Chapter 30 - MR. PRESIDENT

The days following Sakura's chilling declaration and Itami's continued absence were a blur of gnawing anxiety for Ren. Every corridor felt like a potential ambush, every casual glance from a classmate a suspicious scrutiny. He tried to immerse himself in the midterm preparations, but his mind was a fractured landscape of worry for Itami, fury at Valerius, and a profound, unsettling revulsion towards Sakura's twisted devotion. The academic struggle, once paramount, now felt like a trivial charade he was forced to maintain.

He was in the school library during a rare quiet moment, attempting to decipher a complex physics diagram, when the familiar voice of Li Wei broke through his distracted thoughts.

"Emperor, a moment, if you please."

Ren looked up. Li Wei stood beside his table, her usual composure intact, but her eyes held a subtle urgency. Beside her stood a tall, impeccably dressed young man with an air of effortless authority. He had a confident smile, sharp, intelligent eyes, and carried himself with a natural charisma that commanded attention. He was the kind of individual who seemed to glide through the world, leaving an impression of competence and charm.

"Ren," Li Wei said, her voice formal, "May I introduce Kenji Tanaka, our Student Council President."

Kenji extended a hand, his smile widening. "Ren, it's a pleasure to finally meet you properly. Li Wei speaks highly of your... unique perspective on things." His grip was firm, confident. "I've also heard you're quite the chess player. Hiroshi's been talking about your recent match."

Ren returned the handshake, his gaze assessing. Kenji's presence was undeniably strong, radiating an aura of leadership that was almost imperial in its own right, albeit in a far more benign, modern context. He seemed entirely at ease, utterly in control of his surroundings. Ren's mind, ever wary, instinctively sought out any hint of the arcane, any shadow of Valerius's influence. But there was nothing. Kenji seemed... genuinely normal. Alarmingly so, given the chaos swirling around Ren.

"The pleasure is mine, President Tanaka," Ren replied, his voice regaining a touch of its imperial formality.

"Please, just Kenji," the President chuckled, a warm, inviting sound. "No need for formalities among fellow students, especially with midterms breathing down our necks, right?" He glanced at Li Wei, who offered a small, almost imperceptible nod. "Actually, that's partly why I wanted to catch you. Li Wei mentioned you've been putting in extra hours in the library. Good to see dedication, especially with the pressure building up."

He paused, his smile dimming slightly, a hint of genuine concern entering his eyes. "On a more personal note, Ren, I heard about Itami's absence. Family emergency, I believe? I hope everything is alright. He's a good kid. And you seem quite close."

The casual mention of Itami's absence, framed as a mundane concern, felt like a fresh wound. Ren's jaw tightened. He wanted to scream the truth, to reveal the shadow that had taken his friend, but he held his tongue. "He is... dealing with a difficult situation," Ren stated, his voice carefully neutral.

Kenji nodded sympathetically. "I understand. Well, if there's anything the student council can do, please don't hesitate to reach out. We're here to support all students." He clapped Ren lightly on the shoulder, a friendly, reassuring gesture that felt utterly alien given the true nature of Ren's plight.

"Also," Kenji continued, turning to Li Wei, "just a reminder about the final festival planning meeting after school. We need to nail down those vendor contracts before the midterms hit full swing."

"Of course, Kenji," Li Wei replied, her voice smooth, her composure flawless. "I've already prepared the revised budget proposals."

Kenji smiled, a genuine appreciation in his eyes. "Excellent, Li Wei. Always reliable. You're a lifesaver." He then gave Ren another friendly nod. "Good luck with your studies, Ren. Don't let the stress get to you. We'll all get through this."

With another confident smile, Kenji Tanaka walked away, disappearing into the stream of students, leaving Ren and Li Wei alone.

