Chapter 19: The D.E.O.'s Trap (and the Glitch's Escape)

Alex Danvers was not one to be easily deterred. My subtle emotional nudges to Kara, my frustratingly illogical "glitches," had pushed her past mere frustration into a realm of scientific obsession. The D.E.O., under her relentless drive, had designed a trap. A genuine, honest-to-goodness trap for "the Glitch."

"They've gone full Wile E. Coyote, haven't they?" I mused, watching the preliminary readouts of their deployment. They were setting up a multi-layered detection grid around a seemingly abandoned warehouse district, hoping to lure me in with a fabricated energy signature, then lock me down with a combination of alien technology and human countermeasures. It was rather quaint, actually. And entirely predictable. "They're still thinking in three dimensions, bless their little hearts. I'm thinking in five, plus a few extra for dramatic flair."

[THREAT LEVEL: MODERATE. DETECTION PROBABILITY: HIGH IF UNPREPARED. RECOMMENDED: EVASIVE MANEUVERS AND COUNTER-MEASURES.]

My sarcastic confidence was a shield, of course. Beneath it, a cold knot of fear tightened in my gut. Capture. Exposure. Dissection. The ghosts of Adam Stiels's trauma whispered in the back of my mind. The primal fear of being seen as a "dangerous mistake" by the very people I was trying to protect was a constant undercurrent. This wasn't just a game anymore; this was a test of my very existence.

I decided to play along, up to a point. I let them "detect" a faint, tantalizing energy signature, carefully modulated to mimic a blend of residual imp energy and a slight, almost untraceable trace of Kryptonian sun tea. Just enough to draw them in.

As their teams moved into position, deploying their glowing energy nets and whirring detectors, I was already there. Not physically, not in any way they could perceive. I was a phantom, an omnipresent awareness.

"Time for a show, D.E.O. Hope you enjoy the fireworks," I thought, a mischievous glint in my eye, despite the underlying tension. My goal was not just to escape, but to leave them even more bewildered than before. To push Alex's logical mind further into the abyss of the inexplicable.

As the trap closed in, I began my counter-measures. First, the sensory assault.

[SKILL: SENSORY ILLUSION (LVL 3). APPLICATION: SIMULTANEOUS AUDITORY AND VISUAL DISTORTION. FOCUS: OVERWHELMING CHAOS.]

All D.E.O. comms in the area suddenly erupted with the sound of a thousand synchronized kazoos playing a distorted version of "Flight of the Bumblebee." Simultaneously, every screen, every digital display, flickered wildly, displaying fleeting images of highly pixelated, dancing bananas wearing tiny top hats. The agents, caught off guard, stumbled, clutching their ears, blinking in disbelief.

Then, the physical. My Minor Telekinesis (Level 6) was perfect for this. I made every loose object in the warehouse district – discarded cans, empty boxes, stray bits of debris – float precisely two inches off the ground, then rotate slowly in place. Like an invisible, silent, incredibly bizarre disco.

"What in the name of...?" I heard Alex's voice crackle through the interference, laced with a new level of exasperation. "Report! What is this?!"

"Sir! All our sensors are going haywire!" an agent yelled back. "The energy signature is everywhere! And nowhere! We're detecting... dancing refuse?"

"Dancing refuse indeed," I chuckled, enjoying the chaos. But I needed a grand finale. Something that would leave them utterly flummoxed, something that hinted at a deeper, more profound power without revealing my true nature. A calculated risk.

My eyes narrowed, focusing on a single, abandoned forklift in the center of the warehouse.

[SKILL: REALITY WARPING (LVL 1). APPLICATION: OBJECT ALTERATION (TEMPORARY). FOCUS: THEATRICAL DISPLAY.]

This was a new skill, barely unlocked. A minute, temporary distortion of reality itself. A risky move. But necessary.

With a surge of power, a profound drain that left me gasping, the forklift shimmered. Not a visual illusion. It actually shimmered, its metal momentarily taking on the iridescence of a soap bubble. Then, for a breathtaking three seconds, it transformed. It became a perfectly rendered, miniature, solid gold statue of a disgruntled platypus wearing a monocle. Then, with a faint pop, it reverted back to a mundane forklift, leaving only a lingering scent of ozone and the undeniable, unsettling feeling that something impossible had just happened.

The D.E.O. agents stared, mouths agape. Alex Danvers, who had just entered the area, froze, her eyes wide, staring at the perfectly normal forklift. Her logical mind, her entire worldview, visibly fractured for a moment.

"Did anyone else...?" an agent stammered, his voice filled with disbelief.

"No, Johnson," Alex said, her voice strained, a vein pulsing in her temple. "No, you're not seeing things. We just did. This is... impossible. This thing... it's not just manipulating energy. It's... bending reality." Her face was pale, a rare display of true shock. The core fear of an uncontrollable threat to Kara was palpable.

"Bingo, Agent Danvers," I thought, my body trembling from the energy drain, but a triumphant, if weary, grin on my face. "Welcome to my world. The world where logic goes to die and reality is just a suggestion. And that, my dear, is how the Glitch escapes. With style." My fear of capture was still there, but overshadowed by the profound satisfaction of having outwitted them, of pushing their understanding to its absolute limit.

Kara, I knew, would hear about this. And I could already feel the faint tremor of her own bewilderment through our empathic link, followed by a surge of awe. The Glitch wasn't just helpful. It was utterly, gloriously, impossibly weird.
