Chapter 2 - Duel of fates

As soon as Blake placed his hands on the orb, a heavy silence blanketed the area. Then, in the span of a heartbeat, an overwhelming aura of death and majesty descended upon the crowd. It was so intense that some of the teachers instinctively activated their beast powers just to withstand the pressure, while the students huddled behind them for protection.

Without warning, a massive skull—clearly belonging to an ancient beast—rose high into the air. Despite being just a skeleton, it exuded a fearsome presence that dwarfed even that of a Basilisk.

"Hmmm… my beast ability weakened a bit because of that aura… could it really be the unmentioned mythical creature of legend? Sadly, it's just a skeleton, else the boy's potential would have skyrocketed," the principal murmured as he summoned a shield of light to guard against the pulsing aura.

"I finally have a beast… uhhh, a dead one. Still counts though," Blake thought, stepping away from the summoning platform and returning to the crowd—completely unaware of Kai's furious yet fearful glare.

More students summoned their beasts until the evocation ritual ended.

When the final results were posted, Blake was among the thirty selected to join the prestigious academy.

Moving into his assigned room was surprisingly easy for Blake, considering all he had was a single small bag that held everything he owned.

"Wow, look at the room… it's so big, and the bed isn't wooden. I could sleep on it forever," Blake said with tears of joy in his eyes. Then he noticed another bed across the room, with bags already neatly stacked beside it.

"Two in a room, huh? I can stick with that," he thought to himself and collapsed onto the soft mattress. Within minutes, he drifted off into a deep sleep.

Blake awoke with a choke—literally. A massive hand gripped his neck tightly, lifting him into the air. Before him stood a towering figure, eyes burning with menace.

"Oi, don't you think your snoring is getting a little bit obnoxious?" the figure growled, giving him a death glare.

"I-I am s-sorry, please, you're c-ch-choking me," Blake stammered, struggling to breathe—and to keep from wetting himself.

"Anyways, you slept through the night and now you need to get your breakfast and prepare for your first class. And yes, I'm not a newbie—I'm a second-year class," the figure said, finally releasing Blake who collapsed to the ground, gasping.

"G-Good morning sir!! My name is Blake, and I hope for us to be good roommates towards each other sir!!" Blake stammered, bowing deeply.

"Don't address me with formalities. I am still young and not your uncle!" the figure snapped, veins pulsing on his forehead as he reached for Blake's neck again.

"Ahh sorry sir— I mean uhhhhh what is you name," Blake said quickly, trying to defuse the looming storm.

"The name's Brian, and next time you snore or call me an uncle I'll kill ya," Brian growled as he turned and marched off.

"Ehh… but I didn't call him uncle though…" Blake thought, thoroughly puzzled.

After grabbing a quick breakfast, Blake made his way to his first class.

The moment he stepped into the classroom, the atmosphere shifted. Silence fell like a heavy curtain. Students glanced at him with a mix of caution, mockery, and dread. Avoiding eye contact, Blake quickly slid into a seat beside a girl with glasses.

"Good morning everyone. My name is Ashira, and I'll be your teacher taking this class from today onwards," came a tired voice.

A skinny man with baggy eyes and a dusty old book in hand stood at the front. He looked like he hadn't slept in weeks, and he carried himself with a nonchalant air that immediately set the tone.

"Now, we teachers are supposed to assess your names and your beast abilities by asking you to show us," he said with a sigh, "but that would be boring, don't you think? And I know most of you have been dying to show off your new beasts and abilities—so we're going to make it a duel. You are to find a partner to duel right away. Follow me to the training field for the duel," Ashira announced, already walking out.

As Blake looked around nervously, trying to find someone willing to pair up with him, the first battle was already about to begin…