Ren watched him go, a profound sense of bewilderment washing over him. Kenji Tanaka. The Student Council President. A figure of authority and influence in this world, yet seemingly utterly oblivious to the ancient war raging beneath the surface. His concern for Itami, his casual friendliness, his focus on mundane school affairs – it was all so... normal.

"He is... an enigma," Ren murmured to Li Wei, his gaze still fixed on the spot where Kenji had vanished.

Li Wei sighed, a subtle weariness returning to her eyes. "He is what this world considers a 'leader,' Kaelen. Charismatic, capable, entirely focused on the mundane. He is not Awakened. He is not a soul from our past. He is simply... a human." She paused, then added, her voice low, "And that, Emperor, is both a blessing and a burden. He sees nothing of the true battle. And we must ensure he continues to see nothing."

As the final bell shrieked, signaling the end of the school day, Ren and Li Wei found themselves walking home together, the setting sun casting long shadows before them. The usual stream of students thinned out as they left the school grounds, leaving them in a more private space.

"General," Ren began, his voice tight, the formality returning as he spoke of their true concerns. "Sakura's words this morning... her claim. And Itami's continued absence. What do you make of it? More importantly, how do we save him?"

Li Wei walked beside him, her posture straight, her gaze fixed on the path ahead. "Her words confirm a profound corruption, Kaelen. Valerius has twisted her very essence, feeding her a false promise to secure her loyalty. She is a weapon, aimed directly at your emotional vulnerabilities." A faint, almost imperceptible tightening around her lips betrayed a flicker of the unfamiliar emotion she had felt before, a subtle possessiveness she still couldn't name. "And Itami... his absence is deeply concerning. It aligns with Valerius's pattern of isolating you."

"But how?" Ren asked, his frustration evident. "How can we act? We are bound by the limitations of this world, unable to wield our true power. And if we reveal ourselves, we risk exposing Itami, exposing ourselves further."

Li Wei nodded, her expression grim. "Indeed. It is a precarious balance. We must continue to operate within the shadows of this world's rules. I have made discreet inquiries about Itami's 'family emergency,' but official channels yield little. We cannot simply storm his residence, Kaelen. Not yet." She paused, then continued, her voice softer, almost reflective. "Our first step must be to understand the nature of Valerius's control over Itami. Is it a complete possession, or a subtle manipulation? The former is far harder to undo without direct confrontation."

Ren considered her words, his mind already formulating strategies. "You're actually really good at this, you know?" Ren said, trying to use more modern phrasing, a slight awkwardness in his tone. "Like, how you handle everything here, it's pretty... impressive. You blend in so well."

Li Wei, however, faltered. A deep, surprising blush bloomed across her cheeks, staining them a delicate rose. Her eyes, usually so steady, darted away from his for a brief moment, and she tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear, a small, almost shy gesture. "I... I merely do what is necessary, Emperor," she murmured, her voice a shade softer than usual. "It is my duty to serve. To protect." She cleared her throat, regaining her composure with a visible effort, the blush still lingering. "And as for my name... I chose to retain it. It is a reminder of who I am, of my purpose. A link to my past, even in this new life."

"Valerius is playing a dangerous game, Emperor," Li Wei affirmed, her voice firm once more, the blush receding. "He is not merely seeking victory; he seeks to break your spirit, to make you surrender not just your power, but your will. He targets those you care for, those who ground you in this new life."

Ren clenched his fists. "Then we must find a way to counter him. To reclaim Itami. And to stop Sakura before she becomes an even greater threat."

"We will," Li Wei affirmed, her voice unwavering. "But we must be patient. Strategic. We are in a new war, Kaelen, on a new battlefield. And our first task is to understand the enemy's new tactics. The midterms are merely a distraction, a cover. The true battle is for the souls of those around us."

They continued their walk in silence, the weight of their shared mission, and the growing personal stakes, settling heavily between them. The normal world around them, with its carefree students and mundane concerns, felt like a thin, fragile illusion, barely concealing the escalating, ancient war that now threatened to consume them all.
