Chapter 5 - The Paper That Judges You

A woman and a slightly older man entered the room, the woman's voice stiff. "Principal Xu."

Her eyebrows were unkempt, her eyes wide with a touch of severity, and her lips slightly curled downward, making her appear stern and hard to approach.

This was Li Airong, the only female homeroom teacher for the senior class at Yi Zhong.

Principal Xu lowered his pen, glancing briefly at the girl sitting in the corner, her legs casually crossed. "Li, I have a student I want to place in Class 1."

He succinctly explained the situation.

It was rare for a senior student to transfer mid-year.

Li Airong took the two files, her gaze narrowing when she saw the history grades.

"This student isn't a transfer student, is she? Shouldn't her grades be included in the academic records?" Li Airong asked, her tone unyielding. "Having someone like her in our class would disrupt the atmosphere, Principal. Are you joking?"

"Li, we have a student present. Please mind your language," the middle-aged man beside her interjected, frowning.

This man was Gao Yang, the homeroom teacher for Class 9.

He knew full well that the girl sitting in the corner was likely to be the student transferring into Yi Zhong.

Speaking so harshly in front of the student would surely make anyone with a shred of decency uncomfortable.

"Teacher Gao, you're in the general class. You might enjoy criticizing, but when she's placed in your class, can you remain so calm? Rather than making comments, perhaps you should focus on how to manage your students and improve your academic results," Li Airong retorted with frustration.

She taught the elite class, where only the top 100 students were selected.

Li Airong aimed to earn the title of Provincial Top Ten Outstanding Teacher next year, with only one slot available in the entire Yun Cheng. Having students who held back the class would damage her resume and increase her risks.

"If she were my student, I'd take responsibility for her," Gao Yang, who was not in favor of treating students differently, responded calmly.

Principal Xu remained seated, silent.

He glanced at the girl sitting in the corner, his gaze asking for her opinion.

Qin Ran lifted her eyes slightly, nodding without a word.

Her demeanor was neither cold nor warm, but her defiant youthfulness was evident in the tilt of her brows, making her seem deceptively composed.

Principal Xu withdrew his gaze.

He adjusted his glasses and gestured for Li Airong to give the documents to Gao Yang. "Teacher Gao, would you be willing to take this student?"

Gao Yang quickly scanned the file, his heart swelling with determination.

He was going to save this lost soul!

Seeing Gao Yang's agreement, Li Airong let out a sigh of relief, as though escaping a near disaster.

Qin Ran picked up her black backpack and followed Gao Yang slowly, her figure tall and slender. When Gao Yang asked her questions, she responded quietly, her voice soft, with a hint of defiance.

What a well-behaved, beautiful student, Gao Yang thought.

Li Airong, who walked ahead, glanced briefly at Qin Ran, then turned her eyes to Gao Yang, sneering, "No wonder Teacher Gao has been teaching for over twenty years and still hasn't progressed."

Gao Yang simply smiled at Qin Ran. "Qin Ran, don't give up. There's still one year left. Anything is possible."

Qin Ran nodded.

Li Airong's sneer only deepened as she turned on her heels, her heels clicking as she left.

"Teacher Li is like that. She teaches English in our class..." Gao Yang frowned but didn't engage with Li Airong, focusing instead on taking Qin Ran to collect her school uniform.

Qin Ran asked him where the school medical office was.

As they walked out, Gao Yang pondered, concerned that her grades were so poor, unsure of where to start.

"Teacher Gao, wait a moment," Principal Xu's voice called from behind the door. He adjusted his glasses. "I have an exam paper here I'd like you to review."
