"It's against regulations to share evidence with a suspect," Bianca said, that brief moment of softness vanishing. "Especially a murder suspect."

I gripped the cold metal bars. "You know I didn't kill him."

Bianca's eyes held mine for a long second. Then she leaned in slightly, her voice dropping. "I don't know anything yet. But I do know one thing—Gideon Thorne was alive when I arrived at another crime scene earlier today. Now he's dead, and you're the only one found with him."

With that, she turned and walked away, her white coat swishing behind her.

I watched her go, trying to read something—anything—in her rigid posture. Despite her hostility, I sensed she wasn't completely convinced of my guilt.

Once alone in my cell, I sat on the thin mattress and closed my eyes. My thoughts raced despite my exhaustion. Uncle Gideon had been about to tell me something crucial—something worth killing him for.
