Chapter 32 - URGENT ESCAPE

The days leading up to the midterms blurred into a tense, unsettling routine for Ren. Itami was back at school, a constant, chilling presence that only amplified Ren's isolation. The boy moved with an unnerving precision, his face devoid of its former expressiveness, his eyes flat and observant. Ren tried to approach him, to speak to him as he once had, but Itami would subtly deflect, his responses brief and devoid of warmth.

The most disturbing change was Itami's new

"tutoring" habit. He would only engage with

Ren academically if Sakura was nearby, usually at a neighboring table in the library, seemingly engrossed in her own studies, but always within earshot, her presence a cold, watchful weight. Itami would answer Ren's questions with a detached efficiency, his explanations precise but mechanical, lacking the enthusiastic tangents and genuine curiosity Ren had come to expect. It was less a tutoring session and more a performance, a subtle surveillance.

Lunchtime became another stark reminder of Itami's transformation. Itami, who had once been Ren's eager companion, always ready to discuss the latest manga or debate historical theories, now ate alone, or sometimes, subtly positioned himself near Sakura and Hiroshi's table. He never joined Ren, never offered a shared joke or a complaint about the cafeteria food. Ren would sit by himself, the noise of the bustling cafeteria a dull roar around his growing sense of loneliness. He felt exposed, a target under constant, unseen scrutiny.

This subtle, yet profound, shift in Itami's behavior did not go unnoticed by everyone. Kenji Tanaka, the Student Council President, possessed a keen eye for the social dynamics of the school. He had seen Ren, the quiet new student, and Itami, his earnest, talkative friend, as an inseparable pair. Now, he observed Ren sitting alone, his gaze often distant, and Itami, usually so gregarious with his friends, maintaining an unsettling distance. He also noticed the subtle, almost imperceptible glances Itami would sometimes cast towards Ren, glances that seemed more like observation than camaraderie.

On the fifth day before the midterms, as Ren sat alone at a cafeteria table, pushing around his lukewarm lunch, Kenji approached. He carried his own tray, a confident, easy smile on his face.

"Mind if I join you, Ren?" Kenji asked, his voice friendly, his eyes assessing. He didn't wait for an answer, sliding into the seat opposite Ren. "Itami's been a bit of a ghost lately, huh? Hope everything's okay with his family."

Ren looked up, surprised by the unexpected company. He hadn't expected Kenji, the popular and busy Student Council President, to seek him out. "He is... changed," Ren replied, choosing his words carefully. "He seems... preoccupied."

Kenji nodded, his smile fading slightly. "Yeah, I've noticed. It's weird. Itami's usually glued to your hip, talking about historical battles or something." He took a bite of his sandwich, then leaned forward slightly, his voice dropping a notch. "Look, Ren, I don't know what's going on with him, but you seem a bit out of sorts too. Midterm stress?"

Ren hesitated. He wanted to confide, to explain the ancient war, the corrupted friend, the yandere stalking him. But Kenji was a "human," as Li Wei had put it. He wouldn't understand. He couldn't. "The academic challenges of this era are... considerable," Ren offered, a practiced deflection.

Kenji chuckled, a warm, genuine sound. "Tell me about it. History's a killer. But hey, we've only got a few more days till the exams. We'll get through it. And you don't have to tackle it alone." He gestured around the bustling cafeteria. "It's good to have someone to chill with, right? Keep your mind off things. If Itami's busy, I'm happy to hang out. You seem like a pretty chill guy, once you get past the whole 'stoic' thing."

"Thank you, Kenji," Ren said, a faint, unfamiliar warmth stirring in his chest. "I... appreciate it."

Kenji grinned. "No problem, man. We're all in this together, right? Now, about this cafeteria food... you think it's actually edible today?"

As Kenji launched into a lighthearted complaint about the school lunch, Ren found himself listening, a strange mix of relief and unease settling over him. Kenji's presence was a welcome distraction, a brief respite from the constant vigilance. But it also highlighted the dangerous tightrope he walked. He had to maintain his disguise, protect these innocent lives, even as the war for his very soul escalated, with his closest friend now a silent observer, a puppet in the enemy's hands.

The final bell shrieked, signaling the end of the school day. Ren gathered his books, the weight of the midterms still looming, but now compounded by the unsettling presence of the changed Itami. As he stepped out into the bustling school yard, Kenji fell into step beside him, a comfortable, easygoing presence.

"Walking home?" Kenji asked, adjusting his backpack. "Mind if I tag along? Got some student council stuff to clear my head from."

"Of course," Ren replied, appreciating the casual companionship. Kenji's normalcy was a strange anchor in the growing storm.

They walked side-by-side, discussing mundane school matters – the upcoming festival, the quirks of their teachers, the collective dread of the history exam. Ren found himself relaxing, just slightly, in Kenji's company. It was a brief illusion of ordinary life, a fleeting moment where the ancient war and its shadows seemed distant.

They were about halfway down the street, the school buildings receding behind them, when a figure suddenly materialized directly in front of them.

Li Wei.

She wasn't walking. She seemed to have simply appeared, her eyes wide with an urgency Ren had rarely seen. Her usual composure was fractured, replaced by a raw, desperate haste. Without a word, she grabbed Ren's arm, her grip surprisingly strong, and pulled him sharply, almost violently, away from Kenji.

"Ren! We need to go. Now," she hissed, her voice low and urgent, her gaze darting around them, scanning the street with a frantic intensity.

Kenji, startled, blinked. "Whoa, Li Wei! What's going on?" He looked between the two of them, bewildered.

Li Wei didn't even spare Kenji a glance. Her eyes were fixed on Ren, a desperate plea in their depths. "Emperor, we are being followed. I felt it. A strong presence. Too close. I cannot risk leading them to your family. We have to go somewhere else." Her voice was tight with suppressed fear, a tremor running through it that shocked Ren. Li Wei, the unflappable general, was genuinely afraid.

Ren, though surprised by her sudden appearance and aggressive pull, recognized the genuine alarm in her voice, the strategic urgency in her eyes. He trusted her instincts implicitly. "Followed?" he questioned, his own senses now straining, but he felt nothing.

"Yes. A shadow. It's subtle, but it's there," Li Wei insisted, her grip on his arm tightening. "I have no choice. I cannot endanger your family. We must go to a secure location." She pulled him again, harder this time, urging him to move.

Kenji, still looking utterly confused, took a step forward. "Li Wei, you're scaring him! What's going on? Where are you taking him?"

Li Wei finally turned to Kenji, her eyes flashing with a desperate intensity. "Kenji, please. Trust me. It's... complicated. Just know that Ren is in danger. I have to protect him. I'll explain later, I promise." Her voice was sharp, commanding, leaving no room for argument.

Before Kenji could respond, Li Wei tugged Ren sharply, almost dragging him, and broke into a run. Ren, still processing the suddenness of it all, stumbled but quickly matched her pace. They sprinted down the street, leaving a bewildered Kenji Tanaka standing alone, staring after them, the mundane world of school and homework suddenly seeming very far away. Ren glanced back once, seeing Kenji's confused, concerned face shrinking in the distance. The shadows were closing in, and Li Wei's desperate urgency was the only thing guiding him through the escalating chaos.
