Before the awards were presented, the final match for third place had been a bitter, one-sided affair. Katsuki Bakugo had stormed onto the stage, ready to prove he was still a top contender. Shoto Todoroki, however, was a different person from the one who had fought earlier. The fire he had unlocked was gone, replaced by a cold, contemplative shell.
"BEGIN!" Present Mic had yelled.
Bakugo blasted forward, a barrage of explosions aimed at overwhelming his opponent. But Shoto only responded with ice. Massive walls met every attack but never launched one of his own, his mind still reeling from the festival's events and Akaza's words.
"FIGHT ME, YOU ICY-HOT BASTARD!" Bakugo roared, his frustration mounting with each deflected blast. "USE YOUR DAMN FIRE!"
But Shoto never did. The fight ended when Bakugo, in a final, massive Howitzer Impact, shattered Shoto's largest ice wall and sent him skidding out of the ring. It was a victory, but it felt like a loss. Bakugo stormed over to a defeated Shoto, grabbing him by the collar.
"Why?!" he screamed, his voice raw with fury. "Why wouldn't you use your full power against me?! Do you think I'm not even worth it?!"
Shoto just looked at him with tired eyes, not explaining. The hollow victory enraged Bakugo to the point that he had to be restrained by Cementoss and Midnight before the awards ceremony could even begin, leading him to be chained to the podium like a wild animal.
The roar of the crowd was a constant, rolling thunder that seemed to shake the very foundations of the stadium. On a trio of podiums in the center of the field, the top three students stood, battered and exhausted, but victorious. Akaza was on the highest platform, followed by Rumi on the second, and a chained Katsuki Bakugo on the third. Shoto Todoroki stood beside him, his expression calm and resolved.
"AND NOW, FOR THE MOMENT YOU'VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR!" Present Mic's voice boomed, though the cheers almost drowned it out. "IT'S TIME FOR THE AWARDS CEREMONY! AND OUR MEDAL PRESENTER IS… NONE OTHER THAN THE MAN HIMSELF! THE SYMBOL OF PEACE, ALL MIGHT!"
A colossal figure leaped from the top of the stadium, landing with a ground-shaking thud that sent a puff of dust into the air. "I AM HERE," All Might declared, his signature smile blazing, "TO PRESENT THE MEDALS!"
He walked first to the third-place platform. He placed the bronze medal around Bakugo's neck, who stood stiffly, his face a mask of barely contained fury.
"Young Bakugo," All Might said, his voice low enough for only him to hear. "You are undeniably strong. But you must learn that there is always a bigger mountain to climb. Use this loss not as an anchor, but as fuel."
Bakugo just gritted his teeth, refusing to look at him. All Might then turned to Shoto, placing an identical medal around his neck.
"Young Todoroki, you fought a battle with yourself today and won. I am proud of you. Continue to walk your own path."
Shoto gave a slight, respectful nod. "Thank you, All Might."
Next, All Might moved to the second-place podium, the silver medal gleaming in his hand. "Young Usagiyama," he said, his smile widening. "Your speed, power, and spirit were truly inspiring. You have the heart of a true champion."
Rumi grinned, her energy seemingly boundless despite the grueling final match. "Thanks, All Might!"
Finally, he stood before Akaza, the gold medal held in his massive hand. The crowd's cheers reached a fever pitch. "Young Akaza," he said, his voice filled with a profound respect. "Your performance today was beyond exemplary. You have shown a level of skill, power, and control that is frankly unbelievable for a student your age. You have earned this victory."
He placed the gold medal around Akaza's neck. "Congratulations, my boy. You have shown the world what it means to go Plus Ultra."
Akaza looked at the symbol of peace and gave a small, genuine smile. "Thank you, All Might. It's an honor."
With the medals presented, All Might took the microphone. "AND THERE YOU HAVE IT! LET'S HEAR IT ONE MORE TIME FOR THESE INCREDIBLE YOUNG HEROES!" The crowd's roar was the final, defining sound of a festival that no one would ever forget.
Two days later, Class 1-A was back in their homeroom, the atmosphere a mix of exhaustion and buzzing excitement. The students were covered in bandages and sported various bruises, but their spirits were high.
