Chapter 117: Learning the Yin Seal
The Hokage's Office, Mission Hall.
Hoshikawa scanned the series of missions on the bulletin board and asked, "Sensei, what rank of mission should we take?"
Tsunade pointed nonchalantly. "A newly formed ninja team can only accept D-rank missions."
Hoshikawa was slightly surprised. He knew this was canon, but he was astonished that Tsunade would actually follow the rules.
"Basic missions are so you new graduates can quickly get used to being a ninja," Tsunade said, seeing the gears turning in Hoshikawa 's head.
"Then why were all the missions I did before B-rank or higher?" Hoshikawa asked, blinking.
"Because you weren't an official ninja back then," Tsunade replied, pausing before adding, "Besides, if you're doing basic missions, I'll have time to teach you."
"So that's the real reason, isn't it?" Hoshikawa understood.
"Quit blabbering and pick a mission," Tsunade said, raising a hand and knocking him on the head.
"This one looks good." After a moment of browsing, Hoshikawa 's eyes lit up. "Help Cat Granny finish her Paws-itive Encyclopedia."
In short, it was a mission to capture ninja cats and have them leave their paw prints in the book. It was a D-rank, but the difficulty wasn't low. Ninja cats were incredibly fast and agile, so it would take some effort to catch them.
"Sounds fine," Tsunade said after a moment's thought.
Hoshikawa stepped up and, after a brief conversation with the staff, was given the mission scroll.
"I still haven't congratulated you on graduating," Tsunade said, a sudden thought occurring to her as a smile touched her lips.
"Is there a prize for graduating?" Hoshikawa asked casually.
"A prize, you say? How about I pat you on the head?" Tsunade's eyes twinkled as she reached out.
Hoshikawa tilted his head, dodging her hand.
"What's with you, growing so tall, kid?" Tsunade's expression hardened, a hint of annoyance in her voice. Her height was 163cm, and Hoshikawa was already 160cm.
"It just means my sensei raised me well." A brilliant smile spread across Hoshikawa 's face.
Tsunade looked at him, a flash of wistfulness in her eyes. He's all grown up now. And with a face like that, who knows how many girls he's going to charm? Even she had to admit he was handsome.
"Sensei?" Hoshikawa waved a hand in front of her.
"Let's go see the old man," Tsunade said, snapping out of her daze.
"What do we need the Hokage for?" Hoshikawa asked, following her upstairs, utterly confused.
"You'll see soon enough," Tsunade answered, then kicked the door open.
Hiruzen Sarutobi jumped in his seat, quickly hiding his Redo of Healer manga.
"Did you get a new door again?" Tsunade raised an eyebrow. "It felt a little different when I kicked it today."
"Could you focus on something else?" Hiruzen couldn't help but complain.
"Of course I can." Tsunade held out a hand. "I have two new students. Give me Grand-Grandfather's Water Release scrolls."
"For Kurenai Yūhi?" Hiruzen asked, glancing at Hoshikawa .
"Yeah." Tsunade nodded. "Her talent for Water Release won't disgrace Grand-Grandfather's legacy."
"Just make your own decision," Hiruzen said, not objecting.
"Well, you are the Hokage. I should at least let you know before I steal so many jutsu," Tsunade said with a chuckle.
"You remember I'm the Hokage?" Hiruzen's eye twitched as he retorted.
"Later!" Tsunade laughed, grabbing Hoshikawa and running off. She naturally knew where the Water Release scrolls were kept.
"Sensei," Hoshikawa said, a question coming to mind. "Isn't there a copy at home?"
"No," Tsunade said as she browsed the jutsu scrolls in the storage room. "Nobody learns Water Release, so there's no need for one."
"I see." Hoshikawa stepped forward, took the scroll, and said, "Then I'll learn it too."
"You already have Lightning and Fire Release, don't you?" Tsunade's tone became more serious. "Don't bite off more than you can chew."
"I think it's pretty easy," Hoshikawa said with a light cough. "Besides, if the Hokage can master all five, so can I."
"Kid, are you listening to what you're saying?" Tsunade glared at him. "Do you think the old man has poor talent?"
"I didn't mean that," Hoshikawa quickly shook his head.
"We'll talk about it after you learn the Yin Seal," Tsunade said, putting away the scrolls.
