The question hung heavy in the air as we all waited for Vera's answer.
"O goddess!" Sabrina suddenly exclaimed, reaching for the helm of her dress to wipe the blood. "She's bleeding."
A small commotion erupted as everyone crowded around Vera. My father tore strips from the sheets, his hands shaking as he passed them to Xavier, who bandaged her arm with deft precision.
My fists clenched at my sides. From where I stood, the wound didn't look deep at all, yet the crucial moment—where I might have dragged a confession out of her—was gone.
She's doing it on purpose, Moon hissed and I agreed. It was too obvious. What were they hiding?
Someone shoved past me and I quickly stepped aside as Sharon burst into the room with a shrill cry of, "Mistress!"
I waited while they fussed over Vera. At last, they sat her on the bed, the triplets forming a protective half-circle around her.
"What happened?" Rolan asked.