"Man, I can't believe how many people saw that on TV," Kaminari said, leaning back in his chair. "My phone's been blowing up."
"Indeed! The public's interest in our class has skyrocketed!" Iida announced, chopping the air with his hands.
The door slid open and a heavily bandaged Shota Aizawa shuffled in, looking more like a mummy than a teacher.
"Morning," he grumbled, taking his place at the podium. The class immediately fell silent.
"Good work at the festival. You're all tired, but we don't have time to rest. The real fight is about to begin." He clicked a remote, and a projection lit up behind him showing a graph with staggering numbers.
"The hero draft nominations," Aizawa stated. "Typically, the offers are spread out among the years, but this year, the focus was almost entirely on you first-years. And within that, the majority of the attention was focused on our class."
He displayed the results.
Akaza: 6,732 nominations.
Rumi Usagiyama: 4,125 nominations.
Shoto Todoroki: 3,556 nominations.
Katsuki Bakugo: 3,456 nominations.
…and so on down the list, with every student in the class having received at least a handful of offers.
"These nominations are from pro heroes who are interested in you for the week-long internships," Aizawa explained. "This will be your first real taste of fieldwork. You'll choose one hero from your list of offers and work alongside them. For those who didn't get offers," he said, his gaze sweeping over the few students who looked disappointed, "you'll be placed with a U.A.-affiliated agency. Everyone is participating."
He continued, "Along with this, you'll need to decide on your hero names. This is more important than you think. A good name can define your career." Midnight entered the room to help them with the process, and after a series of serious, heartfelt, and utterly ridiculous suggestions, the names were decided.
"You have the rest of the day and tomorrow to go over your offers and make your decisions," Aizawa concluded. "Rest up. You've earned it."
The next day was bright and clear, a perfect day off. Akaza met Rumi outside her house, finding her dressed not in a tracksuit, but in a simple sundress.
"What, no training?" he asked with a smirk.
"Nope," she replied, linking her arm with his. "Today, you're all mine. We're going on a proper date. No quirks, no fighting, just… us."
They spent the day doing everything and nothing. They went to a bustling arcade, where Rumi's competitive streak came out in full force on the dance machine, and Akaza revealed a surprising talent for claw games, winning her a stuffed carrot that she refused to let go of. They ate street food, laughing as they tried to avoid making a mess. For the first time in a long time, they weren't the powerhouse duo of U.A.; they were just Aki and his carrots, two teenagers enjoying a peaceful day.
As evening approached, they found themselves sitting on the roof of her house, watching the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple. The stuffed carrot sat between them.
"You know," Rumi said softly, leaning her head on his shoulder, "it feels like a lifetime ago we were just kids, dreaming about getting into U.A."
"We were just kids," Akaza replied, wrapping an arm around her. "Running around, causing trouble."
"You've always pushed me to be better."
"And you've always been there to catch me," she whispered, looking up at him. Her playful energy was gone, replaced by a deep, sincere affection that made his heart beat faster. "All those years… training, studying, fighting… we did it all together."
"We did," he confirmed, his voice just as soft.
They sat in a comfortable silence, watching the last sliver of the sun disappear. In that quiet moment, all the titles, champion, powerhouse, prodigy, melted away. He wasn't the boy with a dark past or a limitless quirk. She wasn't the fierce rabbit hero in the making. They were just two people who had found their family in each other.
She turned to face him, her amber eyes shimmering in the twilight. "I love you, Akaza. More than anything."
"I love you too, Rumi," he said, his voice thick with an emotion he only ever showed to her.
He leaned in, and she met him halfway. The kiss was soft and gentle, a stark contrast to the explosive energy that usually defined them. It was a kiss full of shared history, of unspoken promises, of a bond forged in hardship and strengthened by love.
When they finally broke apart, she rested her forehead against his.
"Let's do it, Aki," she whispered, her voice filled with a fierce, unwavering determination. "Let's become the strongest heroes the world has ever seen. Together."(Had you in the first half, didn't I😎)
He smiled, a true, peaceful smile that reached his black eyes. "Together."