"Sensei, are you finally going to teach me the Yin Seal?" Hoshikawa 's heart leaped.
The benefits of the Yin Seal were obvious the ability to store chakra alone was something most ninja could only dream of. In addition, it offered eternal youth, instant healing, enhanced strength, and kept the body in its prime. Of course, this required the combined use of the Yin Seal: Release and the Strength of a Hundred Seal.
"I didn't teach you before because your body wasn't fully developed," Tsunade said, looking him up and down before rubbing her chin. "But now... it looks about right."
What is this pervert behavior? Hoshikawa followed Tsunade out of the Hokage's Office.
The Uchiha Clan's Compound
Shisui Uchiha returned to the Uchiha clan's territory. He recalled his sparring match with Sakumo Hatake, marveling at the legendary White Fang of Konoha. Even with Asuma and Shizune, the three of them couldn't land a single blow on him. Shisui's most proficient skill, swordsmanship, was full of holes in front of him. He was excited for the future lessons. With Sakumo's guidance, his swordsmanship would surely improve.
"Shisui." Just then, a familiar voice called out. Shisui instinctively looked up. It was Fugaku Uchiha, who seemed to have come early just to wait for him.
"Clan Head," Shisui said, stepping forward respectfully.
"Who is your team leader?" Fugaku asked, getting straight to the point.
As a major clan in Konoha, the Uchiha had certain privileges, or rather, flexible rules. After Shisui graduated, Fugaku could have simply had an Uchiha jōnin become his team leader. From their perspective, non-Uchiha ninjas were just dead weight. However, with Fugaku's permission, Shisui had followed the normal graduation process.
"Sakumo Hatake," Shisui replied.
"He's your sensei?" Fugaku's face showed surprise. In Konoha, Sakumo Hatake's fame was no less than the Legendary Sannin. In other words, he could be considered a top-tier ninja, second only to the Hokage. Fugaku fell into thought. He knew Hiruzen Sarutobi, and this move had to have a deeper meaning. Is this a gesture of goodwill to the Uchiha?
"Who are your teammates?" Fugaku continued to ask.
"Asuma Sarutobi and Shizune," Shisui answered.
"Asuma?" Fugaku's heart trembled. He was now certain that Hiruzen was making a gesture of goodwill to the Uchiha clan. This was a good sign. After all, Fugaku didn't want to start a rebellion.
"What about Obito?" Fugaku asked, relieved.
"His sensei is Minato Namikaze," Shisui answered truthfully.
"What?" Fugaku was surprised yet again. Minato Namikaze was Jiraiya's student, which meant Obito Uchiha had been brought into the Hokage's direct line of students.
"Excellent." A smile appeared on Fugaku's face. Hiruzen Sarutobi's sincerity made him quite happy. He should repay this gesture by keeping a tight leash on the hardliners in the clan.
"It's a shame," Fugaku said, shaking his head. "It would have been even more perfect if you and Obito had swapped sensei." Sakumo was good, but he wasn't a part of the Hokage's lineage. As for Obito, his skills and talent were far inferior to Shisui's. It was unlikely he would ever become Hokage. The Uchiha clan has wanted a Hokage for a long, long time. Fugaku sighed softly, thinking of Danzō Shimura.
A new day.
"You two, be sure to listen to Tsunade-sama, okay?" Shinku Yūhi said with a wide smile. Ever since he found out Tsunade was Kurenai's team leader, he had been in a great mood. He described it in two words: "ancestral glory." He felt that the day the Yūhi clan became a major clan was not far off.
"You're being a nag!" Kurenai complained. "You've said that a million times already!"
Hoshikawa understood Shinku. After all, it was hard for a normal ninja to get ahead in the ninja world. In the later stages of the story, it became a world dominated by clans and bloodlines.
"Let's go, Hoshikawa !" Kurenai grabbed his hand, a joyful smile on her face.
"That little punk!" Shinku's smile froze when he saw that.
"Hoshikawa , what do you think Tsunade-sensei will teach me?" Kurenai asked excitedly.
"The Second Hokage's Water Release," Hoshikawa said, pausing. "You'll be the Second Hokage's student by proxy."
"Wow!" Kurenai's eyes suddenly lit up. "Doesn't that make me the Hokage's peer?"
