Chapter 197: If You Want to Live Well, You Have to Start by Chopping Down Trees
In the capital's residential complex, Mike was discussing strategies with Tom and Ethan via voice chat. Just now, they had been hoping to defeat Yhorm the Giant in "Death Mode."
It has been quite some time since its launch, and so far, with the exception of high-level bosses like Lord Gwyn, no boss has been defeated. Most of the bosses have been defeated, even mastered by some powerful players. This was something Alex had anticipated. While the AI used in Death Mode was not as "intelligent" as one might imagine, it was still capable of detecting patterns. Strategies have been developed for this, although they require a certain level of skill. However, with a little coordination, defeating a boss in Death Mode is no longer impossible for average players.
"It took you an eternity to reduce half of Yhorm's health! You could play Alex's new game!". Sarah, looking at Mike's computer screen, was speechless.
He was yelling with so much excitement that she thought he had won.
"It was already Yhorm's second phase, and I was too excited to get past it. I'll definitely beat him today. As for Alex's new game, it's already here and it can't escape. Besides, Tom has to leave tomorrow, so he won't regret it," Mike said.
"How can you talk like that, Mike! I'm on a business trip, and the one who tells you is dying! I saw the introduction of Don't Starve and it says that the mobile and PC versions can coexist. I'll take the high-speed train tomorrow and play it anyway!", Tom's voice resonated through the speakers. "Then, you guys play. I'll go see if Don't Starve is fun. But I have to say that your teamwork is... awful!". Without waiting for Mike's response, Sarah returned to her room, logged into her Nebula games platform account, and downloaded Don't Starve.
The game was not big and downloaded in the blink of an eye.
Sarah clicked on the game's icon and entered.
First, a computer-generated animation played. Unlike Dark Souls's elaborate computer-generated animations, Don't Starve's animation resembles a simple cartoon.
With an unsettling, even cheerful, background music, the camera follows a raven-like bird as it flies towards a villa in the wilderness. In the window, a cartoon figure with disheveled hair performs an experiment, with his name next to it: Wilson.
But the next instant, his experiment fails and Wilson collapses on the sofa with a dejected expression.
Just then, an unsettling voice emanates from the nearby radio.
"It seems you've gotten into a mess."
"I have something to know."
"If you think you're ready."
Wilson, brimming with joy, nodded.
A torrent of knowledge flooded his mind.
With the help of these memories, Wilson resumed his experiment. He put the pieces together one by one, and finally, after cutting his hand with a knife to extract blood, a strange machine appeared before him.
"Very well, now turn it on."
But Wilson hesitated.
The next instant, the voice from the radio roared:
"Quickly! Turn it on!".
Wilson flipped the switch and a pair of dark hands grabbed his ankles and pulled him directly to the ground. At the same time, a mysterious black figure appeared outside the house, with a strange smile.
The peculiar style of the painting, plus the strange music, made Sarah unconsciously shrink back.
'It can't be a horror game!'.
Sarah felt a wave of anxiety.
After the CG animation ended, the game officially started and the user interface appeared on the monitor.
It was a very simple interface, with only five different options: Start game, Load save, Workshop, Options, and Exit game.
Load save was grayed out because the game had not yet officially started. As for the mods, Sarah clicked on them, but found nothing there.
Finding nothing special, Sarah decided to start the game.
[Generating world... Insert food]
[Generating world... Insert menacing creature]
[Generating world... Insert shadow]
With the progress bar scrolling and the prompts scrolling, Sarah entered the game in about three or four seconds.
The style was similar to the previous animation, although it did not look as detailed as the CG animation. The game's graphics looked like an oil painting, and the linear, cartoon-like character designs made it surprisingly fluid.
While Sarah was still commenting on the game screen, a strange, long-faced wizard suddenly appeared in front of Wilson, who had gotten up from the ground.
"Hey, friend, you don't look well."
"A reminder: you'd better find something to eat before nightfall."
With these words, the man in front of him vanished.
Simultaneously, the game camera slowly moved and the character interface appeared. There was an inventory, a toolbar, and in the upper right corner, the number of days, along with the health, sanity, and hunger meters.
Based on some descriptions and her own understanding, Sarah had a basic understanding of these. The number of days, hunger, health, and sanity; literally, they simply represented time, whether you had eaten enough, whether you were sick, and your mental state.
In addition to time, if any of these numbers reached zero, the character would probably die or continue to lose health.
There was also a function bar with various options such as [Tools], [Campfire], [Survival]...
Clearly, it was supposed to be a tech tree. Some slots were empty, but it was not clear whether it was by design or whether more functions would be unlocked later.
Sarah controlled Wilson, the game character, as he wandered around, picking up everything he saw and grabbing everything he could.
"This map is huge! First, let's make an axe and then chop down trees."
Sarah collected a bunch of supplies from the ground and discovered that the map of this mini-game was ridiculously large.
And according to the introduction in the toolbar, for now she can only make an axe.
And after she has an axe?
Then it's natural to chop down trees. After all, if you want to survive, you need a home, and this home is a house. I don't know if there are bricks in this game, and even if there were, I guess they can't be made now, so we can only build wooden houses.
If you want to live well, you have to start by chopping down trees.
In a survival game, before you know how to play, there is nothing wrong with chopping down some trees without saying anything.
