Chapter 25 - Chapter 25: A Question on the Wind

Chapter 25: A Question on the Wind

The chaotic ripples from my last Reality Warping display had begun to subside, leaving behind only the lingering scent of ozone and the occasional, inexplicable urge to hum show tunes. The lesson was learned, sharply and distinctly: even controlled chaos can breed unintended, chaotic consequences. My core fear of being a "dangerous mistake" had been poked, prodded, and amplified. The Burden of Power felt heavy, but also more refined, now understood through the lens of newfound caution.

This was the end of the arc. A time for reflection. On my journey from a helpless fan to a cosmic puppet master, on the unsettling yet vital growth of my Cosmic Empathy, and on the deepening, unspoken connection with Kara. She was more confident now, her flight soaring with newfound grace, her intuition sharper. I could feel her quiet contemplations through our link: a persistent question about "the Glitch," a profound sense of gratitude, and a yearning to understand the mysterious force that seemed to know her so intimately.

"She's wondering, isn't she?" I thought, my gaze fixed on a shimmering point on my HUD – Kara's location. "Who are you? Why are you helping me? Do you… understand me?" The temptation to reveal myself, to finally drop the charade, was immense. To be known. To be seen. But the risk was too great. The timeline. My past traumas. The D.E.O. The fragile hope she embodied.

My reflection on the arc's theme, The Escalation of Anomalies and the Search for Truth, led me to a conclusion. I couldn't give her answers, not yet. But I could give her a confirmation. A quiet, intimate message that would speak directly to her unasked questions, solidifying her belief in the Glitch as a conscious, caring entity, without revealing my identity.

I chose a moment when Kara was alone, standing on her apartment balcony, looking out at the city lights. I could feel her longing, a quiet ache for connection, mirroring my own.

Very faintly, almost imperceptibly, I caused a gentle breeze to stir around her. And carried on that breeze, a single, soft whisper, just audible enough to catch her ear. Not words. A single, harmonious chord from a Kryptonian melody, one she might have heard in fleeting dreams, a melody tied to comfort and home. It lasted only a second, then faded.

As the sound faded, a single, ethereal wisp of pure, shimmering light, the color of starlight, briefly coalesced directly in front of her. It hovered for a fraction of a second, forming the most rudimentary, symbolic representation of a question mark, before dissolving into nothingness. My response to her unspoken query.

Kara froze, her head tilting. She looked around, her eyes wide, then fixed on the spot where the light had been. She inhaled sharply, her hand instinctively rising to her chest. A wave of profound understanding, of absolute certainty, flowed from her through our empathic link. Not confusion, not fear, but a surge of pure, overwhelming gratitude and a deep, comforting sense of not being alone. The warmth of it was palpable, echoing in my own heart.

"You… you're here," she whispered to the empty air, her voice thick with emotion. Her eyes shimmered with unshed tears. Then, a silent question formed in her mind, one I felt directly through Cosmic Empathy: "Who are you, my friend?"

I received it. The question, unspoken, profound. I couldn't answer it directly. Not yet. But I sent back a feeling, a subtle surge of comforting presence, of unwavering loyalty. A promise.

Alex Danvers, inside the apartment, emerged from her room, drawn by the quietness of Kara's reaction. She saw Kara standing there, eyes distant, a serene smile on her face. "Kara? Is everything alright?"

Kara turned, her smile soft, her eyes shining with an internal light Alex couldn't comprehend. "Yes, Alex. Everything is… understood." She didn't elaborate. She didn't need to.

Alex, ever the pragmatist, simply gave Kara a concerned look, then shrugged, making a mental note to check for anomalous energy readings later. She couldn't see the connection. She couldn't feel the empathy. But Kara could.

"Soon, Kara," I thought, my gaze sweeping over National City. "Soon, all your questions will be answered. But for now, let the mystery deepen. Let the trust grow. Because the future… the future holds much more than just questions. It holds revelations." The arc closed on a note of intimate connection, a powerful bond forged in silence and impossible interventions, setting the stage for the true unveiling of the Glitch's purpose.
