Chapter 5 - Michel Delving

Luke looked him over in confusion, as his tone sounded like an interrogation.

"Hello, may I ask who you are?"

"I am Robin Smallburrow, the Sheriff of Michel Delving."

Luke was a bit surprised, not expecting to meet a Hobbit police officer.

"Hello, Sheriff Robin, I am Luke, just came from Hobbiton, and I'm planning to travel around the Shire."

"You are that Wizard Luke?!"

"Huh? Sheriff, you know me?"

"Ahem, the news of a Wizard arriving in Hobbiton has spread throughout the Shire, I didn't expect you to come to Michel Delving," the Sheriff explained after he reacted.

After learning Luke's identity, Sheriff Robin's attitude changed dramatically, and he warmly welcomed his arrival.

Led by Sheriff Robin, Luke arrived at the only inn in town, "The Bird and Baby Inn," to check in.

Besides its peculiar name, the inn's ceiling height was also somewhat unfriendly to him; he would easily hit his head on the roof when standing upright.

The inn's bed was also a bit small for him; the innkeeper had to combine two beds to barely allow him to stretch his legs while sleeping.

[Hogwarts Sign-in System: Location detected in the Shire - Michel Delving. Sign in?]

The system prompt appeared once again.

Luke was delighted and quickly shouted, "Sign in!"

[Sign-in successful! Congratulations on obtaining the Hogwarts first-year Charms Class textbook, "Standard Book of Spells, Grade 1"!]

A phantom spellbook appeared out of thin air, floating in front of Luke.

Luke found that the book would turn pages according to his will, and he immediately eagerly opened the Charms Class textbook.

The first-year Charms Class textbook content was not complex; it only recorded five basic and simple spells: Lumos, Levitation Charm, Incendio, Alohomora, and Reparo, with no offensive power whatsoever.

But Luke was very satisfied; since his transmigration, this was the first time he had come into contact with Magic.

Before, he only had Magic power and could only rely on the crudest methods to control objects to fly with Magic power.

That looked similar to the Levitation Charm, but it was very mentally and magically exhausting, requiring complete concentration during the control process without any distraction to control the cleaver for attack.

This meant that when controlling the cleaver against an enemy, he, unable to be distracted, would be a clear, living target.

Magic, however, was different; it was like a stable anchor point. Aside from requiring concentration at the moment of casting, once successfully cast, he only needed to focus on maintaining the output of Magic.

It could be said that the Magic effect was very stable.

Luke quickly flipped through the spellbook and then began to learn the simplest spell, Lumos.

After diligently and carefully reading and memorizing the principle of this spell, as well as its casting techniques and movements.

Luke began to attempt to cast the spell.

"Lumos!"

Since he didn't have a Magic wand, Luke simply waved his hand, mimicking the motion of waving a wand.

The first attempt was unsuccessful.

Luke was not disappointed; after all, no matter how simple the spell, if cast without a wand, it was wandless casting.

Wandless casting was a very advanced casting technique; besides some powerful Wizards who could master it, ordinary Wizards couldn't even perform nonverbal casting, let alone wandless casting.

Therefore, most Wizards in the Magic world, once without a wand, their combat power was not much stronger than a Muggle's.

Under Luke's continuous perseverance,

A faint light appeared at Luke's fingertip, though it was only the faint glow of a firefly and quickly Nox.

But it invigorated Luke, immediately giving him more hope.

"Lumos!"

Perhaps motivated by success, after chanting the spell again, a white light flickered at Luke's index fingertip, like candlelight, illuminating Luke's joyful smile.

The next day,

Sheriff Robin proactively invited Luke to visit various attractions in Michel Delving.

For example, the Shiremoot, where the municipal government worked, and he even received a cordial reception from the Mayor of the Shire.

The Shire was different from the outside world; its governance and management were very loose, always adhering to ancient laws. Basically, every town and village was self-governing, with hobbits voluntarily fulfilling their duties.

So the Mayor was basically only responsible for holding banquets, managing the post office, and maintaining public order, and was elected every seven years.

After visiting the Shiremoot, Sheriff Robin then took him to visit the Mathom House—the Shire's museum.

"Mathom" in Shire Hobbit slang means useless, so the Mathom House collected objects that hobbits considered useless to keep but too regrettable to discard.

However, when Luke arrived at this Hobbit museum, he was greatly surprised.

Because among the objects collected in the Mathom House, besides ancient items representing Hobbit history, there were surprisingly many weapons like bows and arrows, spears, armor, longswords, and axes.

Luke came before a bow and arrow.

The bow and arrow in front of him, made of an unknown wood, was entirely orange-yellow, hard as iron yet very flexible, and carved with elegant floral patterns.

"It is said that this is a bow and arrow used by an Elf, it has been here for a long time anyway," Sheriff Robin introduced, seeing his interest in the bow and arrow.

Luke was surprised to hear that,

He didn't expect that an Elf's bow and arrow would be collected here.

After that, Sheriff Robin introduced him to a few pieces of armor and axes said to be crafted by Dwarves.

These armors were clearly tailor-made for hobbits, and still bore traces of being hacked, obviously indicating that hobbits once wore them through a brutal battle.

It was hard for Luke to imagine what kind of enemy could have forced these gentle and friendly hobbits to take up arms and fiercely resist.

Finally, Luke stood before a shimmering silver chainmail.

The chainmail was woven from countless silver rings, like a vest, soft yet very tough.

However, Luke noticed that this chainmail vest was quite large, more like it was made for someone of Luke's height and build.

"It is said that this chainmail was forged by Dwarves; it is very tough, cannot be cut by a knife, nor melted by fire, but we hobbits cannot wear it, so it can only be kept in the Mathom-house," Sheriff Robin introduced.

Luke looked at this chainmail vest, very tempted.

He was currently a squishy Wizard and desperately needed a defensive item to protect his body.

"Sheriff Robin, I need this chainmail. Can it be sold?"

Sheriff Robin shook his head.

"I'm sorry, although the items in the Mathom-house are useless, they belong to the public property of the residents of Michel Delving. Wizard Luke, if you wish to obtain it, you would probably need the consent of all the town residents."

Luke was a bit disappointed to hear that.

But then Sheriff Robin's tone changed, and he said with a chuckle:

"However, Wizard Luke, if you can demonstrate Magic for everyone at the banquet, I think everyone would be happy to agree to your request."

"What banquet?"

"Five days from now is the 1200th anniversary of the founding of Michel Delving. Everyone in town will hold a celebratory banquet in the town hall, and you are very welcome to join us then!"

Hearing this news, Luke agreed without hesitation.

Originally, he had planned to leave after signing in here.

But now, in order to get the chainmail vest, he would stay here for a few more days.
