Chapter 17 - chapter 17

With Yuta's advanced treatment, the mouse's tail gradually healed, but it showed no sign of movement.

Everyone else had been shocked that Yuta could understand the answer, but they hadn't noticed the mouse's condition for the time being.

Yuta exhaled through his nose. The injury wasn't as simple as it looked.

Even though the tail had been reattached, the mouse remained unresponsive.

The docking of the tail hadn't been fatal, and it had already been motionless in the box beforehand.

Could it be that this mouse was already dead?

Everything in the Soul Society was composed of spirit particles. If he could restore those completely... could that count as resurrection?

That was what Yuta had in mind-and what he attempted next.

[You attempt to resurrect a mouse and successfully comprehend "Resurrection from the Dead."]

(T/N: ik Yuta is OP but really? He's THIS op?)

The glow from Yuta's hands shifted slightly.

Though it remained green, hints of red flickered through it now. He felt the change-it pulsed with something new and unfamiliar deep inside.

The white mouse labeled No. 79 began to stir. Its eyes opened with alertness and life that hadn't been there before. It shot up and scurried across the box with wild energy, bouncing around like some kind of rabbit on a sugar rush.

Most of the others dismissed it as simply successful healing. They assumed nothing out of the ordinary had occurred.

Unohana wasn't so convinced. The surprise in her expression was subtle but unmistakable.

She hadn't expected two freshmen this year to possess the talent for Kaidō techniques.

"Is your name Yuta? If you're interested, you're always welcome to transfer into Squad Four," Unohana offered calmly.

Kotetsu Isane peered at Yuta from behind Unohana's shoulder and smiled faintly. He was good-looking-and clearly capable. No harm in recruiting talent that looked easy on the eyes too.

Unohana Retsu signaled to wrap things up: "That's all for today's class. You're dismissed."

As soon as she finished speaking, the students flooded outward in a burst of chatter, turning the classroom noisy and chaotic again.

Yuta walked out alongside Kuchiki Rukia and several others who'd hung back slightly behind the crowd.

Unohana gave orders as they left. "Isane, put these mice away."

"Yes, Captain."

Kotetsu Isane moved at once to gather them up.

It didn't take her long to round up over a hundred mice and load them into several small containers.

"Alright. Let's head over to Division Twelve."

After class ended, Yuta and Rukia walked down one of the shaded pathways near the academy buildings.

They walked side by side for several minutes without speaking, though Rukia clearly wanted to say something. She hesitated each time her mouth opened, then closed it again right away.

"You want to ask me how I pulled that off?" Yuta glanced over at her without breaking stride.

"If you think it's not appropriate to share with me, that's okay. I understand," Rukia replied with a smile that felt almost careful in how gently she spoke it.

"There's nothing I can't say. I guess you could say I've got slightly better understanding than most."

"Slightly?" Rukia tilted her head in disbelief.

At Yuta's pace, what took most people months or years took him days... sometimes hours. And he called that slightly better?

"I believe you," Rukia said finally with a dry laugh. "Yuta, the one with unbelievable insight."

They chatted casually for another minute or two before Rukia slowed down and added:

"Actually... now that ghost-class is finished, I should be heading back to my squad post. I've been away longer than I should have. If you ever want to find me, feel free to stop by the 13th Division. I'll show you around as host."

"Thanks. I'll visit when I can and…"

Rukia reached into her robes and pulled out something small and warm from beneath the fold of fabric against her chest.

It looked sort of like a bear… or a rabbit… or a cat… nothing specific really-but it had wide ears and round cheeks stuffed with cotton-like softness.

"This is Chappy the Rabbit," she said quickly. "One of my favorites."

Yuta accepted the plush doll without saying anything right away.

Rukia lowered her head and turned away with fast steps before he could see her face clearly again.

He squeezed Chappy's face between his fingers lightly. The material dipped in under pressure and then bounced back up slowly. The ears wiggled faintly as he moved it a little side to side-it was genuinely cute in its own odd way.

"…I'll keep it close," he said, tucking it inside his robe.

Unohana Retsu brought Kotetsu Isane into the Twelfth Division building next.

The division was located far from the main campus-for good reasons. Their research often dealt with dangerous materials or unpredictable results. Better to risk unexpected explosions in isolation than near mission-critical infrastructure.

At first glance, Division Twelve looked plain-but anyone who tried storming in would realize too late that it was filled with traps hidden under every step and doorframe.

Standing like stone beside the entrance was a girl with a calm posture and eerie grace.

Her frame was slight but straight-backed as she waited there in silence.

Her hair framed her head neatly above long twin locks at her temples and one thick braid down her spine tied with crimson string near the bottom end. White bandages wrapped tight across her wrists and waist beneath her black uniform, pulling tight across her visible curves beneath its open edge design. Below that, she wore only a skirt-and her bare legs pressed together as she stood unmoving at attention.

Everything about her appearance was cold and perfect-even her gaze felt hollow of emotion entirely.

The vice-captain's armband on her arm confirmed it, it was Nemu Kurotsuchi waiting at the door for them.

When she spotted Unohana Retsu and Kotetsu Isane approaching, she bowed deeply without delay.

"Captain Unohana, I've been waiting for your arrival. Captain Kurotsuchi has information to share with you."

Unohana nodded in return without words.

Kotetsu Isane glanced sideways at the girl curiously before following inside. There was something off about Nemu's presence, not consciously offensive, but robotic in nature... unnatural somehow. She brushed it off quickly as something related to personality quirks or habits. Some people were born with that blank expression on their face all the time anyway.

Once they entered, The building completely changed atmosphere from outside formality to interior madness.

Everything smelled sterile and cold. Electrical wires sparked along some hallway edges while random rooms glowed under red lights or flashed internal alarm systems temporarily deactivated for maintenance work. Some labs contained dissected specimens-their organs labeled neatly in trays sealed behind thick glass panels... others were full of machines crunching data across dozens of screens all at once without explanation or context shown anywhere visible.

They walked briskly through unfamiliar sections until finally stopping at one reinforced door darker than the others around it.

When Unohana opened it, the room beyond was dimly lit except for the monitor screen at its far end displaying unreadable graphs shifting too rapidly to make sense of any individual chart or line color.

In front of it sat Mayuri Kurotsuchi himself, typing at speeds hard to follow by sight alone-with fingers moving independently like claws scratching across metal plates instead of normal keys...

That was when he finally spoke-and surprised them both with what he said next.
