Nani wasn't always this wary of Sky. In fact, he once had a massive crush on him. From the moment he first saw Sky during his visit to the orphanage Nani grew up inā-Nani was ten years old at that timeā-Nani had been drawn to him.
Nani later found out that not only was Sky intelligent, but he was also an athlete, excelling in every sport he tried. Nani had spent years watching him from afar, admiring his effortless charm.
At age eighteen Sky had become the ultimate playboy, breaking hearts without remorse. Boys, girls it didn't matter. He used them, discarded them, and yet they still flocked to him.
Nani understood why. Even he would have thrown himself at Sky if he had the chance.
But Nani? He was plain. Average. If 'plain' were a person, it would be him. That's how Nani saw himself-short, skinny, pale, with thick glasses that made him look like a stereotypical nerd. He had no fashion sense and no standout traits. Unlike Sky, he was painfully ordinary.
Nani could count on one hand the number of times he had seen Sky up close-even though they lived in the same estate. In fact, they never saw each other at home. The only glimpses Nani ever caught of Sky were at school and even then, always from a distance.
There was no real relationship between them.
Nani was just a child sponsored by the Thamnithit family -a pawn Sky's father had taken in to save face. He meant nothing to the family.
One fateful day, Nani was in his usual hiding spot-the school rooftop, the only place where he could escape during lunch breaks. Earphones in, laughing at a scene from an anime on his phone, he didn't notice the presence behind him.
When he finally looked up, his heart nearly stopped.
Sky Thamnithit stood before him, a cigarette dangling from his lips, staring down at him.
"Oh my God, I'm so sorry," Nani blurted out.
Sky raised an eyebrow. "Why are you sorry?"
"I... I didn't hear you coming. A-and for being here."
Sky exhaled a puff of smoke. "Relax. I'm just here for a smoke." He sat down beside Nani, close enough that Nani could feel his warmth.
For a long moment, neither spoke. Sky smoked in silence while Nani tried to calm his pounding heart. His long-time crush was right next to him.
"Want a drag?" Sky asked suddenly, holding out his cigarette.
Nani took it before he could think.
One inhale, and he was coughing violently. Sky smirked, amusement flickering in his eyes. "Hope you're good."
"I'm... fine," Nani wheezed, trying to regain his dignity.
Sky chuckled. "What's your surname?"
" Naruebet, Nani Naruebet."
Sky nodded. "Nani Naruebet," he repeated softly. Then, his gaze locked onto Nani's. "You have beautiful eyes."
Nani turned scarlet.Ā His eyes had a unique shade of brown and that was the first time anyone had ever complimented them.
And this was the beginning of everything.
