[uchiha ying – System Log: Ninja Fragment Absorbed – Byakugan Acquired.]
"I can turn it on... and off at will now?" Ying murmured.
His vision flickered—chakra lines, energy pulses, skeletal silhouettes. Everything in 360 degrees, one full kilometer around him. A perfect white-eye… but only in monochrome.
"Finally, some damn self-preservation..."
He couldn't help but recall the first days he arrived in this world—powerless, chakra-dry, terrified of exposure. Unable to awaken his Sharingan, surrounded by potential threats.
Ying clenched his fist.
Still not enough.
"I'm not ready to walk openly yet... I still have to stay in the shadows. Develop slowly—lewdly."
A grin crept onto his face.
At least this Byakugan variant was convenient. Unlike Hinata's, it didn't change his physical appearance—no bulging veins, no blue streaks. He could activate it discreetly, hidden within normal chakra consumption.
"Pretty considerate, for a dojutsu," he chuckled.
---
The sun dipped low, painting the sky in gold.
It was a school holiday, and clusters of parents gathered at the gates of the Ninja Academy to collect their kids.
"Lady Hinata, the Clan Head is waiting for you."
"...Understood."
Hinata followed the Hyuga guards without protest, but her violet gaze strayed—toward a familiar figure walking quietly along the outer path.
uchiha ying .
She bit her lip.
He kept insisting he was fine, even smiled afterward... but she'd seen that tiny smear of blood he tried to wipe away.
*He must've gotten hurt… And I—did that to him.*
*Maybe… he resents me now?*
Her heart sank.
*Next time… if he wants to vent, even beat me up a little... it's okay.*
"Lady Hinata?" one of the guards asked.
"N-No, it's nothing!" she snapped out of it.
---
Under the shadow of a large tree, a rusted old swing creaked.
Naruto Uzumaki sat there alone, feet barely touching the ground, staring at the gate beyond which happy kids were leaving with their families.
uchiha ying approached.
"You're still here?" he asked. "Where's Sasuke?"
Naruto looked up in surprise. Nobody ever answered when he spoke—not unless it was to insult him.
"...And you? Why haven't you gone home?"
"Not sure," Ying said honestly. "I saw you here and... you looked like a kicked puppy."
"A… puppy?"
Naruto blinked, then awkwardly scratched his head.
"I was thinking of eating ramen," he mumbled. "But I don't… I mean, I was gonna ask if you wanted to come, but…"
He trailed off, patting his pockets.
Not enough money. Not even for one bowl, let alone two.
"You were gonna treat me?" Ying smirked.
Naruto flushed. "Well—I mean—yeah. But I don't have any money, sooo…"
"Then why ask me?"
"...Because you kinda feel like Choji or Shikamaru. Like maybe we could be friends or something…"
Ying's heart softened a little.
He remembered Naruto's voice from that strange dream—the one person who told him to hide, not fight. The one who tried to protect others even when he was hated.
"Let's not get ramen," Ying said. "It's overpriced and unhealthy."
Naruto blinked. "You serious? Then where?"
"You wanna try Sasuke's cooking?"
"Wait—Sasuke cooks?!"
Naruto's jaw dropped. He leapt from the swing so fast it nearly snapped.
"I'm coming! Hell yeah, I'm coming!"
---
*Quaaawk—Quaaawk—*
Crows circled overhead.
In the branches above, a black-robed ninja tied a scroll to a pigeon's leg. His one visible eye followed the two boys—Ying and Naruto—walking side-by-side down the road.
Moments later, the pigeon returned, bearing a reply.
> Find a way to eliminate uchiha ying .
> Be discreet. Do *not* let the Jinchuriki notice.
The masked ninja crushed the scroll in his gloved hand, then silently leapt into pursuit.
---
"Tch... I thought surveillance backed off for the night."
Ying's eyes narrowed. His white-eye caught movement: a masked figure approaching—fast.
"This is bad..."
He hadn't expected hanging out with Naruto would trigger a reaction from the Root.
But he'd underestimated the paranoia of Konoha's elders.
Ying glanced up. Another figure in a black mask—a woman—moved like lightning between rooftops, zeroing in on the threat.
*Let's see what happens...*
Naruto was still talking excitedly beside him. He hadn't noticed anything.
"Hey, Ying—what trouble? You just said something."
"It's nothing."
Ying forced a calm expression, walking ahead while keeping a hand ready beneath his sleeve.
"Wait! Look—a cat's stuck up there!"
Naruto's eyes lit up. He dashed toward the tree without hesitation.
"Shit!" Ying cursed.
That cat was bait.
He moved—but two figures had already collided in midair.
*Clang—CLANG—CLANK—*
Metal struck metal.
In the dust and chaos, Ying caught sight of a purple-haired kunoichi in a black ANBU mask, blade drawn.
Facing her, another masked ninja—Root.
"Who are you?" she snapped. "You just attacked a civilian!"
"Stay out of this," the Root operative growled.
But as Naruto turned, holding the rescued kitten, the masked attacker cursed under his breath.
He vanished in a flicker, retreating into the alleyways.
"...Root scum," the ANBU woman muttered.
Even if he hadn't admitted it, she knew. Only Danzo's dogs would act so brazenly in broad daylight.
"You okay?" she turned to Ying.
He pretended to stagger a bit, like he hadn't followed the exchange.
"Th-thank you… I didn't even see what happened."
"Don't worry. Protecting the village's people is our job."
She gave him a final glance—then disappeared, leaping onto the rooftops.
*Root… Danzo's men are still after me.*
Ying clenched his jaw.
*This needs to be reported to the Hokage… before someone dies.*
