I feel... lighter," Lena whispered, her eyes shining with newfound vitality. "And I feel... the warmth in my hands. Like I can help."

"You can," Rylan affirmed, a triumphant glint in his eyes. "You can help greatly."

Lena stayed with her mother. Rylan went back to the well and found Lyra waiting with a bowl of supper. She moved over on the step to make room, and he sat close enough for their knees to touch.
