"Where have you been?" Madam Maria, the head maid, asked. "I've been in here twice already to look for you."
"I'm sorry," I said. "I was out..."
I trailed off, staring at the pretty green dress with gold embroidery in her arms.
"Here," she said, holding it out to me. "You will be serving tea at dinner tonight, and you are to wear this."
"Serving tea? Me?"
"The Pack's guests will be there," Madam Maria said, and that explained a lot.
It was customary for the soon-to-be Luna to practice playing the role of a perfect hostess. Apparently, Alpha Kai was carrying on with the tradition because of the guests.
An hour before dinner, I was in the kitchen brewing tea while the other maids bustled about, putting the finishing touches on the food. Then, smoothing down my dress, I carried the tea tray to the dining room.
The Alpha, Luna, guests, and my mates were there, and so were Vera and her mother. My father had been away on Pack business for days, and I didn't miss him.
