The next morning, sunlight filtered through the wide glass panes of the mansion Kaelthar had conjured. The building sat in perfect harmony with the land he'd reshaped, its presence woven so seamlessly into the world that no one would ever question when or how it had been built. For anyone outside, it had always been here—an elegant estate belonging to a nobleman with a long, traceable lineage Kaelthar himself had crafted.
Inside, the atmosphere was calm. The rich scent of polished wood and the faint aroma of tea lingered in the air.
Kaelthar sat at the edge of his bed, already awake. His mind was clear, though he had hardly slept. Even after erasing that quivering, shrouded being and repairing the timestream, the faint echo of the disturbance lingered at the back of his thoughts. Something—or someone—had dared to toy with the threads of fate, and though he had dismissed it last night, Kaelthar knew this wouldn't be the last time.
But for now, he set those thoughts aside. Today was about Rias.
She had left before dawn, insisting she had matters to prepare with her family in the Underworld. It wasn't like her to slip away without more words, but Kaelthar understood. Meeting her parents, especially under the weight of her family's expectations, was no small matter. She needed time to face them first.
That left him with Akeno and Koneko.
The sound of soft footsteps drew his attention. Akeno entered the room without knocking, carrying a tray with tea. Her smile was gentle, though her eyes sparkled with a teasing glint.
"You're up early, Kaelthar," she said smoothly. "Did you sleep at all, or were you watching the stars again?"
Kaelthar smirked faintly. "Old habits. Sleep feels… secondary."
She set the tray down, kneeling gracefully beside him. "You'll need your strength today. Rias's parents are not easily impressed." Her gaze slid over him deliberately, lingering on his bare chest before flicking back up with a sly grin. "Though I can think of a few ways to help you… relax before then."
Kaelthar gave her a sharp look, though there was no real anger in it. "Didn't we already discuss this last night?"
Akeno tilted her head, feigning innocence. "Mmm, we did. But discussing and doing are different things. Besides…" She leaned closer, her lips brushing near his ear, her voice dropping to a whisper. "…once isn't nearly enough."
Kaelthar exhaled slowly, half amused and half exasperated. "You're insatiable."
Her soft laugh was warm and shameless. "And you're to blame for that."
Before she could press further, Koneko's voice drifted in from the doorway. "…Again?"
Both turned. Koneko stood there, her expression as blank as always, though the faintest twitch of her brow betrayed her thoughts. She padded into the room, arms crossed, and looked from Akeno to Kaelthar with calm disapproval.
"You two make too much noise at night," she said flatly. "And now, in the morning too. It's tiring."
Akeno chuckled, hiding her smile behind her hand. "Oh, Koneko-chan, you're always so direct."
Kaelthar shook his head, rising to his feet. "Enough of this. I need to decide what I'll wear when I meet Rias's parents. That's the real priority."
He crossed to the wardrobe—a creation of his power as much as the mansion itself. Inside hung fine garments suited for the Underworld's nobility: long coats woven with enchantments, elegant suits traced with subtle designs of authority, and robes that carried the weight of power.
Akeno trailed after him, her hand brushing across the fabrics before selecting a deep crimson coat trimmed with black and silver. She held it against his frame, her eyes narrowing in appraisal.
"This one," she said with certainty. "It carries presence, but doesn't scream arrogance. Strong, regal… exactly what you are."
Kaelthar studied it for a moment, then gave a small nod. "Not bad."
Her smirk widened as she stepped closer, her voice low. "And it suits you in other ways. I'd almost say it makes you irresistible."
Kaelthar glanced at her sideways. "You'd say that no matter what I wore."
"Perhaps," she admitted, her tone light and teasing. "But that doesn't make it less true."
From the couch, Koneko muttered under her breath, "…Rias will kill you if you keep this up, Akeno."
Akeno only giggled in response, clearly enjoying the younger girl's bluntness.
Kaelthar, however, let his hand rest on the coat for a moment before he spoke. His tone was calm, but his words carried weight. "Today isn't just about looking the part. Rias's parents… her family… they will test me. They'll measure what I am and decide if I'm worthy of standing by her side. And I intend to make it clear—I am."
The air in the room grew heavier. Even Akeno, ever playful, let her expression soften as she studied him. There was no doubt, no hesitation in his voice. Only certainty.
Koneko's golden eyes lingered on him, her usual calm gaze betraying the faintest spark of respect. "…You sound confident."
Kaelthar looked out the window, sunlight cutting across his features. "Confidence isn't the word. It's just reality. If I cannot stand before her parents with strength and resolve, then I don't deserve her trust."
Akeno tilted her head, her smile returning—though gentler this time, less teasing and more genuine. "Then we'll make sure you look the part, Kaelthar. When Rias sees you at her side, she'll know she made the right choice."
Kaelthar remained quiet, but a faint smile tugged at his lips. For all her teasing, Akeno's loyalty was unwavering. And Koneko's steady presence reminded him that despite the chaos of timelines and shadows, there was still this—this simple, grounding bond they all shared.
For now, that was enough.
But even as he turned back to the wardrobe, part of his mind drifted once more to the memory of last night—the shadowed being, the trembling of fate, and the truth he had glimpsed beyond the veil.
Today, he would play his role in Rias's world. But he knew the real battles were only just beginning.
