Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Gathering Storm

The Royal Magic Academy's grand hall was unusually silent as the morning sun filtered through stained glass windows. The emergency summons from the Principal had sent ripples of unease through the student body. Whispers spread about the mysterious disturbances near the ancient ruins, and the implications weighed heavily on everyone—especially Kertia.

He sat at a long wooden table alongside Arielle and Tomas, their faces drawn with concern.

"The elders have decided," Arielle said quietly, "a team will be sent to investigate the ruins and contain the threat. They want you to lead it."

Kertia's breath caught. "Me? But I'm still only an apprentice. There are Masters and Experts here far more qualified."

Tomas clenched his fists. "You're the Guardian's reincarnation. No one else has your connection to the dead. You're the best choice."

Kertia swallowed hard. Responsibility settled on his shoulders like a lead cloak. He glanced around the hall and saw the mixture of fear, doubt, and hope in the eyes of his peers.

Preparations began immediately. Kertia's team was small but formidable: Arielle, with her vast knowledge of arcane and elemental magic; Tomas, skilled in runic enchantments; and a seasoned Expert named Doran, a grizzled veteran who specialized in battle magic.

Before their departure, the Principal summoned Kertia to her private chambers.

"You walk a dangerous path," she warned, her voice steady but serious. "The power you wield is ancient and volatile. You must maintain control, or risk losing yourself to the darkness."

Kertia nodded. "I understand."

She handed him a small, rune-inscribed pendant. "This will help shield your mind against corruption. Wear it always."

The journey to the ruins was tense. The landscape shifted from lush forest to desolate plains littered with ancient bones and crumbling monuments.

As they neared the heart of the disturbance, the air grew cold, unnatural. Kertia felt a familiar chill crawling beneath his skin.

Suddenly, from the shadows, skeletal creatures surged forward—twisted amalgamations of bone and dark magic, far larger and more ferocious than anything Kertia had summoned before.

"Prepare yourselves!" Doran barked, drawing his sword that shimmered with enchanted flames.

Battle erupted.

Kertia focused, summoning his own undead guardians to meet the attackers. With a sharp snap of his fingers, his skeletal warriors formed ranks, blocking the assault.

Arielle conjured torrents of water and gusts of wind, disrupting the enemy's advance. Tomas laid runic traps that exploded in bursts of light, scattering the dark creatures.

Despite their efforts, the enemy was relentless.

Kertia felt a surge of power rising within—a deep, raw force that threatened to overwhelm his fragile body.

He gritted his teeth and focused, channeling the Guardian's ancient magic to command a massive skeletal colossus to rise from the earth. The towering giant clashed with the enemy, shattering bones and scattering shadows.

As the dust settled, the team regrouped, panting but victorious.

"Whatever is causing this," Doran said grimly, "it's beyond anything we've seen. This is only the beginning."

Kertia's thoughts raced. The darkness was not just a threat to the academy or the kingdoms—it was a challenge to the very balance between life and death that he was sworn to protect.

His journey was no longer about proving himself. It was about saving the world.

That night, as the team camped near the ruins, Kertia gazed up at the stars, feeling the weight of destiny pressing ever heavier.

"I won't fail," he whispered to the night. "For the dead, for the living, I will become the Guardian this world needs."
