VERA
My mother smiled at Sharon and said sweetly, "Run along now, I will take it up from here."
Sharon cast one last worried glance at me before leaving the room. The instant she did, my mother got up from the bed in which she had been taking a nap seconds before I had barged in.
She rounded on me and the sweet polite mask she wore in front of everyone else slipped. Her eyes flashed, her lips turned down into a scowl.
"Vera Anne Huntley!" my mother hissed angrily. "What in the heaven's name is going on with you now? How dare you loose your composure like this? Have you forgotten that are the soon-to-be Luna of Silver Creek?"
Pressing a hand against her brow, she shook her head. "I wonder how many maids and guards saw you scurrying in here like a frightened rabbit!"
I had known my mother would react like this. Still I didn't have a choice but to run to her because I was terrified.
