Broly didn't like to drink. He finished the water in his glass and prepared to leave. Before he stood up, he suddenly remembered something and asked with a puzzled expression.
"By the way, where's Wade? Why isn't he at the bar?"
He'd been feeling like something was missing, and now he realized it was that ever-rambunctious Wade.
Jack Hammer paused, the smile on his face slowly fading. He said with a hint of sadness, "He has cancer. He's in the hospital now, with not much time left."
Broly's expression hardened. He was certain that Wade was Deadpool; that signature, foul-mouthed trash talker couldn't possibly be anyone else.
He just hadn't expected Wade's cancer to flare up at this time. When they'd parted ways in Mexico, he had clearly reminded Wade several times to get regular checkups. But he hadn't expected the cancer to be discovered too late.
"Which hospital is he in? I want to go see him."
Jack Hammer hailed a waiter to watch the bar for him and drove with Matt and Broly to the New York City Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
This hospital was one of the most technologically advanced in the United States for cancer treatment. Its medical fees were exorbitant, and those who could receive treatment here were either rich or powerful. If you had enough wealth, humans were not equal, even when facing cancer. Under the latest immunotherapy and CAR-T therapy, a significant portion of cancers could now be controlled and cured.
Even if a cure wasn't possible, some cancers could be turned into chronic diseases by taking targeted drugs, thereby suppressing the cancer cells.
However, the expensive medication and treatment costs were enough to bankrupt a middle-class family instantly, relying entirely on money to prolong life.
Jack Hammer described Wade's current condition to Broly. Wade was suffering from the most dangerous form of liver cancer, which had begun to spread throughout his body. Even the doctors at the cancer center were helpless and could only use palliative care to reduce his suffering.
Entering the cancer center, surrounded by lush greenery, Broly could sense that the patients' energy was, to varying degrees, somewhat weak. Some people's cancers were under control, and their energy was relatively stable. The energy of a few others was like a flickering candle in the wind, likely to be extinguished at any moment.
Standing in the ward, Broly found it hard to believe that the gaunt-faced man with sunken eyes was the same Wade who had previously displayed his abilities in Mexico. After several rounds of radiation therapy, his hair had fallen out, his complexion was sallow, and he had no vitality.
His girlfriend, Vanessa, had been taking care of Wade in the hospital during this time. Seeing Hammer and the other two enter, she put on a brave face despite her deep sorrow and poured water for them.
"Wade, I don't know whether to be happy or sad seeing you like this."
Broly sized up Wade.
Wade's consciousness was still relatively clear. He raised a hand with difficulty and gave Broly a shaky middle finger. With his life nearing its end, he felt no fear of Broly.
Broly opened his hand, and powerful ki swirled, gathering in his palm, emitting a dazzling white light.
"Broly!"
Matt and Jack, thinking Broly was about to attack and kill Wade for his provocation, cried out in alarm. But they were too late to stop him, as Broly blasted the ki onto Wade's body.
Wade only felt a surge of powerful life force erupt from within. His body, ravaged by cancer cells and chemotherapy, was like a withered tree coming back to life, regaining its energy.
He flipped out of bed with a carp jump, staring at his hands in surprise.
"You think I was about to kill Wade?"
Broly glanced at Matt and Jack, who were both looking awkward.
"What... what's going on? Has my illness been cured?"
Wade asked, surprised.
Clang! A water kettle in Vanessa's hand crashed to the floor. She almost burst into tears as she hugged Wade. Her heart had been in turmoil these past few weeks, but she had been trying to hide it from Wade.
"His cancer hasn't been cured. I just gave him some of my ki. I healed his weakened body caused by the cancer and radiation therapy, but the cancer cells in his body haven't disappeared. But he should be able to live longer than before."
Broly explained. Cancer cells were a part of Wade. Even the Mafuba couldn't seal them away separately. While his ki had given Wade a new lease on life, those cancer cells had also been strengthened by the ki, making them even more deadly.
What he'd done was merely to allow Wade to linger on.
Vanessa's smile froze, and she tightly hugged Wade's waist, silently weeping. Wade, on the other hand, was surprisingly open-minded. He laughed heartily and said:
"This is already pretty good. At least I don't have to lie in bed like a corpse, waiting to die helplessly."
A knock on the door suddenly came from outside the ward. A nurse walked in, looking a little annoyed, and scolded Broly and the others.
"The patient is very weak. I hope you can keep it down!"
Then she saw Wade, who was bouncing around on the bed, looking incredibly healthy.
"This...this is impossible?"
The nurse covered her mouth in shock. She remembered that this patient was clearly terminally ill and could only rely on a wheelchair to take a couple of laps in the hospital garden every day.
"Miss Nurse, please take Wade to get a checkup."
Matt stepped forward and said to the nurse.
"Okay... okay."
The nurse stammered a little. She really couldn't understand what had happened to this patient.
Soon, a doctor ran into the ward, looking at Wade, who seemed to have recovered, with a look of shock. As Wade's attending physician, he knew Wade's physical condition better than Wade himself.
Wade's body was already very weak and could no longer withstand chemotherapy, only waiting to die under conservative treatment.
He couldn't wait to take Wade to the hospital's testing center, preparing to carefully examine what changes had occurred in Wade's body.
"Let him hold on, I have a way to cure his cancer."
Broly said to Vanessa.
Because the mutant factory had been destroyed by him, Wade's cancer could hardly be cured with mutant serum. But he thought Wade wasn't beyond saving; as long as he could survive, he would definitely be able to wait for the opportunity to be cured.
Professor Connors' achievements in biotechnology far surpassed Francis, and he had made great breakthroughs in the field of biological serums. As long as there was enough time, curing cancer wasn't an impossible feat.
"Really?"
Hope rekindled on Vanessa's face.
"Of course. As soon as Wade's condition worsens, contact me, and I'll come to infuse him with air to help him hold on."
