Chapter 196: Don't Starve Is Now Available
September 11 marked the end of this year's autumn holiday, with only one day remaining for the three days of vacation. During this time, many of Dark Souls's Death Mode bosses were finally defeated. Yhorm the Giant, a frequent target of players' mockery, was finally no longer alone.
During this time, many players tagged Alex on his official Twitter account with various questions. From questions about the genre of Alex's next game to questions about the Dark Souls story and whether there would be a sequel to the series.
That day, many players were surprised to discover that the official Twitter account, which had been silent until then, had published a message about a new game: "The new game, Don't Starve, is now available on the Nebula platform."
This is a sandbox game that combines adventure, survival, role-playing, creation, and exploration. Players must survive in an unknown and mysterious world by searching, extracting, and using limited resources. The game is multiplayer, which allows you to explore and survive with your friends in this mysterious and unknown world.
The features include: a complete creation system that allows you to experience the joy of creation; a distinctive Gothic style; a vast explorable map full of unknown possibilities; and free sandbox-style play.
Just like previous smaller-scale games like Three Kingdoms Tactics and Overcooked, Alex simultaneously developed the PC and mobile versions of Don't Starve. Of course, considering the differences in control methods and the platform differences introduced by later mods, each version has its own region, and only the clean version can share data.
This means that, if the corresponding mod is installed, players can connect online, but only with players from their respective platforms. In addition, players do not have to buy the game twice, as the data is shared. After playing on PC, players can continue playing on their mobile devices. However, this is limited to inheriting the saved data of the clean version.
After the publication of Alex's official blog, Don't Starve ads have been released one after another on the main game websites and some communities, including the Nebula platform.
Of course, it is not as popular as the previous Dark Souls: First Flame and It Takes Two. But it also surprised many players.
"What's wrong? Has Alex developed another game?".
"Let's see, it looks like a low-budget game?".
"A small game? Let's see, the style is a bit weird!".
"What are you complaining about? Didn't Alex say it in the official blog, Gothic style?".
"Brother, what is Gothic style?".
"How do I know what Gothic style is? I only know what Loli style is."
"?????? Something's wrong, where's the police? I want to call the police!".
"Stop deviating, what does this sandbox game mean? What kind of game is sandbox?".
"I don't know, Alex made it up, right?".
"Survival, and this style... Damn! Isn't it a horror game?".
"It's not impossible! Maybe Alex made a demo of Silent Hill PT before and didn't find it satisfying enough. Don't make up your own stories, guys! Didn't Alex's official blog make it clear? It's not a horror game."
"Haha, I only half believe Alex's words. He was brandishing a mallet at the Game Expo, and he knows how to talk about life philosophy. If you believe everything he says, you'll be sold and you'll pay!".
"Anyway, I'll wait and see!".
"It doesn't matter, buy it. It only costs $5. If it doesn't work, I'll give it back to you."
Many players commented on Alex's official blog. Some decided to wait and see how it went, while others expressed great anticipation. This survival game, at least from the description, seemed quite interesting, and $5 was not expensive.
After seeing the official blog post from Alex, many designers in the video game industry were also confused. After all, Alex is no longer an unknown. On PC, he has released numerous games that have had a profound impact on the industry.
From the launch of Undertale, a pioneer in metagame functions, to the rise of cooperative games like Overcooked and It Takes Two, which boosted the popularity of the genre, Dark Souls has amazed many designers. Even a hardcore game with such a high level of difficulty could attract such a large audience.
Meanwhile, Nebula Games has not yet fully entered the world of virtual reality, and no designer has experienced it. However, judging by the video of the PC version, it is a classic. Even the horror games released since then have incorporated loop elements.
Although Don't Starve is a relatively small game, its "sandbox" label has caught the attention of many designers.
"Sandbox? What is that? Did Alex coin it for promotional purposes?".
"Not really. In fact, there are some sandbox and sandbox-style games on the market, and many have had considerable success, but they are still relatively niche."
"Don't focus on the game. Don't you realize that Don't Starve is a little different from the usual Nebula Games?".
"What's the difference?".
"The platform!". "Previously, while Nebula Games products offered additional discounts on their platform, they were also released on others. However, this time, Don't Starve has not announced other platforms!".
"Does this mean that Alex plans to release only on his own platform? Does Nebula Games have such a large user base?".
"Of course not. Don't underestimate Alex. Besides, I think this time it's just a test, as Alex didn't mention anything exclusive."
The new release from Nebula Games, Don't Starve, has caught the attention of many designers in the industry. And not just designers; traditional game developers and distribution platforms like NetDragon and Aether Games are also keeping an eye on the performance of Nebula Games. The industry's attention has not had a significant impact on the average player.
As for the fact that Don't Starve is only currently available on the Nebula Games platform, although there has been a lot of discussion among players, those interested have not given it much importance and buy it directly. This is especially true with the consolidated player base of Nebula Games. Each new release from Nebula Games offers discounts if you buy it on their platform. At first, players bought games simply for the favorable conditions, but in the last two years, many have developed the habit of buying games from the Nebula Games platform. They all buy games from the Nebula Games platform unconsciously.
