Chapter 49: Macross – Invasion

As expected, Major Roy Focker picked up the microphone and said excitedly,

"Hikaru—Ichijyo Hikaru—is that you?"

A voice came from the aircraft—Ichijyo Hikaru's voice.

"That voice—It's Senpai!

Senpai! Long time no see! Long time no see!"

"What do you mean, 'long time no see,' you brat…!"

Major Roy Focker said angrily, while the crowd below laughed at the two of them fooling around.

"Hikaru! Why are you flying so slowly?"

Ichijyo Hikaru answered nonchalantly,

"You're the one who invited me here. Don't be so cold."

Major Roy Focker fumbled and nearly dropped the microphone in frustration, taking a while to fix it before continuing,

"Who told you to come and mess things up with that antique plane?"

Ichijyo Hikaru kept his carefree tone. "It's not dangerous."

Major Roy Focker snapped,

"Get out of the way! You'll always be stuck flying behind me! Don't talk so big."

The two continued bickering nonstop.

Then, Ichijyo Hikaru pushed his old-fashioned craft to accelerate, flying right into the formation of VF-1 Valkyrie fighters.

To overtake them, he even jettisoned some parts from the old craft, using rocket boosters to propel himself forward at high speed.

His outdated aircraft actually surpassed several VF-1 Valkyries.

From the stands, Monty Hill felt that Hikaru had no sense of public responsibility at all—carelessly dumping parts midair.

What if those falling parts hit a VF-1 Valkyrie? Even if they didn't, what if they hit pedestrians or damaged flowers and plants?

Soon, the aerial performance ended. Ichijyo Hikaru's old craft landed near the SDF-1 Macross.

He and Major Roy Focker walked along, talking about something Monty Hill didn't bother to pay attention to.

Whatever Hikaru wanted to do was his own business—not Monty Hill's concern.

After browsing the exhibits for a while, Lynn Minmay's cousin, just like in the anime, became fixated on a vending machine, trying to buy a drink.

"Cola! Cola! I want cola!" he kept chanting.

Lynn Minmay caught hold of him and tried to persuade him,

"Little brother, if you drink that, you'll just have to run to the toilet later. No."

"So urgent! So urgent! I need the toilet!"

The moment he heard "toilet," he immediately said he wanted to go.

Kids were really a handful—especially disobedient brats.

Looking at the boy's antics reminded Monty Hill of his life in his original world.

Sigh… I wonder how my wife and son are doing. My son had just grown out of his bratty phase, and I barely had time to enjoy it before ending up here.

I don't even know if I'll ever get the chance to go back. And even if I did, it would be a mess—this body isn't even mine anymore. The original owner is probably dead.

At that moment, Monty Hill noticed Major Roy Focker and Ichijyo Hikaru watching them from not far away.

As expected of the male and female leads—truly destined to meet no matter the odds, but strangers if fate says so. Is the world's force pushing the plot really that irresistible?

He had already helped Lynn Minmay secure her singer audition acceptance letter.

So the original plot where she went home alone to get her things might not happen now. Still, he would keep an eye on the concert storyline.

I refuse to believe, Hikaru and Minmay, that you can still end up together.

Lynn Minmay took her cousin toward the restroom. Not far away, Major Roy Focker had a lecherous look on his face, staring at Minmay's shapely rear.

If Monty Hill wasn't planning to join the SDF-1 later, he really would have gone over to have a "physical" discussion with the man.

But considering Roy Focker's decent piloting skills—and the fact he wouldn't survive long anyway—Monty Hill decided to let it go.

Soon after, on the main stage, a high-ranking official began his speech.

"…What contributions will the Macross make to humanity?

Once it launches, everyone will see. Please look forward to it!"

Monty Hill knew the answer was mixed—good and bad.

For most people, it would be bad. The Macross's automated systems would destroy the Zentraedi advance fleet's warship, triggering direct conflict with the Zentraedi.

Countless people would die.

But for humanity's future, it was good. Decades later, humans would become the rulers of space.

At that moment, Monty Hill received a notification from Nami.

"Master, according to the probe satellites, a massive green warship has been detected in lunar orbit. It should be the Zentraedi advance fleet's battleship."

Monty Hill gazed deeply at the blue sky.

"So, it's finally coming? Everything begins here."

On the viewing stand, a soldier approached the Macross's captain and whispered something to him. The captain then left with him.

Monty Hill figured the UN Spacy must have also detected the Zentraedi advance fleet's presence.

The official on stage said,

"Now, let me formally introduce the captain of the Macross—Captain Global."

But just as he was about to invite him onstage, Captain Global left without even looking back.

The official shouted in frustration, "Where are you going, Captain?!"

With the captain gone, the speech had to end abruptly.

Monty Hill took Minmay and her uncle's family away from the vicinity of the SDF-1 Macross.

After all, the ship would soon automatically fire its massive heavy particle beam cannon.

It was better to stay far away—being caught in the blast wave wouldn't be pleasant.

Sure enough, before long, the Macross's bow began to slowly open.

A massive beam—two kilometers wide—blasted out. Everything in its path—ocean, land, mountains—was obliterated.

All the seawater in its path vaporized instantly, exposing the dry seabed.

The heavy particle beam cannon ultimately destroyed the Zentraedi advance fleet's Inspection Army gunship that lay in its trajectory.

Even a gunship that was only grazed by the beam's edge was instantly reduced to cosmic dust.

The UN Spacy had never expected that the repaired SDF-1 Macross would contain an automated enemy-engagement trap program.

The moment it detected the Zentraedi advance fleet's signal, it immediately activated this hidden program—and automatically fired the main heavy particle beam cannon directly at the fleet.

That single shot marked the beginning of humanity's first interstellar war—a war of cosmic devastation had just begun.
