Chapter 54 - Chapter 44

In Rebecca's living room, Aleksander, Wednesday, Enid, Will, Sam, and Rebecca gathered around the TV, watching the security footage.

Rebecca pointed at the screen. "Here he comes."

The tape showed Zack entering his house.

Dean glanced at the timestamp. "22:04—that's just after ten. You said time of death was about 10:30."

Rebecca nodded. "Our lawyers hired some kind of video expert. Says the tape's authentic. It wasn't tampered with."

Aleksander and Sam exchanged looks, both noticing something unusual on the tape.

Aleksander spoke first. "This is definitely our shapeshifter."

Sam looked at Aleksander. "You noticed it too."

Aleksander nodded.

Dean leaned in. "What did you guys find?"

Aleksander gestured for everyone to come closer. Wednesday, Enid, Will, and Rebecca stepped forward.

Sam explained, "Check this out." He rewound the tape and replayed a frame showing Zack looking directly at the camera. His eyes flashed silver.

Sam paused the footage.

"That's definitely a demonic shapeshifter," Aleksander said. "They can be identified by a retinal flare that appears on film or when light crosses their eyes."

Sam added, "You know, a lot of cultures believe a photograph can capture a glimpse of the soul."

Wednesday's voice was steady. "There's a chance he's still out there, walking around in this form, looking for his next victim."

Rebecca's worry deepened.

Aleksander turned to Rebecca. "Give this tape to the sheriff." He handed her a number. "Call this and show him the footage. This should be enough to close the case."

Will frowned. "What if he doesn't?"

Aleksander smirked confidently. "Then he'll be permanently removed from his job."Enid spoke up. "Is there any way to find this shapeshifter here in St. Louis?"

Dorn's fingers flew over the keyboard as he ran the image through an advanced AI facial recognition system.

On his screen, a sleek, high-tech HUD displayed live camera feeds with multiple faces outlined in sharp boxes. Thin lines tracked each person's movement, while small data panes showed IDs and confidence scores that updated frame by frame. When the system locked onto Zack Warren, the alert panel shifted colors, confirming a high-confidence match. The tracking was fluid and continuous, seamlessly following faces as they moved through crowded streets.

Scanning through security footage from that morning, Dorn soon spotted Zack Warren sitting on a bench across the street from a house. In the footage, an Asian man emerged from the house with his wife. They shared a brief kiss before the man got into his car and drove away.

Zack watched intently as the woman, Lindsay, returned inside.

Dorn's voice came quickly, "Your guy seems to be stalking someone." Then he caught a glimpse—Zack smiled wickedly, and for a brief moment, his eyes glinted silver before returning to normal."Alek, That shapeshifter of yours has a new target , no doubt. And he's locked in. You'd better get there now."

Aleksander turned sharply to Dean and Sam and shouted, "Guys, the shapeshifter has a new target."

Dorn quickly pulled up the information and said, "The new targets are Alex Shindoka and his wife, Lindsay Shindoka. Their house is just a few blocks from your location. Sending you the coordinates now."

"Thanks," Aleksander replied. He cut the call and sprinted toward the car.

Dean was already waiting, engine roaring in his black 1967 Chevrolet Impala. "Both of you, get in!"

Sam and Aleksander jumped into the Impala. Dean slammed the gas, and they raced through the streets toward the address. When they arrived, the front door was wide open. They hurried inside, moving cautiously through the house. Reaching a nearby room, they pushed the door open and found Lindsay tied to a chair, beaten and covered in blood.

She whimpered, "Help me."

Sam rushed over to untie her.

Dean checked around to see if Shapeshifter is still around.

Meanwhile, Aleksander's eyes caught movement—a figure lying unconscious on the floor. It was Alex Shindoka.

Aleksander hurried over to Alex Shindoka's motionless form and checked for signs of life. Satisfied he was alive, Aleksander called out, "We found Alex Shindoka. He's knocked out, but breathing."

Dean stepped closer, eyeing the man carefully. "Is he really him? The real Alex?"

Aleksander nodded firmly. "Yeah, this is the real one. He came back because a meeting got canceled. That's why our shapeshifter got caught off guard, knocked him out, and ran."

Soon, Alex Shindoka groaned and slowly woke up. Aleksander, Sam, and Dean quickly explained the situation to him. An ambulance was called for Lindsay, who was visibly shocked and traumatized — now certain it wasn't her husband who tried to kill her.

Sam approached with Wednesday and Enid. "I picked up a trail, someone ran out the back of this building and headed off this way."

Wednesday blandly added, "I realized something. The videotape shows the killer going in, but not coming out. So we went back to Zack's house to check. Our shapeshifter went out the back door."

Enid nodded. "The police never pursued that path because they believed the killer never left. Instead, they caught your friend Zack inside."

Aleksander spoke up, "Alex said he saw the shapeshifter take his form. So I checked the cameras around here—we didn't pick up anyone coming through this area."

He paused, then looked down toward a nearby drainage manhole. "Unless he went underground."

That caught everyone's attention. Wednesday nodded sharply. "Of course. He's using the drainage system to move around unseen."