"In theory, yes," Hoshikawa said, thinking it over.
"Then... what should you call me?" Kurenai turned around and blocked his path, a playful smile on her face.
Hoshikawa reached out and took her face in his hands, rubbing her cheeks vigorously.
"What... what are you doing?" Kurenai felt the warmth on her face and her heart fluttered. She instinctively lowered her head, not daring to look him in the eye.
"Just bringing you back to reality," Hoshikawa said, a hint of a smile on his lips. "Mmm, your cheeks are pretty soft."
Kurenai was flustered, her face visibly turning red. She quickly turned around and stammered, "Tsu... Tsunade-sensei is probably waiting for us. We... we should hurry!"
How cute. Hoshikawa followed her.
A little while later, they arrived at Tsunade's house.
"Hoshikawa , Kurenai." Rin, who had arrived earlier, quickly greeted them.
"Good morning, Rin," Kurenai said, a big smile on her face.
"You seem really happy today," Rin said, slightly surprised.
"Oh... it's because I'm going to learn ninjutsu from Tsunade-sensei," Kurenai said, her face a little red. She quickly changed the subject. "Aren't you happy?"
"I am, too," Rin said with a gentle smile. "I've always dreamed of being a medical-ninja, and now I can finally make it happen."
"Why do you want to be a medical-ninja?" Kurenai asked with interest.
"I don't want to see my comrades get hurt," Rin said after some thought.
"You're so kind, Rin," Kurenai said, unable to stop herself from praising her.
"No, I'm not," Rin said, smiling shyly.
"Why aren't you going inside?" Kurenai asked, pointing at the door.
"Tsunade-sensei isn't awake yet, so I didn't want to bother her," Rin explained.
"Don't indulge her," Hoshikawa said, taking out a key and walking toward the door. "She's a person who needs to be..."
"Needs to be what?" The door suddenly opened, and a stone-faced Tsunade asked.
"...handled seriously," Hoshikawa quickly changed his tone.
"I'm not going to keep you as a student if you talk behind my back," Tsunade said with a dissatisfied humph.
"Then... who's going to cook for you?" Hoshikawa asked, amused. "What do you want for breakfast?"
"Pork ramen," Tsunade said, glaring at him.
Kurenai and Rin exchanged glances. They didn't seem like a sensei and a student at all.
"Have you two eaten?" Tsunade asked, looking at them.
"We have," Kurenai and Rin replied.
"From now on, you don't have to. Just come here and Hoshikawa will cook for you," Tsunade said, walking over and handing them two scrolls. "We'll start with your lessons while we have time." Rin would learn medical ninjutsu, and Kurenai would learn Water Release. While Tsunade wasn't a master of Water Release herself, her vast knowledge and experience would be more than enough to guide them.
"Sensei, your ramen's ready," Hoshikawa 's voice called out half an hour later.
"Keep practicing," Tsunade instructed before walking into the living room. She sat down at the table and casually tossed a scroll to Hoshikawa . It was the Yin Seal.
Hoshikawa opened the scroll and began to read. The Yin Seal, originating from the Uzumaki clan, was a combination of sealing jutsu and medical ninjutsu. First, one had to use a sealing jutsu to create a "chakra reservoir" on their forehead.
Once the reservoir was full, the first stage of the Yin Seal was complete. The second part was the application of medical ninjutsu in other words, learning to precisely control one's chakra to keep the body in an optimal state.
In the original story, Sakura Haruno took about three years to learn it. Hoshikawa had expected to take three years as well, but after getting the C-rank "Prodigy Genin" title, he figured he could cut that time in half, especially since it increased his chakra capacity by 50%.
"Let's go, we're going cat-catching," Tsunade said, standing up after finishing her ramen.
They met Cat Granny at the ninja tool shop and were given the Paws-itive Encyclopedia. The next step was to go to the uninhabited area and catch the cats to get their paw prints.
"Rin, Kurenai, this mission is for you two," Tsunade said, stopping Hoshikawa . "You're not allowed to use ninjutsu, but you can channel chakra to the soles of your feet." This was a chakra control exercise. Hoshikawa immediately understood. It was no different from water walking or tree climbing, but with a higher difficulty.
"Now, I'll teach you the Yin Seal." Tsunade ignored Kurenai and Rin and looked at Hoshikawa .
