"Hold up—how do you even know about Jody?" Miranda asked, the question bursting from her like a sudden realization.
"Connor told me during our dinner that night."
Miranda's forehead creased in confusion. Why would Connor share that with Nolan if he was supposedly committed to some young bride his family had chosen?
"What made him tell you that?" she pressed.
"Because Jody... Collins vanished, and she was carrying his child. He's been searching for her."
"But he called her a liar, among other horrible things. Why the sudden concern now?" Miranda felt heat rising in her chest, irritated that Nolan seemed to be standing up for his friend.
Nolan sighed heavily, running fingers through his dark hair. "I'm not excusing what he said or did. It was completely wrong. But Miranda, he's been torturing himself over this for months. He believes letting her go was the worst decision he's ever made."
