Just then, a guard shouted that the fire had been doused.
"Thank the goddess," Luna Megan breathed, shutting her eyes in relief.
Sabrina, Sharon, and the Beta's wife rushed toward the scene, and we all followed. The door to the room had been bashed in, thick smoke pouring out in suffocating waves. From inside came the sound of someone coughing.
Xerxes's eyes widened. "That's Vera in there," he told Xavier.
Without hesitation, he shoved the guards aside, disappearing into the smoke. Seconds later, he emerged, supporting someone against his side.
As the smoke thinned, I saw it was indeed Vera. Her evening dress was torn and singed, her hair loose and wild, her face streaked with soot. My brows furrowed in confusion. What had Vera been doing in there?
"Vera!" Sabrina cried, rushing forward, only to stop short with a startled gasp.
