Rain was pouring against the windows. Berlin looked wet and cold. I sat on the couch, phone in my hand, staring at Evelyn's name. Should I call her? Could I even say anything?
Then Lukas appeared in the doorway. Wet suit, messy hair, but still somehow perfect. I rolled my eyes. He always looked like he had everything under control.
"You're still awake," he said. Calm. Too calm.
"I couldn't sleep," I said.
He came closer, looking at me like I was a puzzle. "Berlin doesn't forgive mistakes," he said. Then, quietly, "Neither do I."
My stomach twisted. Safe? I didn't feel safe at all.
"I haven't told anyone," I said. "Not Evelyn. Not Dad. Not… you."
He leaned on the window, looking out at the streets. "Secrets," he said. "We all have them. But one mistake here, and it could ruin both of us."
I tried to look brave. Failed. His stare made me nervous.
My phone buzzed. Evelyn. I sent a quick text: Hey… I'm okay. Just… in Berlin. I'll explain later.
She replied fast: Berlin?? How?? Are you safe??
Then Lukas's phone lit up. I saw a message for a second: They're watching. Tonight.
My heart skipped a beat.
"We need to talk," he said, sharp now. "But not here."
Before I could ask why, he grabbed his jacket. "You're coming with me."
I froze. "Wait—what?"
"Do you trust me?" he asked, calm but serious.
I wanted to say no. I wanted to run. But before I could, the door clicked shut.
