"Maddy, are you sure you're okay?" I had to ask, since her expression wasn't getting any better. It was the first time I'd seen her this flustered, her fingers tightening faintly around her fork, her shoulders stiff despite her calm tone.
"No, it's nothing… I'm just a little tired." She shrugged, but the movement felt too light, almost forced, her eyes briefly darting away as if to regain control of whatever flickered beneath.
I'd been hoping that sharing stories would get her to talk about the part of her past I was desperate to know. Even though I learned a few things about her that I didn't expect her to share, I also learned something about Allison she'd never mentioned.
The air around us felt heavier the more I pieced things together, like the room itself was holding its breath.
She had never been specific about what happened between her and Maddy — the thing that caused the rift between them.
